By your life, and by the sky and He who built it
By your life, by the heavens, and by Him who built them,
And by the lights of the gazelle in its morning
And by the rays of the morning sun in its bright forenoon,
You are most certainly the eminent, eminent ruler of Fez
You are indeed the rightful chieftain, the chieftain of Fez,
And Fez is the paradise of the world, its beauty
And Fez is the paradise of this world, its ultimate peak!
Remove, O eye, the splendor of its ornaments
Remove, O essence of its joy, the mote from its eye,
And take down, O longing, its lofty minarets
And guard, O longing of the Maghreb, its radiant splendor.
Its lofty minarets, you are for Allah, you
Its splendor is none other than you—how truly wondrous you are!—
Are the planets of good fortune whose darkness has been erased
Stars of good fortune that have utterly dispelled its darkness.
Not like the Kabaids, makers of its Creator's temptation
And among its youth, there is none like the humble servant of his Creator,
Descendants of its notables and father of its ascension
The descendant of its noble essences and the father of its high glories.
Its ascension through which it reached its purpose
Glories through which it has reached its absolute zenith,
And was before that incomparable
Even though, long before that, it was entirely without equal.
Whenever the masters beget its father
When noble lords give birth to the father of its greatness,
Its glory is perfected and its renown exalted
Its glory attains perfection, and its eminence soars ever higher.
To him belong Mribau and Saffaya
To him belongs the chieftain's quarter of my love, and the choicest spoils,
And his rule and Annachita along with them
Along with absolute command, the early captures, and all else besides.
With the sign that to him hastened
Proved by the fact that they rushed in haste toward him—
Types of praises when he called them
All manner of praiseworthy virtues, the very moment he summoned them.
He called them while they had tied up their love
He called to them while they sat firmly bound in their resting posture,
So they unleashed it and it flew away with their passion
Yet they untied their knots, and their passion made them take flight,
Their passion to see him most adorned
Their deepest desire being to behold him or the very dust of his earth,
So it does not cease gushing his fragrance
Thus he never ceases to deeply inhale the sweet fragrance of its soil.
