قل لابن بلبل لِمْ غلِطْ

تَ وأنتَ شهمٌ قُلقلُ

Tell the nightingale's son, why hast thou erred

Thou, while a brave nightingale, did chirp.

أنّى يكون أبا لِصَق

رٍ من أبوه بلبلُ

Whence comes a father to the whistling air

Whose sire is a nightingale with goodly note?

نسبٌ يناقِضُ كنيةً

ما مثلُ ذا بك يجمُلُ

A lineage contradicting the surname,

None like it becomes thee.

أغفلت عمّا فيهما

ما عذرُ مثلك يُقبلُ

Thou hast ignored what was in them both,

No excuse of thine can be accepted.
