نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ إِنْ غَابَ عَنَّا السَّاقِي

بَلَغَتْ نَفْسُ أُنْسِنَا لِلتَّرِاقِي

We are a people, if the cupbearer is absent from us

We are a people who, if the cupbearer is absent from us,

Our souls yearn for drinking

the soul of our joy reaches the collarbones,

وَتَلَظَّتْ أَنْفَاسُنَا وَقَسَتْ

أَنْفُسُنَا مِنْ فِرَاقِ خَمْرِ التَّلاَقِي

And our breaths become harsh and our souls hardened

and our breaths burn, and our souls grow hard

From being separated from the wine of communion

from the separation of the wine of meeting.

فَأَدِرْهَا يَا ابْنَ الْكِرَامِ أَبَا يَعْ

زَى عَلَى سِرِّنَا بِكَأْسٍ دِهَاقِ

So pass it around, O son of nobles, Abu Ya'za

So pass it around, O son of the noble ones, Abu Ya'-

Triumph over our secret with a large cup

-za, to our secret soul in an overflowing cup,

وَاسْقِنَا خَمْرَةً نَظَلُّ بِهَا نَجْ

نِي جَنَى الْمَلَكُوتِ فَوْقَ الطِّبَاقِ

And quench us with a wine by which we can enjoy

and pour for us a wine by which we remain ga-

The gardens of paradise above the layers

-thering the fruits of the heavenly realm above the spheres,

وَنَحُوزُ بِهَا الْمَدَى حِينَ لاَ يَحْ

وِي الْمَدَى مِنْ فَتىً سِوَى السُّبَّاقِ

And by which we obtain glory when glory

and by which we attain the farthest reach, when it is not at-

Contains no one but the outstripping youth

-tained by any youth except the foremost racers.

وَأَثِبْ ذِي الْخُطَى التِي أَوْصَلَتْنَا

لِحِمَاكَ الْمَعْلُولِ بِالإِشْرَاقِ

And steady the steps which brought us

And reward these footsteps that have brought us

To your protected sanctuary illuminated with dawn

to your sanctuary, refreshed with illumination,

بِالذِي تَقْتَضِيهِ مِنْكَ الْمَزَايَا

وَالسَّجَايَا الْكَرِيمَةُ الأَعْرَاقِ

By what your virtues require of you

with what is necessitated from you by virtues

And your generous noble dispositions

and noble characteristics of glorious descent,

وَمُنىً قَدْ أَطَرْنَ نُحْوَكَ قَلْباً

مُدْرَجاً فِي لَفَائِفِ الأَشْوَاقِ

And wishes we have set towards you, a heart

and hopes that have made a heart fly toward you,

Enveloped in the wrappings of passions

enveloped in the folds of yearnings.

إِنَّهَا وَعُلاَكَ قَدْ أَوْرَدَتْهُ

مَنْهَلَ الْفَضْلِ وَهْوَ عَذْبُ الْمَذَاقِ

It and your elevation have brought it

Indeed, by your eminence, they have brought it

To the spring of virtue, which is sweet to taste

to the watering-place of grace, which is sweet to the taste,

وَأَرَتْهُ مِنَ الْمَكَارِمِ رَوْضاً

مُثْمِراً بِمَكَارِمِ الأَخْلاَقِ

And shown it from generosity a garden

and showed it a garden of noble deeds,

Bearing the fruits of noble morals

fruitful with the nobilities of character.

هَبْ لَهْ أَجْزَلَ الْمَوَاهِبِ حَتَّى

لاَ يَخَافُ الْمَرْهُوبَ مِنْ إِمْلاَقِ

Bestow upon it the most abundant gifts so that

Grant it the most abundant of gifts, so that

It fears no terrifying confrontation

it will not fear the dread of destitution,

وَأَنِلْهُ مِنَ الذَّخَائِرِ مَالاً

يَخْتَشِي فِيهِ غِيلَةَ السُّرَّاقِ

And grant it from treasures a wealth

and bestow upon it from the treasures a wealth

It fears no cheating of thieves

wherein one fears the treachery of thieves.

فَالذِي عِنْدَكُمْ مِنَ الْفَضْلِ لاَ يَنْ

فِدُ وَالْمَرْءُ ذُو هَوىً تَوَّاقِ

For the nobility that is with you does not run out

For the grace that is with you does not ex-

And one with passion is desirous

-haust, and the man is one of yearning desire.

وَأَبُوكُمْ أَبُو شُعَيْبٍشَفِيعِي

لِعُلاَكُمْ مَعَ الصَّفِيِّ الْعِرَاقِي

And your father, Abu Shu'ayb, is my intercessor

And your father Abu Shu'ayb is my intercessor

For your elevation, with the Iraqi holy man

to your eminence, along with the pure Iraqi,

ذَلِكَ الِقُطْبِ سَيِّدِي عَابِدِ الْقَا

دِرِحِبِّكُمْ فِي رِضَى الْخَلَّاقْ

That pole, my master, servant of the Capable

that Pole, my master 'Abid al-Qa-

Lover of you in the pleasure of the Creator

-dir, your beloved in the pleasure of the Creator.

يَا لَهُ صَاحِباً وَيَا لَهُ مَصْحُو

باً وَيَا لَكُمْ مَلْجَأً لِلرِّفَاقِ

O what a companion he has, and what a confidant!

Oh, what a companion he is, and what a compan-

And what a refuge for friends you have!

-ioned one, and what a refuge you are for the comrades!

صُحْبَةٌ طَهَّرَ الإِلَهُ ثَرَاهَا

مِنْ خَبَالٍ وَدُلْسَةٍ وَشِقَاقِ

A companionship whose terrain God has purified

A companionship whose soil God has purified

Of wickedness, deception and conflict

from corruption, deceit, and discord.

صُحْبَةٌ نَزَّهَ الإِلَهُ سَنَاهَا

عَنْ دُجَى كُلِّ صَاحَبٍ مَذَّاقِ

A companionship whose image God has sanctified

A companionship whose radiance God has kept flawless

From the gloom of every despised companion

from the darkness of any inconstant companion.

صُحْبَةٌ بَنَتْ قُرْبَةً لَحَظَتْهَا

نَفَحَاتُ الإِلَهِ بِالأَحْدَاقِ

A companionship which built intimacy gazed upon

A companionship that built a closeness, observed

By the breaths of God with glances

by the divine breezes with watchful eyes.

كَثَّرَ اللهُ فَضْلَكُمْ وَسَقَانَا

بِيَدَيْكُمْ كَأْسَ الْمَعَانِي الرِّقَاقِ

God has multiplied your nobility and quenched us

May God multiply your grace and pour for us

By your hands with a cup of subtle meanings

by your hands the cup of delicate meanings.

وَأَدَامَ أَزْكَى الصَّلاَةِ عَلَى الْمُخْ

تَارِ طَهَ كَالْمِسْكِ فِي الأَحْقَاقِ

And made last the purest prayer upon the Chosen One

And may He perpetuate the purest blessings upon the Cho-

Ta Ha, like musk in valuations

-sen One, Taha, like musk in its caskets,

وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ طُ

رًّا وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ بِحُسْنِ اتِّفَاقِ

And upon his family and companions

and upon his family and his companions, a-

Generously and their followers with excellent harmony.

-ll of them, and their followers in perfect harmony.
