Wakefulness has replaced sleep for my eyes,
since the gazelle turned from me and forsook me.
A young gazelle lodged anguish in my heart
and, with tears, barred my eyes from sight.
His haunch is a sandhill, and above his waist—
a tender bough made radiant by a moon.
His mouth has teeth set delicately apart,
and in his eyes, despite their languor, is the beauty of deep black against white.
May my father be the ransom of that beloved who forsakes me!
Love has left me no strength to endure separation from him.
You two, divert me from the assaults of memory,
and with the cup drive thought from my heart.
And let me hear now a voice for which, so long,
my soul has nearly burst.
How lovely are the pilgrimage and the days at Mina,
our place of prayer, and the kissing of the Stone.
