1. طرقتْ أسماءُ والركبُ هُجودُ

    والمطايا جُنَّحُ الأزْوارِ قُودُ

    Asma' knocked, and the travelers were lost,

    And the mounts were winged creatures of fates obscure,

  2. طرقَتْنا فأنالتْ نائلاً

    شُكرهُ لو كان في النُّبْه الجُحودُ

    She knocked us, so she attained her wish,

    Though the ungrateful would deny it for sure,

  3. ثم قالتْ وأحسَّتْ عَجَبي

    من سراها حيثُ لا تسري الأسودُ

    Then she said – and her wonder was evident:

    “How wondrous that she came here, where the lions roam!”

  4. لا تعجَّبْ من سُرانا فالسُّرى

    عادة الأقمار والناسُ هجودُ

    “Do not wonder at our coming here, for coming by night

    Is the wont of moons, while people sleep at home”

  5. عجبي من بذلها ما بذلَتْ

    وسُراها وهي مِشماسٌ خَرُودُ

    My wonder was at her generosity,

    Her coming here though she is wild and shy

  6. نَوَّلَتْ وهْي منيعٌ نيْلُها

    وسَرتْ وهْي قطيعُ الخطْوِ رُودُ

    She turned away, difficult to attain,

    And came to us, though she steps lightly by

  7. غادةٌ لوهبَّتِ الريحُ لها

    آدَها من مسّها ما لا يؤودُ

    A doe, had the wind made her scent flow,

    Her lover would follow and never let go

  8. يشهدُ الطرْفُ المُراعي أنها

    سرقتْ من قدِّها الحسْنَ القُدودُ

    The watchful eyes saw that she had stolen

    From her neck beauty that would not forego

  9. أمكن الخُمْصُ وقد خَاليتُها

    من عناق كاد يأباه النُّهودُ

    I managed to embrace her, though she avoids

    The embrace that even the loving may despise

  10. فاعتنقنا والحشا وَفقُ الحشا

    ونبا عن صدْرها صدْرٌ ودُودُ

    So we embraced, as love dictates we should

    And she sighed, her breast over mine laid nice

  11. ولَعَهْدي قبل هاتيك بها

    وهْي زوْراء عن الوصْل حَيُودُ

    By my troth, before this she would refuse

    Contact, though her longing she could not disguise

  12. تُسأَلُ الأدنَى فتحكى أنها

    من ظِباءٍ لا تَدَرَّاها الفُهُودُ

    If asked, she would claim she is just a doe

    That hunters cannot catch, however hard they try

  13. ظبْيةٌ تَصطاد من طافتْ به

    ربَّما طاف بك الظبْيُ الصَّيُودُ

    A wild doe, that hunts those she circles around

    Perhaps she will circle around where you lie

  14. وأبيها لقد اختال بها

    يوم ذادت مائلي أوْدٌ أوُودُ

    And her father refused to give her away

    The day she leaned towards me, try as he might

  15. أَرِجَتْ منها فلاةٌ جَرْدَةٌ

    وأضاءتْ ووجُوه الليل سُودُ

    She arrived from him in barren wilderness

    And shone, as faces of night glowed bright

  16. قلتُ لما عَبِقَتْ أرْواحُها

    بالملا لا دَرَسَتْ هذي العُهودُ

    I said, as her being exuded incense;

    “Is this Ibn Yazeed’s perfumes suffice?

  17. أَثَنَاءُ ابنِ يَزيدٍ بيننا

    أم نسيمٌ بثَّه روْضٌ مَجُودُ

    Or just a breeze that came from a fragrant meadow?”

    What shade of bliss came to me this night?

  18. أيُّ ظِلٍّ من نعيم فاءَ لي

    ليلتي لوْ كان للظلِّ ركودُ

    If only night's shadows had permanence though

    What a retreat she granted me! If only

  19. يا لها من خَلْوةٍ أُعْطِيتُها

    لو أحقَّتْ أوْ عَدَا الليلَ النُّفُودُ

    The night would extend, and the cocks not crow

    Yet when morn arrived, she was lost

  20. أصبحتْ فقْداً وكانتْ نِعمَةً

    والعطايا حين يُسْلَبْنَ فُقُودُ

    Gifts given, then taken, bring only woe

    Not like Ibn Yazeed's gifts, for they

  21. لا كَنُعْمَى ابن يزيدٍ إنها

    أبداً حيث يلاقيها الوُجودُ

    Will remain, wherever existence may flow

    Majid never withheld a hand

  22. ماجدٌ لم يَسْتَثِبْ قطُّ يداً

    وهو إن أبْدَيت بالشكر رصودُ

    And if I show gratitude, it will overflow

    Many fathers of glory has he

  23. رُبَّ آباءٍ مراجيحَ له

    كلُّهم أرْوَعُ للمحل طَرُودُ

    Each more wondrous for the dynasty's halo

    Whenever Bellies' clan bared its stomach

  24. حِين يعْرى بطنُ كحْل كلُّه

    وظُهورُ الأرض شَهباء جَرُودُ

    And the land’s backs were burnt dry and sallow

    He would forgive their sins, as nobles forgive,

  25. صُفُحٌ عن جارميهمْ كَرَماً

    وكذا الساداتُ تعفو وتجود

    Not prone to vengeance, inclined to bestow

    From them he sought loftiness, sincerity

  26. يُطلَبُ الإغضاء منهم والندى

    حيثُ لا تُنْسى حُقوقٌ بل حُقودُ

    Where rights are remembered, not lineages hollow

    They never lacked the honor they built

  27. ما خَلَوْا من شرفٍ يَبْنونَهُ

    مُذْ خَلتْ منهم حُجُورٌ ومُهودُ

    Above Nejd, which no glory could outgrow

    He feared the say of all Muslims:

  28. منْهُمُ من نُصِرَ الحقُّ به

    إذ من الأوْثان للنَّاس عُبُودُ

    “By inheritance alone, you shadows throw”

    So he strove to seek his family’s heights

  29. أيُّ قرْنٍ باد منهم لم يكن

    حَقَّهُ لو أنصفَ الدهرُ البُيُودُ

    With earnest effort that would never plateau

    Walking their path, following guidance

  30. لو تَراهم قلتَ آسادُ الشّرى

    أو سُيُوفٌ حُسِرتْ عنها الغُمودُ

    Upright in conduct, refusing to bow

    The heavier the burdens of loftiness

  31. شَيَّدَتْ أسْلافُهُ بنْيانه

    فوْقَ نَجْدٍ لا تُضاهيه النُّجُودُ

    The humbler he was, though he’d status endow

    If you tried to slight him, you’d incite

  32. واتَّقَى قوْلَ المُسامِينَ له

    إنما بالإرْثِ أصبحت تَسُودُ

    Like fire well stoked, he’d fiercely glow

    He'd tremble with a rage that refused

  33. فسعى يطلب عُلْيا أهلِه

    سَعْيَ جِدٍّ لم يخالطهُ سُمودُ

    In him decline of glory to show

    You who ask of his manners, know

  34. سالكاً مِنْهاجَهُمْ يَتْلُو الهُدى

    صائب السيرة ما فيه حُيُودُ

    In seriousness he melts, in religion he’s stone

    How much he suffered worldly woes!

  35. كلَّما حُمِّلَ أعباء العلا

    ذلَّ في عزٍّ كما ذلَّ القَعودُ

    Yet he answered adversity's call and rose

    Not like the indifferent whose repute

  36. فمتى استَهْضمتَه اسْتَحْمَشْتَهُ

    مثلَ ما يسْتَحْمِشُ النارَ الوقودُ

    Is but death, from all custom far thrown

    A group where if they intend a good deed

  37. وَعَرَتْهُ هِزَّةٌ تَأبى له

    أن يُرى فيه عن المجد خُمُودُ

    They balk, though boldness to evil shown

    Would that they were apes, emulating the ways

  38. أيها السائل عن أخلاقه

    في الجدا ذوْبٌ وفي الدِّين جُمودُ

    Of men, as apes copy gestures half known!

    I said to my age, as it oppressed

  39. كمْ مَرى الدنيا له إبْساسُهُ

    واستجاب الدَّرُّ والدنيا جَدُودُ

    The virtuous, shadows obscurely sown:

    The vile bid you good morrow, for them

  40. لا كقوم هامد معروفُهُمْ

    بل هُمُ موْتى عن العُرفِ هُمُودُ

    You allow free rein, while choking men of renown

    Oh time, wherein all is reversed!

  41. معشر فيهم نُكولٌ إن نَوَوْا

    فِعْلَ خيرٍ وعلى الشر مُرودُ

    Mounts’ blankets are now but animal skins torn

    If Ibn Yazeed grants me respite

  42. ليتهمْ كانوا قُروداً فحكوْا

    شِيم الناس كما تَحْكي القرودُ

    From you, my eyes will never show scorn

    Thumal, the hoped for, unfetter of bonds

  43. ولقد قلتُ لدهري إذ غدا

    وهو للأخيْار ظلّامٌ ضَهُودُ

    Nature made free, spirit made loose, vigour full blown

    Azd became radiant, and he shone between them

  44. يسْلَم الوغْدُ عليه وله

    إن رأى حُرَّاً هريرٌ وشُدُودُ

    Like a mountain between deer and goats strewn

    Bringing to life whoever of them death took

  45. يا زماناً عُكسَتْ أحواله

    فسُروج الخيل تعلوها اللُّبُودُ

    While from the folk the vile spirits were thrown

    Say to he who denies his outstanding merit

  46. إن يُجرْني ابنُ يزيد مرّةً

    منك لا يُلْمِم بِعَيْنَيَّ سُهودُ

    As the Jews denied the truth so clearly shown

    In denying him, you opposed your fortune

  47. الثُّماليُّ ثِمالُ المُرْتجَى

    مُطلِقُ الأصفاد والطَّلْقُ الصّفُودُ

    So desist and leave, like Thamud overthrown

    His virtues cannot enumerated be

  48. أضحت الأزْدُ وأضحى بينها

    جبلاً وهْيَ رِعانٌ ورُيودُ

    Double the sands that cloak this earthly zone

    O Abu Al-Abbas, I'm a man who hates

  49. ناعشاً منْ حَيَّ منهُمْ ناشراً

    من أجنَّتْهُ من القوم اللُّحودُ

    Those who stubbornly the truth have disowned

    By God, you're the man whom I love

  50. قل لمن أنكر بغْياً فضلَهُ

    مثل ما أنكَرَتِ الحقَّ يَهودُ

    As I love bowing down before the Throne

    I have not ceased being your loyal footman, heart and hand and tongue since I served in your troops

  51. إنما عاندت إذ عاندتَهُ

    حظَّك الأوفَرَ فابعَدْ وثمودُ

    Witness that you're a teeming sea

    With gifts from your essence ceaselessly strown

  52. وانْهَ مَنْ يُحْصى حَصاه إنه

    ضعْفُ ما ضمَّ من الرمل زَرودُ

    Your ripe juicy pearls gathered effortlessly

    Provide for us necklaces looped and sewn

  53. يا أبا العباس إني رَجُلٌ

    فيَّ عمَّنْ عاند الحقَّ عُنودُ

    But the sea is bitter brine, while you’re

    The fresh sweet drink, coolness easily known

  54. ويميناً إنك المرْءُ الذي

    حُبُّهُ عندي سواءٌ والسُّجودُ

    If affairs have kept me from you

    Though you I wished to see, and restfulness disown

  55. لم أزَلْ قِدْماً وقلبي ويدي

    ولساني لك مُذْ كنتُ جُنودُ

    I'm one banned from sweet potions that heal

    A thirst that makes life without them moan

  56. شاهدٌ أنك بحرٌ زاخرٌ

    لك من نفسك مَدٌّ بل مُدودُ

    So provide me a cause that allows

    Me to enter your sea, if blessings have grown

  57. يُجْتَنَى دُرُّكَ رَطباً ناعماً

    فلنا منه شُنوفٌ وعُقُودُ

    And undertake my need, appointing one

    Through whom stacks of wares can be easily thrown

  58. غير أن البحر ملحٌ آسنٌ

    ولأنتَ المشْرَبُ العذْبُ البَرودُ

    My need weighs heavy, so carry its load

    Do not let it burden you, though you the mighty throne

  59. ولئن أقعدني عنك الذي

    ساقني نحوك ما اختِيرَ القُعودُ

    Learn what you do not yet know

    Some things whose price cannot be easily shown

  60. أنا صادٍ ذادني عن مشْرَبٍ

    سائغٍ يشفي الصَّدى دهْرٌ كَنودُ

    That glory has a steep and narrow path

    Up which, with hardship, man must climb and groan

  61. فَتَنَهْنَهْتُ عليماً أنَّني

    إن تطعَّمْتُك بدْءاً سأعودُ

    And that when a master grants a lowly one power

    The master rules, while the slave obeys his dictate alone

  62. ألْحَظُ الرِيَّ وحشْوي غُلَّةٌ

    غير أن ليس يُواتيني الوُرودُ

    And that he who does good, others defer to

    Rarely is an unguided creature tightly reined

  63. ومن البَرْح لَحاظي مشرباً

    أنا مشغوفٌ به عنْهُ مَذودُ

    It is not built up by futile platitudes

    Nor trodden by frivolity, faces prone

  64. فأعِرْني سبباً يُوردُني

    بحْرَك الغَمْرَ أعانتْك السُّعودُ

    Rather, by a free man exerting himself

    While creation sleeps, he wakes fitfully moaning

  65. وهْو أن تنهض لي في حاجتي

    نهضةً يُكوى بها الجارُ الحسودُ

    And by him showing, with his cheeks' flash

    Faces where frowns and rejection have grown

  66. وتُخلِّيني لما أمتاحُهُ

    منك فالأشْغال بالحال قيودُ

    And by his ears being battered by what

    The insolent and foolish and vile have thrown

  67. أزِلِ السَّدَّ الذي قد عاقني

    عنك زالت دون ما تهوى السُّدودُ

    All I enumerated, the prices of glory

    For which, from them, gold coins can be bought and loaned

  68. يا أخَا النَّهْض الذي ما مثله

    حين لا تنهض بالقوم الجُدودُ

    So regard me as one whose hand is yours

    I am indebted, until vines twist and trees have grown

  69. لي مديحٌ قلتُهُ في سَيّدٍ

    لم تزل تُهْدي له الشعرَ الوُفودُ

    With your hands, that if once denied

    Witnesses would rise up from where they were sown

  70. من حَبير الشِّعْر من أسْمَعُهُ

    فوعاه قال روضٌ أو بُرُودُ

    In infidelity's darkness they shine like pillars

    Lit up in black night, towering tall and lone

  71. كلما أنشدَه في محفلٍ

    ذَلِقُ المقْوَل جيَّاشٌ شَرودُ

    So befriend me, friend me, my gratitude overflowing, pouring endlessly like the constantly moving streams

    And help me in my need, recruiting one through whom

  72. هيلَت الأسماعُ من لفْظٍ له

    واقْشعرّتْ لمعانيه الجُلودُ

    Upon people, gifts pile up easily thrown

    A free and noble man helps in needs

  73. ولَّدَتْهُ فِطْنَةٌ إنسيَّةٌ

    تدَّعيها الجنُّ غرّاءٌ وَلُودُ

    Not a envious one, but a giver widely known

    He seeks to fulfill needs, not covet and hoard

  74. يتلظَّى بين وَصْلَيْ شاعرٍ

    لُدُّ قَوْل الشعر والشعر لَدودُ

    Rarely is one bound who himself has not bound and tightly sewn

  75. أذْعَنَ المدْحُ له في شاعرٍ

    يغْزُر المنطق فيه ويجودُ

  76. فجرى في القول وامتدَّ له

    وتناهى حين ردَّتْهُ الحُدودُ

  77. فاستمعْ شعري فإن أحْمَدْتَهُ

    حين يرعى الفكرُ فيه وَيَرودُ

  78. فاحْتَقبْ حمدي بإسْماعِكَهُ

    مَلكاً يملكهُ حلْمٌ وجودُ

  79. ليَ في مَدْحيَ فيه أمَلٌ

    وبلاغٌ وله فيه خلودُ

  80. عارضٌ أمطر غيري وَدَعَتْ

    رائدي منْهُ بُروقُ ورُعودُ

  81. العَلاء المبتَنى شُمّ العُلا

    فوق ما أَثَّل قَحطانُ وهُودُ

  82. وابن من حقَّق تأْويلَ اسمه

    فله في كل علياءَ صُعودُ

  83. حاجتي ثقْلٌ وقد حُمّلْتَهَا

    فاحْتملْها لا تكاءَدْكَ كَؤودُ

  84. وتَعلَّمْ غيرَ ما مُستَأْنفٍ

    علْم شيء أيها العِدُّ المَكُودُ

  85. أن للمجد سبيلاً وعْرةً

    ضيِّقاً مسلَكُها فيه صَعودُ

  86. وبما يُولي مَسُوداً سَيّدٌ

    أمَرَ السيدُ فانقادَ المسُودُ

  87. وبأن أَحْسَنَ ذا أذعنَ ذا

    قَلَّ ما قِيد بلا شيء مَقودُ

  88. ليس تُثْنيَ بالأباطيل الطُّلَى

    لا ولا تُوطأ بالهزْل الخُدودُ

  89. بل بأن يُنْصب حُرٌّ نفسَه

    وبأن يسهر والناس رُقودُ

  90. وبأن يَلْقَى بضاحي وجْهِه

    أوْجُهاً فيها عُبُوسٌ وصُدودُ

  91. وبأن يقرع بَابَيْ سَمْعِهِ

    ما يقول الكَزُّ والهَشُّ الرَّقودُ

  92. كل ما عدَّدْتُ أثمانَ العُلا

    ولمَا يُبْتاعُ منهنَّ نُقُودُ

  93. فاتَّخِذْ عندي لك الخيرُ يداً

    ترتهنْ شكري بها ما اخضرَّ عُودُ

  94. من أياديك التي لو جُحدَتْ

    مرةً قام لها منْهُ شُهودُ

  95. تُجتَلى في غُمَّةِ الكفْر كما

    يُجتلى في ظُلمةِ الليل العَمودُ

  96. وتألَّفْني تَألَّفْ صاحباً

    بي أَلوفاً شكره شكْرٌ شَرودُ

  97. واستَعِنْ في حاجتي واندبْ لها

    من به رَاقَتْ على الناس عَتودُ

  98. يَسْعَ في الحاجة حُرٌّ ماجدٌ

    لا حَسودٌ لأخيه بل حَشودُ
