1. إذا المرء لم يُظهر لطالب رِفده

    عُبوساً ولا بشراً فكن منه يائسا

    If a man does not show his guest either a frowning face or a cheerful one, then despair of him,

    For he who shows a frowning face is a miser who intended generosity but met you frowning.

  2. فإنَّ الذي يبدو العبوسُ بوجهه

    بخيلٌ نوى جواداً فلاقاك عابسا

    Such is the case of misers when they intend kindness or friendship: they show frowning faces.

    But he who shows you a cheerful face is a generous man; when he gives to you he does not grudge another.

  3. وهاتيك حالُ الباخلين إذا نووا

    سَدىً أو ندىً أبدَوا وجوهاً عوابسا

    It is the way of the generous to beam their faces when asked for favors; they do not deflate hopes.

    As for him whose face is the same in both encounters, that is he who refused you outright.

  4. وأما الذي يُبدي لك البشرَ فامرؤٌ

    جوادٌ إذا أعطاك لم يُعط نافسا

    And he who turned his back on you in disdain, did not trouble his thoughts about you.

  5. ومن شيمة الأجواد بَسطُ وجوههم

    إذا سُئلوا لا ينفَسونَ النفائسا

  6. وأما الذي بين اللقاءين وجهُهُ

    فذاك الذي أبدى لك المنع يابسا

  7. وذاك الذي ألقاك عن ظهر باله

    هواناً فلم يُخطرك بالبال هاجسا
