1. Does one gaze ever end except in another gaze?

    Or is one longing ever fulfilled except in another longing?

  2. And in you is the finest thing to which souls aspire;

    where, apart from you, is there any resting place for hearing and sight?

  3. Can you find for me any fresh, enchanting beauty

    that you left among the earth’s plants and trees,

  4. so you could say, “Its radiant charm drew him away”?

    For the object of the longing within me gives the lie to faithlessness.

  5. Neither sun nor moon has surpassed your beauty,

    save in the renown of the names sun and moon.

  6. By God, whenever seeing you wearied my gaze, I brought it back—

    only to meet you as though after a long absence.
