The wine of the lips has decreed
the breaking of the fast for those who fast,
and the fasting of those who break their fast.
The turning of time has decreed
the separation of lovers,
and the doom of those separated.
And many a feared youth,
majestic in the hearts of men,
is humbled by youth
before a wild, untamed gazelle,
sweet-voiced, whose nectar
is sweeter than the finest wine;
with a languid glance
that terrifies those who are secure,
and captivates the ascetics.
Oh, may my father ransom the handsome one,
marvelous in his attributes,
for whom crimson blood has dyed
his gilded cheeks;
by which the reckless man easily drinks
brimming cups
that awaken the spirit to joy
and console the deeply enamored,
despite the envious ones.
So the cups of strong wine
in the palms of beautiful maidens,
the blushing of the face,
and the echoing of the lute strings,
and a cupbearer like the Pleiades
comfort every suffering captive,
and call to delight,
while the reproach of the blamers
is but the ignorance of the ignorant.
