أنا راعٍ لما صفا منك قدماً

عائفٌ منك آجناً مطروقا

I remain faithful to what in you was pure long ago,

and turn away from water of yours grown stagnant and much-frequented.

فانسَ ذكري فإن قلبيَ ناسٍ

لك ما عاقب الغروبُ الشروقا

So forget all mention of me, for my heart will forget

you for as long as sunset follows sunrise.

كن كأن لم تلاقني قطُّ في النا

س ولا تجعلنَّ ذكراي سوقا

Be as though you had never met me at all among peo—

—ple, and do not make the mention of me a marketplace.

وتيقَّن بأنَّني غير راءٍ

لك حقّاً حتى ترى لي حقوقا

And be certain that I acknowledge no right

of yours until you recognize rights of mine,

وبأني مفوِّقٌ ألفَ فوقٍ

لك إن فوقت يمينك فوقا

and that I am one to nock a thousand arrows

at you, if your right hand nocks a single one.
