The evening caressed the glance of a young man
The evening at the Cape's headland delighted the eye of a youth,
Who did not turn his passionate glance from his heart
Whose gaze could not deflect the peak of passion from his heart.
Our companionship and joy in him made us hope
Intimacy and gladness were our companions there, when
That our wishes would be fulfilled by his glance
Our desired one appeared before us, saddling his noble steed.
The sea showed its innermost being in its clarity
The sea, in its pristine clarity, revealed its hidden depths,
The tower revealed what was behind it in its height
And the tower, in its lofty height, unveiled what lay beyond.
The sun complained from the heights of Andalusia
The towering peaks of the mountains of Andalusia loomed,
Of its abuse by the Christians while in fervor
Their summits complaining of the Christians, steeped in anguish.
Septa called out
And Ceuta appeared from it, crying out:
O people of the religion of guidance, is there any kindness in you
'O people of the religion of guidance, have you any sympathy?
Is there any zeal to purify me from the filth of polytheism
Is there any righteous zeal demanding my purification from the filth of
By the absolute religion of unadulterated faith?
Polytheism, through the absolute truth of the pure faith?'
There I recite while hopes are near
There I shall recite, while hopes draw near,
And disbelief has covered those of formidable power
And trembling has seized the mighty among the disbelievers:
Praise be to Allah, people of praise, who inspires them
'Praise be to God, the Lord of praise and its inspirer,
Degrading the Christians and aiding those He guides in kindness
Who humbles the Christians and bestows His grace upon those He guides.'
