The embers of farewell, and God is all I need,
The embers of farewell—and Allah is sufficient for me—
Have seared my liver and consumed my heart.
Have blistered my liver and destroyed my reason.
I cried to my God and Lord complaining,
I spoke out in complaint: O my God and my Lord,
“The day we parted burned my heart away.”
Truly, the day of separation has burned my heart,
And separation's fire has roasted me.
And parting has seared me with fire, a deep branding.
My loved ones, you remain exalted still
O my beloveds, they have never ceased to rise,
With every sigh since that sad dawn we parted.
My agonizing sighs, since the morning of farewell.
How true is longing after closeness ends!
So by the sacred right of reunion after being torn apart,
If God should will we reunite someday,
If Allah should ever decree a gathering between us,
I'll never speak of parting while I live.
I shall never mention separation for as long as I live.
