1. Tell the young lord of Bishr’s house—nay, him on whom their hopes rest—

    my message: there is no shame in messages such as this.

  2. Is this permissible, Abu al-Abbas—or is it seemly—

    when you are noble, keen of heart, and deeply discerning?

  3. A wrong in which you persist: no sign is seen in you

    of drawing back from it, though the wronged man keeps silent.

  4. What prodigious quarry lies caught in your courtyard,

    like bullion ingots, measured in full and lesser handspans!

  5. Each day, morning after morning, your allotted stipends come to you

    from it, while your brothers get nothing whatsoever.

  6. You are healthy, yet the sick have the better claim to it;

    so be fair—for those who uphold justice are righteous.

  7. Or, failing that, even a dirham is enough to preserve a man’s self-respect;

    it frees him from asking you and fulfills pressing needs and desires.

  8. Then speak to us when we come about our need;

    for we shall count that as payment in full, and freely choose it.

  9. Do not be stingy toward us, making us exact a penalty from you,

    lest stinginess and injury be joined together in you.

  10. I say what I have to say—and I have warned you of my anger—

    O lords of men: a warning absolves the warner.

  11. I have singled out Abu Isa for my reproach,

    since neither an alert nor a reminder came from him.

  12. Among you I have presumed upon the goodwill of your age’s noblemen,

    and noblemen do not take such trusting familiarity amiss.

  13. So let that familiarity not be answered with denial; for you

    are a people who acknowledge the dues of glory.
