صبراً أبا الصقر فكم طائر

خرَّ صريعاً بعد تحليقِ

Have patience, father of hawk, for how many a bird

Has fallen dead after flying high

زُوِّجتَ نُعمى لم تكن كفأها

فصانها الله بتطليق

You were married to Nu'aima who was not your equal

So God protected her with divorce

وكل نعمى غير مشكورة

رهن زوال بعد تمحيق

And every blessing that is unappreciated

Is prone to disappearance after being enjoyed

لا قدست نعمى تسربلتها

كم حجة فيها لزنديق

No blessing has been sanctified that drapes itself

How many arguments against that for the skeptic!

صبراً لهاج ذاد عنك الكرى

وشاب دنياك بترنيق

Have patience for the passionate defender of you

And the youth who made your life lively with his singing

أرَّقه مدحُك لا مجدياً

فاقتصّ تأريقاً بتأريق

My praise keeps him awake futilely

So take revenge by keeping him awake in turn
