1. I took you as armor and shield, that you might ward off

the foes’ arrows from me—but you became their very points.

  2. I had hoped to find in you the best of helpers,

when the left hand had forsaken the right.

  3. So if you will not preserve, for the sake of my friendship,

a sacred bond, then be neither against it nor for it.

  4. Stand apart from me in the place of one excused,

and leave my arrows, the foe, and their arrows alone.

  5. How many enemies’ archers have I disarmed,

and how many men withdrew without my even noticing!

  6. Nor has solitude, coupled with humiliation, made me desolate

when war arrays its cavalry and infantry.

  7. Such is the soul: either it lives in gladness,

or else it is gain for it to pass utterly away.

  8. Let all remembrance of life be effaced, if it withholds

from a man all but its murk and dregs.
