1. كم يُعَزّ المُفَضَّلُ المبخوتُ

    ويُبَزُّ المحبَّبُ المنعوتُ

    How the outcast is despised, the disgraced abased,

    While the beloved, attributed one is lowered!

  2. أعتبَ الله بعد بلوى تشكَّى

    جَهْدَها الناسُ والصخورُ الصُّموتُ

    He complained to God, after suffering He reclaimed,

    People tried their utmost, and the silent rocks.

  3. أفَيَوْمَيْنِ خِلْتَ عُتباهُ تبقى

    ثم يُضحي وحبلُه مَبْتُوتُ

    Will two days of resentment remain

    Then it becomes a sacrifice, its rope severed?

  4. حاشا لله أن يُقصِّر بالعُتْ

    بى فيُلفى زمانُها وهو قوتُ

    Far be it from God to shorten the reprimand

    So its time rehearses while it’s potent.

  5. أنْشَرَ اللهُ دولةَ ابن سليما

    ن فأيْقِن بأنها لا تموتُ

    God spread the state of Ibn Suleiman

    So be certain that it does not die.

  6. ليس بعد النشورِ موتٌ فكبتاً

    للأعادي فكلهم مكبوتُ

    After resurrection there is no death in suppression

    To enemies, all are subdued.

  7. فألُ يُمنٍ أتاحه الله عمداً

    للسانٍ بيانُهُ منعوتُ

    The auspicious right hand God intentionally allowed

    To the eloquent tongue, its attributes withheld.

  8. شاهدٌ أن نعمةَ الله فيكم

    آل وهبٍ ما حالف اليمَّ حوتُ

    Witness that God’s blessing in you

    O Al Wahb never did the ocean whale collide.

  9. كم عدوٍّ لهم غدا وهو مغمُو

    رٌ بنعماءَ منهمُ لا مَقُوتُ

    How many enemies woke up overwhelmed

    With blessings from them, no livelihood.

  10. لو صحا ودَّ أن عمركُم المم

    دود فيه وعُمرَهُ المسْحوتُ

    If the compatriots’ limited lifespan persisted

    While theirs endured pulverized.

  11. كادكم معشرٌ وأوهنُ بيتٍ

    ما بنَتْه من غزلها العنكبوتُ

    A group tried to destroy your house

    That spiderwebs did not build.

  12. ولكُمْ أَنْعُمٌ عليهم ولكنْ

    قَلَّ ما يقبلُ الغُروسَ المُرُوتُ

    You have great favors upon them but rarely

    Do the arrogant accept the missed opportunity.

  13. أثمَروا شكلهم وهل يُثمر الخَر

    رُوبَ إلا شبيهُهُ اليَنبوتُ

    They bore their image but does the ostrich bear fruit

    Except its equivalent, the spurious.

  14. شَنِئَتْهم حُثالةٌ من أناس

    أيقنوا أن مُخَّهم منكوتٌ

    Scoundrels from the people were sure

    That their brains had perished.

  15. فهجَوْكم بأنكم منذ قُمتم

    أُثِّلَ الملك واقتنَى السُّبْروتُ

    They lampooned you that ever since you rose

    The reign was exemplified and the realm obtained.

  16. صدق القوم أنتُم قُطُب الدو

    لة ما عاقبتْ سُبوتاً سبوتُ

    The people spoke the truth, you’re the state’s pillar

    Assignment did not punish assignment.

  17. عيبُكم أنكم أناسٌ كرامٌ

    كلُّ شرٍّ بفضلكم مغتوتُ

    Your flaw is that you are noble people

    Every evil by your merit contained.

  18. لكمُ مطلبٌ يفوت ذوي الفَضْـ

    ـل وفضْلٌ مطلوبه لا يفوتُ

    You have a sought purpose that eludes the virtuous

    And favor sought that does not elude.

  19. لم تزالوا يقومُ بالشكر عنكم

    ما فعلتم والجاحدون سُكوتُ

    You have not ceased to stand in gratitude for you

    What you have done while the ungrateful silent.

  20. عندكم نائلٌ مُخَلَّى على العُسـ

    ـر وبأسٌ عمَّن هفا مكفوتُ

    In your presence, a requester freed upon hardship

    And might against whoever was audacious and restrained.

  21. حين لا جودُكم يجورُ عن القصْـ

    ـدِ ولا وجهُ عزمكم ملفوتُ

    When your generosity does not wrong the intention

    And the aspect of your determination not missed.

  22. فلتدُمْ نعمةُ الإله عليكم

    ما أقامت ودامتِ الملكوتُ

    So may God’s blessing upon you last

    As long as it settled and the infinite existed.

  23. وفداكُمْ من شانَ مِنَّتَه المنـ

    ـنُ وأَزرتْ بعزِّهِ الجبروتُ

    And sacrifice for what his favor meant

    And His might necessitated the supreme.

  24. حسبُنا حسبُنا بكم ربّنا اللّـ

    ـه أَبَينا أن يُعبدَ الطاغوتُ

    You suffice us, You suffice us our Lord God

    The Father we refused to worship the sorcerer.

  25. غيرُكم يا مَثابةَ المُلك من يَنْ

    أى به يومَ نوبةٍ مشموتُ

    Other than you O realm of reign from whom

    Does one gain in a day of adversity eradicated?

  26. وفداءٌ لما بنته مساعيْ

    كُم من المجد ما بَنَتْهُ النُّحوتُ

    And sacrifice for what your efforts built

    Of glory that landmarks have not erected.

  27. ووقاءٌ لما عليكم من الأح

    ساب والسِّتر ما حَوته التخوتُ

    And protection for what befell you

    Of reckoning and the veil that confusion did not contain.

  28. إنما يطلبُ الترفُّعَ بالبِز

    زةِ والثروةِ الرجالُ التُّحوتُ

    But the arrogant man seeks exaltation

    In clothes and wealth constantly folded.

  29. هل يَسُرّ الكريمَ أنَّ كِساهُ

    كَمُنَاهُ وعِرضُه مَهْرُوتُ

    Does it please the generous that his dress is his residence

    And his integrity infringed?

  30. إن يحارِبْكُمُ من الأرض خطبٌ

    فله في السماء قِرنٌ ثَبوتُ

    If one wages war against you on earth

    Then for him in the heavens lies a horned.

  31. لو رأى الدهرُ جَدّكم في تَعَالي

    ه لأضحى كأنه مبهوتُ

    Had fate seen your ancestors in their prime

    It would have been as if it was confounded.

  32. آل وهب ما رَوْعكُم أن نُهيتم

    كم نُهيتم والنائراتُ خُفوتُ

    O Al Wahb no awe made you panic since you were banned

    As you were banned while the sparklers covered.

  33. كم رأينا إنهابَكُم ما ملكْتم

    في العطايا إلا بقايا تَقُوتُ

    We have seen you looting what you owned

    Of grants except for livelihood remnants.

  34. جُودُ أيديكُمُ أحدُّ من النهْـ

    ـب وأمضى إن فكَّر المبهوتُ

    The open-handedness of your hands sharper than clawing

    And more conclusive if the confounded contemplated.

  35. فاصبروا إن جَدَّكم طالبُ الثأ

    ر وهل جَدُّكم بثأر يفوتُ

    So be patient, your ancestors avenge

    And will your ancestors their revenge ever waste?

  36. لن يضرَّ الأصولَ وهي رواس

    ورقٌ من فروعها محتوتُ

    It will not harm the roots, which are hardy

    If some secondary branches are contained.

  37. حُسُن رأي الأمير كنزٌ لكم با

    قٍ وعرنينُ من بَغَى مَسْلوتُ

    The opinion of the prince a treasure for you intact

    And the roar of whoever sought slipped.

  38. عزُّكم في نصابه آل وهبٍـ

    ـوالروابي محلُّكم لا الخبُوتُ

    Your honor is securely inherent O Al Wahb

    While your dwellings not the burrows.

  39. لم يَجُع ضيفُكم ولا الجار مَزْؤو

    دٌ له في جواركم مَبْهوتُ

    Neither guest nor neighbor of yours felt strangers

    Lost in your neighborhood confused.

  40. ولقد أشعرَ الجُناة عليكم

    حَذَر الطير والعُقابُ تَخُوتُ

    And it sufficed to warn the ones who attacked you

    The birds’ and hawk’s apprehension.

  41. وكفاكُم بذاك زادكُم اللَّـ

    ـهُ علوَّاً وضدُّكُم مَذعوتُ

    And that suffices you, may God give you

    Loftiness while your counterpart is subjugated.

  42. آل وهبٍ لقد علمتُ يقيناً

    أن شعري بمجدكم مَنْخوتُ

    O Al Wahb I have truly known

    That my poetry in your glory lodged.

  43. إن أكن قد أجدتُ نحت قريضٍ

    فيكُمُ جادَ ذلك المنحوتُ

    If I correctly carved a poem

    It generously flowed from the engraved.

  44. ليَ نظُم الثناء فيكم ولكن

    لكُمُ الدرُّ منه والياقوتُ

    I have the stringing of praise in you but

    For you are the pearls and rubies.

  45. من معانيكُمُ نظمتُ مديحي

    ومعاني النُّعوتِ ثم النعوتُ

    From your meanings, I stringed my eulogy

    And the implications beyond just implications.

  46. هل مِلاكُ النعوتِ إلا المعاني

    أو قِوامُ الأبيات إلا البيوتُ

    Are the owners of implications anything but meanings?

    Or the structure of verses but homes?

  47. ما إخالُ المديح يوجب حقاً

    لي عليكم كما يرى المسبوتُ

    My exaggerated praise does not duly warrant

    A right upon you as envisioned by the deluded.

  48. ليس للمادحين حق عليكم

    بل على اللَّه إذ ثَناكم قُنوتُ

    The praisers have no rights upon you

    But upon God for extolling you devoutly.

  49. ثم إني أقولُ قولة صادٍ

    غاب عنه المُرَوَّقُ البَيُّوتُ

    Then I say an earnest saying

    That misses the well-off homeowner.

  50. لهف نفسي أَلا يُعيرُنِيَ النجْـ

    ـدةَ من قبل موته طالوتُ

    My eager soul oh that pride

    Does not lend me before his death Talut.

  51. فيرى اللَّه كلَّ باغٍ عليكم

    وهو مني بحتفه مبغوتُ

    So that God sees every aggressor upon you

    While by his demise with me destroyed.

  52. لو أطقتُ القتال عنكم لقاتلْـ

    ـتُ ولو أنَّ قِرنيَ التابوتُ

    If I could withstand the fight for your sake I would fight

    Even if it were my casket.

  53. دونكم مستقيمةَ السمتِ فيكم

    حين تَعوجُّ بالكلام السُّموتُ

    I am straightforward of pace within you when

    Crookedness creeps into the elevated.

  54. شُكْرَ عُرفٍ يجري بكم غير موقوْ

    تٍ فَداكُمُ من عُرفُهُ موقوتُ

    Gratitude of an act that constantly flows through you

    Without stopping, by what flows specified.

  55. من أكفٍّ بيضٍ غدتْ وهي مشفو

    عٌ لدينا بجودها ممتوتُ

    From white palms that came outstretched

    To us with their generosity weaves cemented.

  56. هاكُموها تروق مُستجمَع القوْ

    مِ بسحرٍ لم يُؤْتَه هاروتُ

    With magic that Harut was not given.

    A genie crafted it, not humans

  57. صاغها صائغٌ من الجن لا الإنْ

    س يروغ بِكرَ الكلام نَكوتُ

    Who handle words to swoon the coquettish.

    Transforming convoluting, had one day slipped

  58. حُوَّلٌ قُلَّبٌ لو انْغَلَّ يوماً

    في خُروتٍ لأزْلَقته الخُروتُ

    Into burrows, the burrows would have slipped it.

    It did not harm him that he was not an Arab

  59. لم يَضِرهُ أن لم يكن عربياً

    دارهُ قَرْقَرى أو المَرُّوتُ

    His abode Qarqarat or Marwah.

    From it blew a scent, O Al Wahb

  60. طابَ منها نسيمُها آل وَهبٍ

    فهو مِسكٌ في عنبر مفتوتُ

    It is musk in crumbled ambergris.

    And its broadcast aroma, some people said

  61. وذَكا نَشرُها فقال أناسٌ

    صبَّحتنا بخمرها بيروتُ

    Beirut greeted us with its wine.
