سقته ابنة العَمريِّ من خمر عينها

ووجنتها كأسا تميت وتُدنفُ

She gave him to drink from the wine of her eyes,

And her cheek was a cup that intoxicates and maddens.

فقال امزجيها بالرضاب لعلَّه

يسكِّنُ من سكر الهوى ويخفِّفُ

So he said, "Mix it with coolness, perhaps it

Will calm the intoxication of passion and lessen it."

فصدَّت ملياً ثم جادت بريقة

يزيد لها سكر المحب فيضعف

But she frowned for a while, then smiled a flash

That increased the intoxication of the lover and doubled it.

فراح بضعفَي سُكره من مزاجها

وقد تسأل العدل الولاة فتعسف

Thus he departed twice intoxicated by her mixture,

Though justice from rulers may be sought, but is difficult.

فهل من مزاج زاد في سكر شارب

سوى ريق ذات الخال أم لست تعرف

Is there any mixture that increases the intoxication of a drinker,

Other than the saliva of the one with the beauty mark? Or do you not know?
