يَقولٌ الْمُعَنَّى لِلذَّكِيِّ الْمُحَقِّقِ
مَحَلُّ اخْتِيَارِي بَخْتِيَارٌ بِمَشْرِقِ
The tormented lover says to the astute, discerning mind:
"My chosen one is Bakhtiyar in the East;
فَلَوْ كَانَ لِي بَخْتٌ وَذَا نِصْفُهُ رَنَا
إِلَيَّ بِعَيْنِ الْعَاشِقِ الْمُتَمَلِّقِ
If I possessed fortune (Bakht)—which is half of his name—he would have gazed
Upon me with the tender eyes of a fawning lover.
وَلَوْ كَانَ لِي رَأْيٌ كَعَكْسِ الذِي بَقِي
هُدِيتُ فَلَمْ أُبْصِرْ جَمَالاً لِأَخْرَقِ
And if I possessed judgment (Ra'y)—the exact reverse of what remains (Yar)—
I would have been guided, and seen no beauty in a fool."
