  1. أبلغْ أباكَ إذا هلكتَ وقلْ لهُ

    يا مُقْصِيَ القوم الكرامِ إذا دنَوا

    Tell your father when you perish, and say to him,

    "O you who spurns the generous people when they come near,

  2. للّهِ درّك لو قصرتَ حجابةً

    جُعلتْ عليك على العيال لما زنَوا

    May God reward you even if you fell short in your protection,

    You would have been blamed for what your family did.

  3. بلْ أيها الرجلُ المفوّه في الوَرى

    والقامعُ المتشدقينَ إذا اكتنَوا

    Rather, O eloquent man among all people

    And subduer of the arrogant when they scheme,

  4. أقسمتُ لو تَرمي العيالَ بأَسهمٍ

    ترمي بهنَّ الناس كَفُّوا أو ونَوا

    I swear if you had shot your family with their arrows,

    You would have shot the people - stop or insist!

  5. بل هُمْ أحقُّ بأن تقومَ بشكرهم

    إذ صرّحوا لك بالعِهار وما كَنَوا

    Rather they deserve that you thank them

    When they openly told you about the shame and didn't hide it.

  6. قد نزّهوكَ عن الخداعِ ونكَّبوا

    سُبل النفاقِ وإن جَنَوا لك ما جَنَوا

    They cleared you of deception and turned away

    From the paths of hypocrisy even though they did what they did.

  7. ولما عَنَوْا مكروهَ نفسِكَ عندها

    لكنهم محبوبَ أنفسِهم عنَوا

    And when they disliked the hated thing for your soul,

    They disliked their own beloved souls.

  8. فاعذرْ عيالَ أبيكَ في أفعالِهِم

    فلطالَ ما حدبوا عليك وما حَنَوا

    So excuse your father's family for their deeds,

    For so long they were loyal to you and affectionate.

  9. أثْني عليهم بالجميل وإن بَنَوا

    لك من قُرونِك أو كشوخِكَ ما بنَوا

    Praise them for their good deeds even if

    They built from your horns and old age what they built.

  10. لَوجدتَهم مرضى القلوبِ إذا خَلوا

    ورأيتَهم مرضَى العيون إذا رنَوا

    You would find them with hearts sick when alone

    And see them with eyes sick when they cry.

  11. لا يمنعون الماءَ عند وروده

    غُلل السُقاةِ ولا السّناة إذا سنَوا

    They do not refuse water when it comes

    By the cups of the water bearers or the vessels when they fetch.

  12. سَقياً لهم وإن اجتويتَ فعالَهم

    لقد اجتَبوا لك ما يقُوتك واقتنَوا

    Giving drink even if you disliked their actions,

    They chose for you what sustains you and bought it."

  13. فافخر بعيشك يا عيال عيالِه

    وبهم فكم بدأوا الجميلَ وكم ثَنَوا

    So boast, O family of his family,

    With them - how much good they began and how much they repeated!
