أبا حسن إنني ناصحٌ

وقلَّ لك النصحُ أن تُرْفدَهْ

O Abu Hasan, I am an advisor

And advice for you is rarely found

أما تتطيَّرُ من أن تكُو

ن تُقْصِي امرءاً واسمه مَسعدَهْ

Are you not wary that you

Turn away a man named Masa'dah

بلى إن في ذاك مُطَّيَّراً

فقرِّبْهُ تَبْعُدْ به المنْكدَهْ

Yes indeed, in that there is wariness

So bring him close, drive away discontent

أفي خَزَريٍّ رفضتَ امرءاً

يَقِلُّ له أن لو استعْبَدَهْ

Did you spurn a man from Khazari

Who rarely says that even if enslaved

فيا ليت شعري إذا غاب عنْ

ك من ذا كفى بَعْدَه مشهدَهْ

Oh how I wish I knew, if he is absent

Who after him sufficed you when seen

أعيذك من أن يَرى حاسدٌ

صنائعك الغُرَّ مستفسَدَهْ

I seek refuge for you from an envier’s eye

Beholding your fine deeds gone rotten

وما قلتُ قَولي لشكري يداً

يدَاها ولا مستميحاً يَدَهْ

And I spoke not my words out of thanks

For his hands or seeking favor from his hands
