1. قُلْ لأيوبَ والكلامُ سجالُ

    والجوابات ذاتَ يومٍ تُدالُ

    Say to Ayyub, and the speech is quarrelsome

    And the answers one day will be given

  2. اسكتوا بعدَها فلا تذكروا الشؤ

    م حياً فأنتُمُ الآجالُ

    Be silent afterwards, so do not mention misfortune

    While alive, for you are the limited time

  3. أنا شؤمي فيما تقولون عزَّا

    لٌ ولكنَّ شؤمَكم قتَّالُ

    My misfortune is in what you say condolences

    While your misfortune is deadly

  4. بالذي أدْرَكَ المؤيّدَ منكم

    وابنَ سعدانَ تضربُ الأمثالُ

    By what has befallen Al-Mu'ayyad among you

    And Ibn Sa'dan, examples are given

  5. زُرتموه والصالحاتُ عليه

    مقبلاتٌ فأدبر الإقبالُ

    You visited him while good deeds upon him

    Were forthcoming, so good fortune departed

  6. حين درَّتْ له أفاويقُ دنيا

    هُ دلفتُم له فكان الفِصالُ

    When the misfortunes of the world smiled at him

    You turned away from him, so it was the separation

  7. إن شؤماً حُلَّتْ به عقدةُ العَه

    دِ لشؤمٌ تزول منه الجبالُ

    If a knot of covenant befell him with misfortune

    It's a misfortune mountains pass away from

  8. ليس بدْعاً من الحوادثِ أن يُع

    زَلَ والٍ وأن تموتَ الرّجالُ

    It is no wonder that power declines

    And men die, it is the usual way

  9. إنما البدعُ أن تزولَ أُمورٌ

    لم يكن يهتدي إليها الزوالُ

    But the wonder is that things disappear

    Which the decline was not guided to

  10. كالذي حاقَ بالمؤيَّدِ منكُمْ

    بعدما نُوِّطَتْ به الآمالُ

    Like what befell Al-Mu'ayyad among you

    After hopes were entrusted in him

  11. ذلك الشؤمُ يا بني أمّ شيخٍ

    يُمكنُ القائلين فيه المقالُ

    That is the misfortune, O sons of the Sheikh's mother

    Which permits critics to speak

  12. ذاكَ شؤمٌ فيهِ سِمام الأفاعي

    ناجزُ النقد ليس فيه مِطالُ

    That is a misfortune, in it the venom of snakes

    Impregnable to criticism, no reproach in it

  13. ذاك شؤمٌ كالسيل عفَّى على القط

    رِ جُلالٌ كما يكون الجلالُ

    That is a misfortune, like a torrential flood on the land

    Majesty, as majesty can be

  14. ذاك شؤمٌ لو جاور البحرَ يومي

    نِ لأمسى وليس فيه بلالُ

    That is a misfortune, if it stayed by the sea daily

    It would end up without fresh water

  15. ذاك شؤمٌ لو كان في جنة الخل

    د لحالت بأهلها الأحوالُ

    That is a misfortune, if it were in the Garden of Eternity

    It would change the state of its people

  16. ذاك شؤمُ لا يثلم الدهر حدّي

    ه وما لم يَزُل فليس يُزالُ

    That misfortune does not breach its limit

    And what does not cease will not cease

  17. ذاك شؤمٌ شؤمُ البسوسِ وغبرا

    ء وشؤم الورى عليه عِيالُ

    That is the misfortune of misfortunes and dust

    And the misfortune of mankind dependent on it

  18. كالذي أدركَ المؤيدَ منكم

    وهْو في رأسِ نجوةٍ لا يُنالُ

    Like what befell Al-Mu'ayyad among you

    While at the peak of glory, unobtainable
