1. يا من يَعدُّ من الجواهرِ عُرفَه

    ويعدُّ حَمدِيه من الأعراضِ

    O you who count your largesse among jewels—among substances—

    and count my praise of you among mere accidents,

  2. غالطتَ نفسك أو غَلِطتَ وربما

    وقعتْ سهامُك في سوى الأغراضِ

    you have deceived yourself—or else you erred; and sometimes

    your arrows have fallen wide of their targets.

  3. فاستقضِ عقلكَ لا هواك فإنه

    عند التباس الأمر أعدلُ قاضي

    So appoint your reason, not your caprice, as judge; for it is

    the fairest judge when a matter grows confused.
