قد وَصَلَتْ قارُورتي
وحاجتي ما وَصَلَتْ
My flask has indeed arrived,
but my need has not been met.
تسيلُ مستعبرَةً
بأَيِّ ذنبٍ قتِلَتْ
She leaks, shedding tears:
“For what sin was she slain?”
فأصبحَتْ قد غُيِّرَتْ
عن حالها وبُدِّلَتْ
And so she ended up altered,
transformed from her former state—
مكسورةً منقوصةً
ليست كأخرى كَمَلتْ
broken and diminished,
unlike another that was whole.
كَسُورةٍ قد غُيِّرت
عمّا عليه نزلَتْ
Like a sura that has been altered
from the form in which it was revealed.
يا حسنها إن نُصِرَتْ
وقبحَها إنْ خُذِلَتْ
How lovely she is, if upheld;
and how ugly, if forsaken!
