1. قينةٌ ملعونة من أجلها

    رفَضَ اللهوَ معاً من رفضَهْ

    A cursed talent for which

    He shunned play altogether when he shunned it

  2. تضغطُ الصوت الذي تشدو به

    غُصّةٌ في حلقها معترضهْ

    It suppresses the voice with which it sings

    A lump in its throat blocking it

  3. فإذا غنَّتْ بدا في جِيدها

    كلُّ عرقٍ مثلَ بيت الأَرَضَهْ

    So when it sings there appeared on its cheek

    Every blood vessel like the burrows of jerboas

  4. يتجافى عُودها عن سخلةٍ

    أبدا في بطنها مُرتكضَهْ

    Its lute eschews any ungainliness

    Galloping perpetually in its interior

  5. وتُحيل الظاءَ ضاداً فإذا

    هي قالت عِظةً قالت عِضَهْ

    And it transforms the “th” sound into “dh” so when

    It said a sermon it said a censure
