O Time, your assaying of anyone free from dross
can spring only from injustice or caprice.
Do not assay the noble; truly they are
the purest souls ever lodged in bodies.
You have unjustly stricken Abu al-Husayn with illness, though
in generosity he has spent away all that was earned.
As if, thirsting, he drank for glory,
or, starving, ate for it.
Hasten the illness on its journey away from him, and
let him enjoy, in health, long dwelling and lingering.
Resolute, sword-keen of edge, despite
whatever roughness and sluggishness are in him;
the giver of lavish bounty whenever
the desperate, anguished suppliant has gone unaided;
a man of renowned good deeds, brother to ab—
—stention from evil acts and obscenity;
a youth—when praise is forged from false—
—hood for a base man, a piece of botched workmanship,
the truth of his inward nature blends musk for him:
what musk is there that has not been blended?
Recoiling from evil with utter recoil,
springing toward good with every impulse;
the ear grazes richly upon his praises
with a delight it finds in no others.
