1. قل لهاجيكَ مُطنباً في الهجاءِ

    لا تَبِعْ راحةً بطولِ عناءِ

    Tell the one excessively given to satire

    Do not seek comfort through prolonged toil

  2. سَمِّني لا تزد فأنت إذا ما

    قلتَ أفعى أنبأتَ عن رَقْشاءِ

    Name me, do not exaggerate, for if

    You say "viper" you tell of a lizard

  3. قَسَماً إنَّ في الهجاء لَسِتْراً

    وغطاءً للسوءة السَّوآءِ

    I swear, satire is indeed a veil

    And a cover for evil character

  4. لو هجا الأنبياءُ كلباً لقال الـ

    ـناسُ هذا تكذُّب الشعراءِ

    If the prophets had satirized a dog, people would say

    "This is the poets' lies"
