أغرُّ مُخيلات الأماني لموعُها

وأشقى نفوس الشائميها طموعُها

The most delightful imaginations of hopes with their flashes,

And the most wretched souls with blaming them and their ambitions.

دعتنا إلى حمد الرجال وذمهم

هموعُ سحابات لهم ودموعها

They called us to praise men or dispraise them,

Tears of clouds for them and their weeping.

وللدهر فينا قسمة عجرفية

على السخط والمرضاة منا وقوعها

And time treats us arrogantly with its division,

Between anger and pleasure from us is their happening.

فهيماءُ في ضحل السارب كُرُوعُها

وهيماء في بحر الشراب كروعها

So it is perplexed in the shallow pond like its tadpoles,

And it is perplexed in the deep sea like its shoals of fish.

وسافلة يزري عليها سفولُها

ويافعة يزري عليها يفوعها

And despicable people whom their despicableness harms,

And youths whom their youthfulness harms.

وفي هذه الدنيا عصائبُ لم تزل

لخطة ضيم لا لحقٍّ خنوعها

And in this world there are parties that have not ceased

To the injustice of oppression, not to the truth of its submission.

فلا في الهَنات المُحفظات إباؤها

ولا في الحقوق الواجبات بخوعها

So neither the protected coquettes refuse it,

Nor the obligatory rights amongst them lack it.

فلا يأمنوا وليحذروا غبَّ أمرهم

فبغي الجدود العاليات صروعها

So they are not safe, and let them beware of the unknown result of their matter,

For the adversity of lofty tidings is fraught with tribulation.

ومن أمنِ نفس أن تخاف ولم يكن

لتأمن من مكروهة لا تروعها

And whoever feels secure that fear would depart from him

While no security from an abhorred thing that does not alarm him exists,

سينفر من أمن العواقب آمنٌ

بَلا مِن مُناه ما جناه خدوعها

Will flee from the security of consequences—feeling safe—

But not from what his refuge brought him of deception.

وللناس أفعال يجازى مدادُها

وللدهر أحوال يكايل صُوعها

And people have deeds for which their extension is rewarded,

And time has states for which its cups are measured.

لعلَّ ذرى تهوي وعل أسافلاً

ستعلو وخفَّاض المباني رَفوعها

Perhaps descendants will be degraded and the lowly

Will be exalted, and the bowing structures raised.

فكم من جدود ذل منها عزيزها

وكم من جدود عز منها ضَروعها

So how many glories did baseness hit its noble ones,

And how many glories did honor hit and made them broken.

ألا أبلغا عني العلاء بن صاعدٍ

رسالة ذي نفسٍ قليلٍ هلوعها

Will you deliver on my behalf to the eminent Ala’ bin Sa’eed,

A message from a soul of little forbearance so its weeping is pulled together.

فإن تحتجز فالله جمٌّ عطاؤه

وإن تحتجب فالشمس جم طلوعها

If you withhold, then God’s bounty is perfect,

And if you conceal, then the sun’s emergence is perfect.

أبت نفسك المعروف حتى تبتلت

إلى اليأس نفس واطمأن مروعها

Your soul refused benevolence until it was tried

To despair—a soul settled and alarmed.

ولكنكم لا تبطنون محبة

لنخلتكم ما سحَّ أرضاً صقوعها

But you do not harbor inside love

For your palm trees, nor poured earth with watering.

فقد عزفت عن كل ما كنت أبتغي

لديك فأمسى كبرياءً خضوعها

So its shadows did not cool down for the ignorant,

Nor did its springs freshen for the ones tasting it.

سأظلف من نفس بذلت سجودها

وكان حقيقاً أن يصان ركوعها

The palm trees refused to ripen their fruits,

And their roots and branches are wicked.

هي النفس أغنتها عن الدهر كله

قناعتها إذ لم يفتها قنوعها

You married rhymes without dowry while you

Are not their peers, so the censured ones blame it.

عفاء على الدنيا إذا مستحقها

بغاها ومن تبغى لديه منوعها

Take your time, do not rush and take it slowly,

It will be dearly sold to people other than you in exchange.

جزتكم جوازي الشر يا آل مخلد

وأقوت من النعمى عليكم ربوعها

My virginal rhymes will be dowried if I court with them,

The shy doers of fine deeds with splendor and spread goods.

ولا انفرجت عنكم من الكره خطةٌ

ولا الْتَأَمَت إلا عليكم صدوعها

And if I am vexed with a land to the extent

That I answer the regions of countries with their milestones.

ولا صمدت إلا إليكم ملمة

ولا كان فيكم يوم ذاك دفوعها

And rhymes are not rhymes if their

Nonsense from truth and nonsense is safeguarded.

ليهنيكُمُ أن ليس يوجد منكمُ

لبوس ثياب المجد لكن خلوعها

And they are not like snakes in being protected,

When the boldness towards you is urged and wounding made long.

وأن ركايا الماء فيكم جَرورها

إذا كان في القوم الكرام نَزوعها

It refused that its glory be diminished through submission,

The honor in itself refused to be pursued through humility.

نظرنا فأجدى من عطاياكم المنى

وأندى على الأكباد منهن جوعها

And whoever did not find sufficient pasture in the favor of his palms,

Then in his honor, not in other than it, is her gazing place.

وجدناكم أرضاً كثيراً بذورها

رواءً سواقيها قليلاً رُيوعها

Deliver my regards, those are the casks pulled

To other than you, their straps opened and inclining.

فلا بوركت عين تسيح لسقيها

كما لم تبارك في الزروع زروعها

Maiden rhymes like maiden girls he drives

To youthfulness while their candles are lit.

جهدناكم مرياً فقال ذوو النهى

لقد أشبهت أظلاف شاة ضروعها

We clothed you in it while we were quite unaware,

With praise that did not congratulate the profit of its sale.

ألا لا سقى الله الحيا شجراتكم

إذا ما سماء الله صاب هموعها

And how many hopes it drew from us to you,

Yet distanced from you, not towards you, their inclination.

فما بردت للاغبين ظلالها

ولا عذبت للسائغين نبوعها

Indeed I went astray, and the travelers spent the night, and they woke up

Dragging their luggage towards you and emigrating.

أبت شجرات أن تطيب ثمارها

وقد خبثت أعراقها وفروعها

God decreed that the wailing of her bereavement does not dissolve

From the hand of time when it clung to you with its wailing.

نكحتم بلا مهر قوافيَ لستمُ

بأكفائها فاللائعات تلوعها

You wore favors so your slide dragged

At its ends and its middles from it are blackened.

رويدكم لا تعجلوا ورُوَيدَها

ستغلو لدى قوم سواكم بضوعها

And its clothes did not exude perfume when they raised you,

Nor beautify in the sight of anyone its armor.

ستُمهَرُ أبكاري إذا وخدت بها

خَنوفُ المهارى بالفلا وضَبوعها

And you were not wronged to stumble in adorned

Attire—your organs do not refuse them.

وإني إذا ما ضقت ذرعاً ببلدة

لجواب أقطار البلاد ذروعها

Since indeed you sought your share of elevation,

So it leaped to distant ignoble ones excluding it.

وليس القوافي بالقوافي إن اتّقى

هجوعكم عن حقها وهجوعها

You were satiated at the market of palm trees unjustly, so receive good news,

You will be raised above it after a little while when its trunks grow.

وليست بأشباه الأفاعي عرامةً

متى لم يطل بالعيث فيكم ولوعها

And you said we surpassed men in merit and truth,

And what sort of men whose scales did not weigh you?

وكانت إذا أبدت خشوعاً فخيِّبت

أبى عزها أن يستقاد خشوعها

Who are you but spreader of improper lineages

Which their invalidity rebuts what he alleged.

ومن لم تجد في فضل كفيه مرتعاً

ففي عرضه لا في سواه رتوعها

May spit strike your mouths which I meant earlier,

Sons of Makhled, may he enliven your trunk bones and straighten them.

ألا تلكم الغيد العطابيل أصبحت

إلى غيركم أرشاقها وتلوعها

You attained wealth so you gained Bedouin character

And lineages amongst you spread their falsehood.

عذارى قواف كالعذارى خريدها

يقود الفتى نحو الصبا وشَموعها

And if the nomads’ houses were as charitable as you claim,

They would be buildings that did not shade you with their branches.

كسوناكم منها ونحن بِغرَّةٍ

مدائح لم تغبط بربح بُيوعها

If only you were refined masters,

You would not have liked the hunger of an Arab or its kind.

وكم نزعت منا إليكم مطامع

فأضحت وعنكم لا إليكم نزوعها

Your longing to Huzwa refused remembrance from you

While your hearts recall the recollection of Jukhaa melting them.

لقد ضللت وجناء باتت وأصبحت

يُهزُّ إليكم رحلها وقطوعها

You are the lanterns for the darkness of misguidance, its appearing,

If the relation of kinship connects it would be considered severed.

قضى ربها أن لا تحل نسوعها

يد الدهر إذ شدت إليكم نسوعها

I see the disease of life cured by yourfortune,

The worst of it is its benefits and lastingness.

تسربلتم النعمى فطال عثاركم

بأذيالها واسودَّ منها نصوعها

And this is Abu Al-Abbas alive, hoped for,

Striking the aspiring heads bowing them.

وما عطرت أثوابها إذ علتكمُ

ولا حسنت في عين راء دروعها

A young man from the clan of Al-Abbas, his reverence has climbed

High above the noblest of genealogies rising.

ولم تُظلَموا أن تعثروا في ملابسٍ

مُذيَّلةٍ أبواعُكم لا تبوعها

Distinctions for the attire of matters and their categories,

Unifier of the scattered matters and their collection.

على أنكم طلتم بحظ علائكم

فلجَّ بعيدانٍ لئامٍ منوعها

God and days have about him a deposit

Whereby troubles are healed and its emaciation is near.

بسقتم بسوق النخل ظلماً فأبشروا

ستسمو بكم عما قليل جذوعها

A distinguished quality did not cease in every situation leading it,

The blossom of beauty’s peak frightened it.

وقلتم رجحنا بالرجال بحقِّنا

وأي رجال لم تَزِنكم شُسوعها

So patience until you see days that

Their evils upon you, O people, will prolong.

وهل أنتم إلا مذيعو مَناسبٍ

تردُّ عليكم ما ادعاه ذيوعها

And you attained from him and his loyal friends

Flashes that do not fail to fulfill what is there of watering.

أحلّكم ورهاء يُرذمُ أنفُها

فيمخطها من شدة الموق كوعها

Indeed those are the dishonesty of evil and its manifestation,

May pigs of villages and their hordes suffice them.

مفكك أوصال معلَّل فقحةٍ

عضوضٌ بسفلاه الأيور بلوعها

They manifested as Bedouins and you burrowed wrongfully the lineage of their origin,

So you spent the night while the falsehood among you nested.

ضعيف اللُّتيّا في الدماغ سخيفها

قوي اللُّتيا في الحتار لذوعها

And birds of prey and pigeons are not equal, by my life,

Nor starlings and quails.

يلاحظُ دنياه فأحلى متاعها

طواميرُها في عينه وشموعها

You fulfilled all that exists of evil,

And days against you have awe rendering it dreadful.

وما عدمت وجعاءُ عبدون سلحةً

ولا طهرت إلا وفحل يقوعها

And eating haram made you complacent, so be forebearing,

Every glutton has a madness soon to obsess him.

أنوفكم أعني بما قلت آنفاً

بني مخلدٍ حيَّ الأنوفَ جدوعها

It is as if you were bitten by vermins and did not cease to have

Bites where its wound will not be saturated with blood money.

أفدتم ثراء فاستفدتم عروبةً

وقد فضح الأنساب منكم شيوعها

A state will be debased from you once its time comes,

With a state of honesty that its return’s shadow cast.

وإن بيوت البدو لو تصدقوننا

لأبنيةٌ ما ظللتكم نُطوعها

In it a group of Wahb’s house will stand

Who affectionately advised kings bowing their chests.

ولو أنكم كنتم دهاقينَ سادةً

لما راقكم جوع العريب ونوعها

They have a victorious state by their actions,

Victory refused to abandon from it the crowds.

أبت ذكر حزوى منكمُ واشتياقكم

إليها قلوب ذكرُ جُوخَى يَضوعها

Their swords preceded them in all merit,

And their bounty in every time like armor.

فَديتُم بني وهبٍ فإني رأيتهم

أبوا قذعةً يحتج فيها قذوعها

There, the hearts’ rancor is healed

Once your inferences deeply took root.

وأقنعهم من مجدهم ما كفاهمُ

وأعلى نفوس الراغبين قنوعها

Show me on that day your empowerment, that indeed,

It is cold to hearts that ulcerated and chewed.

وما درك الدهقان في قيل قائل

ألا ذاك خصاف النعال رقوعها

Neither did their blood drain at that time

Nor eyes over you tears effused.

ألا ذاك بناء الحياض ورودها

ألا ذاك حلاب اللقاح رضوعها

You summoned against it a soul that refuses

That is little in comparison to the most refusing tyrant.

وإن كان في عدنان نور نبوة

فَرُوْجٌ لظلماءِ الضلالِ صَدُوعها

So below you are distortions and nonsense that he who,

Distorts speech and crankiness manufactured.

ومن حكمها لعنُ الدعيِّ وثلبِهِ

إذا واصل الأرحام عُدَّ قطوعها

I am not a sayer of lies but I

Am the sayer of that which provokes the ignoble eater.

أرى سقم الدنيا بصحة حظكم

شفى داءها ضرّارُها ونفوعها

Pitier of noble ones whom they flourished and overflowed,

Stoner of vile ones whom they solidified and their skins thickened.

وهذا أبو العباس حيّاً مؤمّلاً

ضَروبُ الرؤوسِ الطامحات قَموعها

I give greetings flaring the nostrils

For if I am ignorant of my right, then I have what enflames it.

فتى من بني العباس كهلٌ جلاله

رَكوبٌ لأشراف النجاد طلوعها

If afterwards you still turned away arrogantly, then I

Am one who straightens the few tight nostrils.

فَروق لألباس الأمور فَصولها

ضَموم لأشتات الأمور جَموعها

With an edge swift like the blowing winds, and it reached

As shining light of glittering swords its shining.

ولله والأيام فيه وديعةٌ

تُداوى بها البلوى وشيكٌ نجوعها

Whoever obstructs its exhalation and coldness,

I have in store for him its wrapping and branding.

وما برحت في كل حالٍ تسوسها

له شيمٌ زهر المحاسن روعها

I am the seeker of her whom I am worthy of,

While others when she turns her behind to them, roam confused.

فصبراً لأيام له سترونها

يطول عليكم أيها القوم سوعها

I am not in terms of bounty, her soul,

Nor am I in terms of tribulation, her body that straightens from shaking.

وقد شمتمُ منه ومن أوليائه

بوارقَ لم يُخلِف هناك لموعها

The life was joyful and harmed its heavens (potential),

So for the people, its clouds are desolate barren land.

ألا تلك آساد الشرى وبروزها

فدتها خنازير القرى وقُبوعها

So do not despair of life nor be deceived by it,

Its Giver is its Depriver and its deprivation.

بدوا وجحرتم ظالمين بني استِها

فبتُّم وفي الأستاه منكم كُسوعها

وما يستوي في الطير صقر وهامة

لعمري ولا شحّاجها وسَجوعها

جمحتم إلى القصوى من الشر كله

وللدهر فيكم روعة سيروعها

وأبطركم أكل الحرام فأمهلوا

لكل أكول هوعةٌ سيهوعها

كأن قد دسعتم بالخبيث ولم تزل

لكم دَسَعاتٌ لا يُسقَّى دسوعها

ستُكسع منكم دولة حان بينُها

بدولة صدق قد أظل رجوعها

تقوم بها من آل وهب عصابةٌ

تحنَّت على نصح الملوك ضلوعها

لهم دولة منصورة بفعالهم

أبى النصر أن تنفض عنها جموعها

تقدمهم في كل فضل سيوفها

ومعروفهم في كل أزل دروعها

هنالك يشفى من صدورٍ غليلُها

إذا ما الدواهي طال فيكم شروعها

أرتني سعودي ذلك اليوم أنه

برود نفوس حُلِّئت ونُقوعها

ولا رقأت إبَّان ذاك دماؤهم

ولا أعين فاضت عليكم دموعها

منحتكموها شكم نفس أبية

قليل عن الطاغي الأبيِّ كيوعها

فدونكم شوهاء فوهاء صاغها

مُشوِّهُ أقوال وطوراً صَنوعها

وما كنت قوال الخنا غير أنني

قَؤولُ التي تشجي اللئيم سَموعها

رَؤومُ صفاةٍ أنبتت وتفجرت

رَجومُ صفاةٍ أصلدت وقَروعها

وإني لمنَّاح الأنوف تحيتي

فإن جهلت حقي فعندي نشوعها

فإن شمخت من بعد ذاك فإنني

قَذوعٌ لآنافٍ قليلٍ قُذوعها

بحدٍّ جرت جري الرياح فأصبحت

سطوع ضياء النيِّرين سطوعها

فمن صد عن نفَّاحها وبرودها

فعندي له لفّاحها وسَفوعها

وإني لطلاب التي أنا أهلها

وغيري إذا ولت قفاها تبوعها

وما أنا في حال العطايا فَروحها

وما أنا في حال البلايا جزوعها

لقد سرَّت الدنيا وضرت جناتَها

فمجّاجها للقوم أرياً لَسوعها

فلا تأس للدنيا ولا تغتبط بها

فوهابها سلابها وفجوعها
