ولما رأيتُ القيلَ ينبو شنيعُه

عن السمع لم أعدم لطافَ المحايلِ

When I saw slander rear its ugly head

Detestable to the ear, I did not lack subtlety's grace.

فصدَّرْتُ أعجازَ الهجاءِ مناسباً

تحُطُّ الوعولَ من رؤوس المعاقل

So I prefaced invective with apt preamble

That would bring down the howls from fortress crest,

ليخرقْنَ أسداد المسامِع قبْله

فينْغلَّ في أزرار تلك الغلائل

To pierce plugged ears beforehand,

And worm into the fastenings of those veils.
