1. أبَيْنَ ضُلوعي جَمْرةٌ تتوقَّدُ

    على ما مضى أَمْ حسرَةٌ تتجدَّدُ

    My ribs refuse to contain the burning embers

    Of longing for the past, or renewed regrets, my friend

  2. خليليَّ ما بعد الشَّبابِ رَزِيَّةٌ

    يُجَمُّ لها ماء الشؤون ويُعْتَدُ

    What comes after youth is misery

    To which the tears of sorrow flow abundantly

  3. فلا تَلْحَيَا إن فاض دمْعٌ لفقده

    فَقَلَّ له بحرٌ من الدمع يُثْمَدُ

    So don't blame me if tears flow at its loss

    For it has an abundant sea of tears stored up

  4. ولا تعجبا لِلْجَلْدِ يبكي فربّما

    تفطَّر عن عينٍ من الماء جَلْمدُ

    And don't be surprised if my skin weeps

    Rocks can be melted from the downpour of water

  5. شبابُ الفتى مجلودُه وعزاؤه

    فكيف وأنَّى بعده يتجلدُ

    The glory of a young man is his armor and solace

    So how can he be stoic after it's gone?

  6. وفَقْدُ الشَّبابِ الموتُ يوجد طعْمُهُ

    صُراحاً وطعمُ الموتِ بالموتِ يُفْقدُ

    The loss of youth is death in essence

    Its taste is clear while the taste of death is obscured in death

  7. رُزِئتٌ شبابي عَوْدةً بعد بَدْأةٍ

    وَهُنَّ الرزايا بادئاتٌ وعُوَّدُ

    My youth was taken abruptly after beginning

    And misfortunes tend to begin quickly then become habitual

  8. سُلِبتُ سوادَ العارضِيْن وقبلُهُ

    بياضَهما المحمودَ إذ أنا أمْردُ

    The blackness of my eyebrows and eyelashes was taken from me

    Along with their praised whiteness when I became ashen

  9. وبُدِّلْتُ من ذاك البياض وحسنِه

    بياضاً ذميماً لا يزال يُسَوَّدُ

    And I was transformed from that whiteness and beauty

    To a despised pallid whiteness that grows ever darker

  10. لَشتَّان ما بين البياضَيْن مُعْجِبٌ

    أنيق ومَشْنُوءٌ إلى العين أنكدُ

    What a contrast between the two whites! One elegant

    And the other unsightly to behold, more depressing

  11. تضاحك في أفنان رأسي ولحيتي

    وأقبحُ ضَحَّاكَيْن شَيْبٌ وأدْردُ

    In the meadows of my temples and beard they laugh

    Yet the two most ugly laughers are gray hair and baldness

  12. وكنتُ جِلاءً للعيون من القذى

    فقد جعلَتْ تقذَي بشيبي وتَرمَدُ

    I was polished to the eyes, removing their grit

    But now my gray hairs make them cloudy and bleary

  13. هي الأعين النُّجْل التي كنتَ تشتكي

    مواقِعَها في القلب والرأسُ أسودُ

    Those shining eyes whose glances you used to lament

    Piercing your heart and head with blackness

  14. فما لك تأسَى الآن لما رأيتها

    وقد جعلتْ مَرْمى سِوَاكَ تَعَمَّدُ

    Why do you now grieve seeing them

    When they intentionally glance away and avoid your gaze?

  15. تَشَكَّى إذا ما أقصدتْكَ سهامُها

    وتأسَى إذا نكَّبْنَ عنك وتَكْمدُ

    You used to complain when their arrows struck you

    And despair when they turned away from you in disdain

  16. كذلك تلك النَّبْلُ من وقعت به

    ومن صُرِفَت عنه من القوم مُقْصَدُ

    Such are those arrows - whoever they hit

    And whoever they avoid in the group is their intended target

  17. إذا عَدَلْت عنا وجدنا عُدُولها

    كموقعها في القلب بل هو أَجهدُ

    When they turn away from us we find their avoidance

    Like their blow to the heart - nay it is more potent

  18. تَنكَّبُ عنا مرة فكأنما

    مُنَكِّبُهَا عنا إلينا مُسَدِّدُ

    They turn away sometimes as if the one who deflects them

    Turns them away from us but directs them straight toward us

  19. كفى حَزَناً أن الشباب مُعَجَّلٌ

    قصيرُ الليالي والمَشِيبَ مخلَّدُ

    Enough sorrow that youth is fleeting

    With short nights while grayness is eternal

  20. إذا حَلَّ جَارَى المرء شأْوَ حياته

    إلى أن يضمَّ المرءَ والشيبَ مَلْحَدُ

    When the destiny of a man takes its course

    Until he and grayness are laid together in the grave

  21. أرى الدهرَ أجْرى ليله ونهاره

    بعدلٍ فلا هذا ولا ذاك سَرْمدُ

    I see the days and nights of fate

    Dealing evenly - neither this nor that is everlasting

  22. وجارَ على ليلِ الشباب فَضَامَهُ

    نهارُ مشيب سَرمدٌ ليس يَنْفَدُ

    And the night of youth was eclipsed

    By an eternal daybreak of grayness that will never end

  23. وعزاك عن ليل الشباب معاشرٌ

    فقالوا نهارُ الشيب أهدى وأرشدُ

    Some consoled me for the night of youth saying

    The daybreak of gray hair is wiser and more rightly guided

  24. وكان نهارُ المرء أهْدَى لسعيه

    ولكنَّ ظلَّ الليل أنْدَى وأبردُ

    A man's day was more rightly guided for his endeavors

    But the shadow of night was gentler and cooler

  25. أأيَّامَ لَهْوِي هل مَواضيكِ عُوَّدٌ

    وهل لشباب ضلَّ بالأمس مُنْشَدُ

    Where are the meadows of my revelry - are they accustomed

    To me, and can the one who yesterday strayed find his way back?

  26. أقول وقد شابتْ شَوَاتِي وَقَوَّسَتْ

    قناتي وأضْحَت كِدْنتي تَتَخدَّدُ

    I say this as my power fades and my bow flexes

    My arrows break and my quiver cracks and frays

  27. ودبَّ كَلالٌ في عظامي أدَبَّني

    جَنِيبَ العصا أَنأَدُّ أو أتَأيَّدُ

    Exhaustion has crept into my bones, teaching me

    To lean on a staff or take the arm of another

  28. وبُورِك طرفي فالشِّخَاصُ حياله

    قَرَائن من أدنى مدىً وَهْيَ فُرَّدُ

    My eyesight has dimmed so my peers appear

    Like faint shadows from afar that quickly fade

  29. ولَذَّتْ أحاديثي الرجالُ وأعرضتْ

    سُليمى وريَّا عن حديثي ومَهْدَدُ

    My talk has become pleasing to men but spurned

    By the likes of Sulayma and Rayya - they avoid and ignore it

  30. وبُدِّل إعجابُ الغواني تعجُّباً

    فهنَّ رَوانٍ يَعْتَبِرْن وصُدَّدُ

    The infatuation of maidens has turned to wonder

    For they are gazelles who observe and take heed

  31. لِمَا تُؤذن الدنيا به من صروفها

    يكون بكاءُ الطفل ساعةَ يُولَدُ

    Because of what the days herald in their changes

    A newborn's crying starts as soon as he enters the world

  32. وإلا فما يبكيه منها وإنها

    لأفْسَحُ ممَّا كان فيه وأرْغَدُ

    Otherwise why would he cry over it, though it is

    More spacious than what he came from and more plentiful?

  33. إذا أبصرَ الدنيا اسْتَهلَّ كأنه

    بما سوف يلقى من أذاها يُهَدَّدُ

    When he sees the world it's as if he is threatened

    By the harm it will inflict though it's yet unseen

  34. وللنفس أحْوال تظلُّ كأنها

    تشاهِد فيها كلَّ غيب سيُشهَدُ

    And the soul has states in which it's as if

    It sees all the unseen future scenes about to unfold

  35. رَزَحْتُ على مر الليالي وَكرِّهَا

    وهل عن فَنَاءٍ من فناءَيْن عُنْدَدُ

    I suffered the succession of nights and hated them

    But is there escape from the destruction of two destructions?

  36. مَحَارُ الفتى شيخوخة أو منيِّةٌ

    ومرجوعُ وهَّاج المصابيح رِمْدَدُ

    A young man's destiny is either old age or death

    And the return of the fading lamps is their extinguishing

  37. وقد اغتدِي للوحش والوحشُ هُجَّدٌ

    ولو نَذِرَتْ بي لم تبت وهي هُجَّدُ

    I have grown accustomed to loneliness but loneliness too

    Has become emboldened against me and unassailable

  38. فيشقَى بيَ الثورُ القَصِيُّ مكانُهُ

    بحيث يراعيه الأَصَلُّ الخَفَيْدَدُ

    And if I vow against it, it will not desist

    Rather it is boldness itself that makes the vows

  39. ترى كل ركَّاع على كلِّ مَرْتَعٍ

    يخرُّ لرمحي ساجداً بل يُسَجَّدُ

    So the young bull is uneasy in his pen

    Where the seasoned bull who herds him keeps watch

  40. إذا غازَلته بالصريم نِعَاجُه

    كما غازلتْ زِيراً أوانسُ خُرَّدُ

    I see every bowed head in the pastures

    Prostrate before my spear, nay, bowing in worship

  41. أمَرْتُ به رمحاً غيُوراً فخاضهُ

    ذَليقاً كما شَكَّ النَّقيلة مِسْرَدُ

    When I flirt with his ewes my spear, zealous

    And eager, plunges forth like the slick yarn of the spinner

  42. فَخَرَّ لَروْقَيْهِ صريعاً تخالُهُ

    يُعَصْفَر من تامُورِهِ أَو يُفَرْصَدُ

    So it drops dead by the flash of my blade

    Its collarbone yellow or clavicle crushed

  43. كأَن سِناني حين وافاه كَوْكَبٌ

    أصيب به قِطْعٌ من المُزْن أَقهدُ

    As if my spear were a star that struck

    A piece of piercing iron that maimed it

  44. وقد أشرب الكأس الغريضَ مِزاجُها

    على ما تغناه الغريضُ ومعبدُ

    When the deep bowl brims with well-mixed drink

    Whose flavor the deep bowl told and inspired

  45. يطوف بها لِلشَّرْب أبيضُ مُخْطَفٌ

    يجود له بالراح أسودُ أكْبَدُ

    A white handed cupbearer circulates it

    While a black handed one generously pours the draft

  46. بِموْلِيَّةٍ خضراء يُنْغَم وسْطَها

    ويُهْدَلُ في أرجَائها ويُهَدْهَدُ

    In a green meadow where song rings out

    Its borders swaying and rippling in the wind

  47. إذا شئْتُ راقتْ ناظريَّ نظائرٌ

    بمُصطبَحي والأدْمُ حولِيَ رُوَّدُ

    When I wish, gazelles glance at me coyly

    While the young lambs surround me, bleating gently

  48. وَصِيفٌ وإبريقٌ رذُومٌ ومُرشقٌ

    على شرف كلُّ الثلاثة أجْيَدُ

    Many a gazelle like them I romanced

    Lying with them briefly under their shade

  49. وأنجبُ ما ولَّدت منه مسرةً

    إذا ما بَنَاتُ الصَّدْر ظلت توَلَّدُ

    But time stripped away my dark hair

    And another took its place, grave deeds that kindle resentment

  50. حديثُ نتَاج من بني المزن أمُّهُ

    مُعَنَّسَةٌ مما تُعَتِّقُ صَرخَدُ

    So patience with what has become severe

    For only the firm will endure severity

  51. وبيضاءُ يخبو دُرُّها من بياضها

    ويذكو له ياقوتها والزبرجدُ

    Fate is like its child - it has mornings

    And evenings, sweet and bitter both given in turn

  52. لها سُنَّةٌ كالشمس تبرز تارةً

    وطوراً يواريها صَبيرٌ منضَّدُ

    I saw a tyrant whom we knew overstep

    His bounds but his command remained binding

  53. إذا ما التقى السُّكران سُكرا شبابها

    وأكوابِها كادت من اللين تُعقَدُ

    Arrogance led him on heedless that it would feed

    An annihilator, then he was discarded

  54. لهوتُ بها ليلاً قصيراً طويلُه

    وماليَ إلّا كفُّها مُتَوَسَّدُ

    Abu al-Abbas protected his people each day

    With a cloak of rectitude, despising scandal

  55. وكم مثلِها من ظبيةٍ قد تفيّأَتْ

    ظلالي وأغصانُ الشبيبة مُيَّدُ

    Defending them like a steadfast mountain

    Repelling faults and correcting misdeeds

  56. لعبتُ بأولى الدهر فاغْتَال شِرَّتي

    بأخرى حَقُودٍ والجرائمُ تُحْقَدُ

    The people became united under his care

    Though once fragmented - a shattered vessel

  57. فصبراً على ما اشْتَدَّ منه فإنَّمَا

    يقوم لما يشتد من يَتَشدَّدُ

    He sheltered them, spreading decency among them

    Forbidden vice and obliged to virtue

  58. وما الدهر إلا كابنه فيه بُكْرَةٌ

    وهاجِرَةٌ مسمومة الجو صَيْخدُ

    They became secure with abundant livelihood

    No longer preferring death's rest over the pleasure of life

  59. تذيق الفتى طوْرَي رخاء وشدة

    حوادثُه والحولُ بالحول يُطْرَدُ

    So the neglected were alerted and the aggressive laid to sleep

    Wrongs were righted, ruins rebuilt and order restored

  60. وعزَّى أناساً أن كل حديقةٍ

    وإن أغْدَقَتْ أفنانُها ستخضَّدُ

    When prosperity and safety coincided

    The jealous woke while the content fell asleep

  61. ومالي عزاء عن شبابي علمتُه

    سوى أنني من بعده لا أُخَلَّدُ

    If you compared their fortune to your deserts

    It would extinguish fires burning within and flare up

  62. وأن مَشِيبي واعدٌ بلَحَاقه

    وإنْ قال قوم إنه يَتَوَعَّدُ

    But the rival looks to what you've attained

    Though nobler and loftier, it angers and provokes him

  63. على أن في المأْمول من فضل صاعدٍ

    عزاءً جميلاً بل شباباً يُجدَّدُ

    He sees the brilliance of the world lifted toward you

    While scorning your worth - such enmity is hated

  64. ستظهر نُعْماه عليّ فأغتدِي

    وغصنُ شبابي ليّنُ المتنِ أغْيَدُ

    Yet sweeter than the necklace round the fawn's neck

    And fairer than her unadorned dress

  65. وتَصْطَادُ لي جدواه ما كنتُ صائداً

    بشرخ الشباب الغَضِّ بل هي أصْيدُ

    I thank you, as one ravaged by war thanks

    His shelter, though others took the blows

  66. وأفضلُ ما صِيدَتْ به العِينُ كالدُّمَى

    مُهُورٌ وأثْمَانٌ من العين تُنْقدُ

    Your swords defended my land when death's shadows

    Loomed, dispelling their darkness, dense and brooding

  67. وهل يستوي رامٍ مرامِيه لَحْظُهُ

    ورامٍ مراميه لُجَيْنٌ وعسْجَدُ

    Though you sheltered all people with your care

    I was singled out for a share I never disavow

  68. وما أملي في المَذْحجِيَّ بِمُنْتَهٍ

    ولكنَّه كالشيءِ بُلَّتْ بِهِ اليَدُ

    I was one who best returned good deeds

    Even if others were its intended target

  69. إلى أين بِي عن صَاعِدٍ وانْتِجَاعِهِ

    وقد رَادَهُ الروَّادُ قبلي فأَحْمَدُوا

    Should I now, having gained a portion be like one

    Specially entitled, uniquely privileged?

  70. وَلي بأبي عيسى إليه وسِيلَةٌ

    يُفَكُّ بها أصفادُ عانٍ ويُصْفَدُ

    Wholesale thanks is greater when thanks

    Are due - and more immersive when immersed

  71. ومَالي لا أغدو وَهَذَانِ مَعْمَدِي

    وَمَا لَهُمَا إلّا الْعَوَارِفَ مَعْمَدُ

    You are most deserving to shelter me

    In the valley of death's dark, gloomy shade

  72. لَعَمْرِي لئن أضحت وِزَارةُ صاعد

    تُثَنَّى لقد أضحى كريماً يُوحَّدُ

    You rescued me from its jaws after they

    Had snapped shut, strong and sharp

  73. وِزَارَتَهُ شَفْعٌ وذاك بحَقِّهِ

    كَمَا أنَّه وِتْرٌ إذا عُدَّ سُؤددُ

    And you are my thanks, for every soul who prays

    And everyone who bows down in worship

  74. هو الرجلُ المشْرُوك في جُلِّ مالِهِ

    ولكنَّه بالخيْرِ والحمْدِ مفردُ

    After war wore out its iron

    And unraveled its woven coats of mail

  75. يُقَرَّضُ إلا أنَّ ما قيلَ دُونه

    ويوصف إلا أنه لا يُحَدّدُ

    The blades all bent and broken

    Only Sa'id remained, for death itself dies from death

  76. أرقُّ من الماءِ الذي في حُسامه

    طِبَاعاً وأمضى منْ شَبَاهُ وأنجدُ

    Your choice of him was wise, drawing him near

    While others protested though they are more distant

  77. وأجْدَى وأنْدَى بطْنَ كَفٍّ من الحَيَا

    وآبى إباءً من صَفاةٍ وأجْمَدُ

    For like the pupil's dark center engulfed

    By the eye, his place with you is well established

  78. وأبْهَرُ نُوراً للعيون من الَّتي

    تُضَاهِيهِ في العلياء حين تَكَبَّدُ

    The eye and its lid that hides it can reconcile

    Though at first glance no go-between connects the two

  79. وأوْقَرُ من رَضْوَى ولو شاء نَسْفَهَا

    إذن لم يُلِقْها طَرْفَةَ العَيْن مَرْكَدُ

    Requesting him troubles you though he is best

    To fulfill the request quickly, his means more assured

  80. طويلُ التّأَنِّي لا العَجولُ ولا الذي

    إذا طرقتْه نَوْبةٌ يتبلَّدُ

    With him your fortunes turned victorious

    Vanquishing enemies, exalted and undeterred

  81. له سَوْرَةٌ مكْتَنَّةٌ في سَكِينَةٍ

    كما اكْتَنَّ في الغمْدِ الجُرازُ المهنَّدُ

    In warfare, now and then, his strategies prevail

    His favor upon you continues, increasing

  82. إذا شَامَهَا قَرَّتْ قُلُوبٌ مَقرَّهَا

    وإن سُلَّ منها فالْفَرائصُ تُرْعَدُ

    When absent his deputy appears

    Both scenes alike, neither outshines the other

  83. يُلاقي العِدَا والأولياءَ ابْنُ مَخْلَدٍ

    لقاءَ امْرىءٍ في اللّه يَرْضَى ويعْبَدُ

    Whoever flees, he fiercely pursues

    Fanning war's flames, a planet in combat

  84. بِجَهْلٍ كجهلِ السيفِ والسيفُ مُنْتَضىً

    وحلْمٍ كحلم السيف والسيفُ مُغْمَدُ

    Each attack makes their positions untenable

    His army growing as yours gains decisive wins

  85. وليسَ بِجَهْل الأغبياء ذوِي العَمَى

    ولكنَّه جَهْلٌ به اللَّهُ يُعْبَدُ

    Had you neither gained reinforcements nor killed them

    His killing of them would have quenched your vengeance

  86. عُرَامٌ زَعيمٌ بالهُدَى أوْ فَبِالرَّدَى

    إذا ما اعْتَدَى قوْمٌ عن القصْد عُنَّدُ

    But they transgressed until you prevailed

    Diminishing them as your own ranks swelled

  87. قِرىً مِنْ مليٍّ بالقِرى حِينَ يُبْتَغَى

    كِلاَ نُزُلَيْهِ اللَّذُّ والكُرْه مُحْمَدُ

    Wearing the sword of war at its draw

    More harmful to them than its slash or strike

  88. عَتيدٌ لَديْهِ الخَيرُ والشرُّ لامْرىءٍ

    بَغَى أوْ بَغَى خيراً ولَلْخَيْرُ أَعْتَدُ

    You cursed his lands leaving him only

    A wasteland, though once fertile and thriving

  89. صموتٌ بلا عيٍّ له من بلائه

    نَوَاطِقُ تَسْتدْعِي الرَّجَاءَ وتَزْأدُ

    You drove him back by cunning

    Separating his army though yours remained coherent

  90. كَفَى الوعْدَ والإِيعَادَ بالقوْلِ نَفْسَهُ

    بأفْعَالِهِ والفِعْل للفِعْل أشْهَدُ

    Had his forces not been diffuse

    You would have killed him, capturing his side

  91. إذا اقْتُفِرَتْ آثارُهُ فَعَدُوُّهُ

    وموْلاَهُ مَوْعُودٌ هُنَاك ومُوعَدُ

    Instead you besieged and weakened his power

    His provisions failed though he began well-prepared

  92. عزيزٌ غَدا فوْقَ التَّودُّدِ عِزُّهُ

    وإحْسَانُه في ظلِّه يَتَوَدَّدُ

    Leaving him alive though constrained

    Fettered, like a tethered beast to his den

  93. يَغُضُّ عن السؤَّالِ من طَرْفِ عَيْنه

    لِكَيْلاَ يَرَى الأحْرَارَ كيُفَ تُعَبَّدُ

    He walked on oceans almost unimpeded

    While earth barely sustained him, like a burden

  94. ويُطْرِقُ إطْراقَ الذَّليل وإنه

    هُنَاكَ لَسَامِي نَاظِرِ العيْنِ أصْيَدُ

    With a spear cast at his rock-solid chest

    It would become the rock's resting place, embedded

  95. إذا مَنَّ لم يَمْنُنْ بِمَنٍّ يَمُنُّه

    وقال لنفسي أيُّها الناسُ أمْهَدُ

    Crossing a sea, the waters nearly parted

    Setting foot on land, it nearly cracked and split

  96. وكل امْتِنَانٍ لا يُمَنُّ فإنه

    أخفُّ مناطاً في الرقاب وأوْكَدُ

    You did not warn but let him be, as if

    The sea's surface for him was solid ground

  97. تَجَاوَزَ أن يسْتأْنف المجدَ بالنَّدى

    وفي كل ما اسْتَرْفدتَهُ فهُوَ أجْودُ

    You misled him toward survival but he chose

    Annihilation - an evil destination!

  98. ومن لمْ يَزِدْ في مجده بذْلُ مالِهِ

    وجادَ به فَهْو الجَوَادُ المقلَّدُ

    You were still, demanding blood vengeance

    As a lion poised to pounce crouches

  99. ترى نَائلاً من نَائلٍ ثم ينتهي

    إلى صَاعِدٍ إسنادُه حين يُسْنَدُ

    And Abu al-Abbas, everywhere and always

    Wore the cloak of righteousness, pure and simple

  100. كأنَّ أباه يوم سمَّاهُ صاعداً

    رأى كيفَ يَرْقَى في المعالي ويَصْعدُ

    Defending the honorable, not selfish whim

    Shunning scandal, guided by principle

  101. جَرى وجرى الأكْفَاءُ شَأْواً ولم يزل

    مُنَازِعُهُ الطُّولى يُضَامُ ويُضْهَدُ

    He is the lion's cub, resembling its sire

    Nothing strange for cubs mimic their sires

  102. فَلَمَّا تناهَى من يُبَارِيه في العلا

    تَمادَى يُباري أمْسَهُ اليومُ والغدُ

    But without support in adversity, how excellent

    Was the son of Makhlad - your loyal counsel!

  103. جَوادٌ ثَنَى غَرْبَ الجِياد بغَرْبِه

    وظَلَّ يُجَاري ظلَّهُ وهو أوْحدُ

    He stood by you when iron assailed

    Enveloping you while plots unraveled

  104. وما أغْرَقَ المُدَّاحُ إلا غَلا بِهِ

    وراء مَغَالي مَدْحِهِمْ فيه مَخْلدُ

    All blades bend except his, undaunted by death

    A staunch ally, by the Almighty aided

  105. وأسْلافُ صِدق من عَرَانِين مَذْحجٍ

    طوَالُ المسَاعِي ليْس فيهِمْ مزنَّدُ

    When God showed you unveiled favor

    Fortune you sought appeared, set and established

  106. بَنَوْا مجدَه في هَضْبَةٍ مَذْحجيَّةٍ

    ذُؤَابَتُهَا بيْن الفَرَاقد فَرْقَدُ

    Dispelling your injuries and doubts

    Transforming wounds into triumphs, wide and flourishing

  107. أُولئكَ أوْعَالُ المعَالي مُسَهَّلٌ

    لهُمْ مُرْتَقىً في الوَعْر مِنْها ومَصعَدُ

    So the last of your enemies were removed

    Only remnants remained, scattered and finished

  108. ألم تَرَ زُلْفَى صاعد عند رَبِّه

    بلى قد رأى السَّاهي ومَنْ يَتَفَقَّدُ

    As if when their structures collapsed

    It was said: They quenched, then fouled their thirst

  109. بَدَتْ قِبلةُ الدنيا وللنُّكْر فوقَها

    ظِلالٌ وثَدْيُ العُرْف فيها مُجدَّدُ

    And you, Abu al-Abbas, protected Ahmad's nation

    A deed his cousin Ahmad will someday praise

  110. فَلَمَّا تولَّى الأمرَ نُكِّرَ مُنْكرٌ

    وعُرِّف معْرُوف وأُصْلِحَ مُفْسَدُ

    You stopped the unlawful bloodshed, setting right

    What was wrong, though the deviants raced ahead

  111. وأَصْبَح شَمْلُ الناسِ وهْوَ مؤلَّفٌ

    وعَهْدي بشمل الناس وهْو مُبَدَّدُ

    You secured the fearful nights so they can worship

    Bowing between prayer niches, fervently devoted

  112. حَمَاهُمْ وأفشى العُرْفَ فيهم فكُلُّهُمْ

    من الشرِّ مَمْنُوعٌ مِنَ الخير مُمْجَدُ

    Through you Islam was revived, strengthened

    Its light rekindled, the edifice rebuilt

  113. إذا أحْسَنُوا جُوزُوا جَزَاءً مُضَاعَفاً

    وما اقتَرَفُوا من سَيِّئٍ مُتَغَمَّدُ

    You slew the one who raped honorable women

    His bloody corpse now tossed in land and sea

  114. ولَمَّا الْتَقَى خِصْبُ المرَادِ وأمْنُهُ

    تَيَقَّظَ مَسْبُوتٌ ونام مُسَهَّدُ

    You killed the wicked gang in cold blood

    Though prostrating innocently, calling God's name

  115. فلمْ يَمتَنعْ مَرعىً على مُتعيِّشٍ

    ولم يَنْقَطِع شِرْبٌ ولم يَنْبُ مَرْقَدُ

    The treasonous Jews live safely under your protection

    While loyal believers suffer tyranny and pain!

  116. فأضحُوا وما في راحة الموت مَرْغَبٌ

    لحِيٍّ ولا في لذَّةِ العيْش مَزْهَدُ

    You besieged the Negro chief until his might buckled,

    His troops lost heart though their number seemed countless

  117. لِيَحْلُلْ ذَرَاه من تَلَدَّدَ حائراً

    فما في ذَرَاهُ حائرٌ يَتَلدَّدُ

    You kept him alive, unconquered yet confined

    Leashed though unfettered, his men may rally

  118. وَطَاغٍ عهدنا أمرَه وهْوَ حادثٌ

    جَليلٌ فأمْسَى أمْرُه وهو مَعْهَدُ

    His domain was dense with fighters

    Yet you kept terrorizing and tearing it apart

  119. تمادَتْ بِه الطَّغْوَى ولم يدْر أنَّه

    يُسَوِّغُ أكَّالاً له ثم يُزرَدُ

    Separating his men with cunning gambits

    As your ranks swelled and their assembly wavered

  120. فصادَف قَتَّالَ الطُّغاةِ بمَرصَدٍ

    قريب وهل يَخْلُو من اللّه مَرْصَدُ

    If you lacked reinforcements yet killed them off

    He would have mourned them, their loss is greater

  121. أُتيح له من ذي الغَنَاءَيْن صاعدٍ

    مِصَاع ومَكْرٌ أَعْجَميٌ مُوَلَّدُ

    But he transgressed so you gained victory

    Diminishing him as your own power proliferated

  122. فَعُجْمتُهُ كِتْمَانُهُ أينَ عَهْدُهُ

    وتَوْلِيدُهُ عِرْفَانُه أيْنَ يَعْمِدُ

    Absent from war, your imprint remains

    Your veterans ready, committed and dutiful

  123. رماهُ بِحَوْلٍ لا يُطاق وقُوَةٍ

    وَلِيٌّ بكلْتَا العدَّتَيْن مُؤَيَّدُ

    Like fate unseen yet its judgments visible

    Upon all mankind, unavoidable, unquestioned

  124. رأى صَيْدَه من أفْضل الصَّيْدِ كُلِّهِ

    على أنَّهُ مِنْ شرِّ ما يُتَصَيَّدُ

    When a sword appears, it heeds your vision

    Its blow guided by your focused wisdom

  125. فَبَثَّ له تِلْك الحَبائل حَازِمٌ

    من القوم كَيَّادٌ قَديماً مُكيَّدُ

    A youth - his spirit a pure illumination

    His essence a temple for that light embodied

  126. مُوَفَّقُ آراءٍ وزيرُ مُوَفَّقٍ

    يُعَضِّدُهُ والرُّكْنُ بالركن يُعْضَدُ

    Refined and purged of impurities

    A lofty apogee for minds seeking ascent

  127. إذا نَابَ عنه في الأمورِ رَأَيْتَه

    كِلا مَشْهَدَيْهِ لا يُدَانيهِ مشهدُ

    A wayfarer from worldly pursuits

    Who shuns its water, diluted and brackish

  128. عُطَارِدُهُ ما أخْبَتِ الحربُ نَارَها

    ومِرِّيخُهُ ما دَامَتِ الحربُ تَوقدُ

    Had it enticed him to partake of its valley's drink

    He would have tempered himself, restrained from excess

  129. يَصُولُ على أعدائه كلَّ صَوْلة

    يَضِيقُ لها مِنْهُمْ مَقَامٌ ومَقْعَدُ

    It professes love to attract him

    With its maidens who tend the abstemious

  130. فطوْراً بأَقْلاَمٍ تُجَرَّدُ لِلْحِبَا

    وطوراً بأسْيافٍ حِدَادٍ تُجَرَّدُ

    Yet he gains nothing save what builds his rewards

    Or the little that suffices his needs, no more

  131. إذا ما اجْتَبَى مَالاً فَمَالاً أحَالَهُ

    قِتَالاً وزِلْزَالاً لمن يَتَمَرَّدُ

    A man who rewards good by giving first

    And if good returns, his giving redoubles

  132. وإنِّي على رَغْمِ الأعادي لَقائلٌ

    وإن أبْرَقُوا لي بالوَعِيدِ وأرعَدُوا

    The hope of those who seek him

    Is as his promise, a covenant confirmed

  133. لِيَشكُرْ بَنُو الإسلام نعمةَ صاعدٍ

    بل النَّاسُ طُرّاً قَوْلَةً لا تُفَنَّدُ

    A youth - the lamps of his insight guide

    His overflowing favor is help at hand

  134. وإنْ تكفُروا فاللَّهُ شَاكرُ سَعْيه

    عَلَى الكَافِرِيهِ والنَّبيُّ محمدُ

    Each land's wise governor, every domain's noble keeper

    His judgments make clear, his pardons make whole

  135. لأطْفأ ناراً قد تعالى شُوَاظُهَا

    وأوْقَدَ نُوراً كاد لولاه يَخْمَدُ

    Yet the best of all is wisdom - fortune's sister

    Both to be sought, for in him they are found

  136. وَمَا مذْحجٌ إذْ كان منها بمَعْزِلٍ

    عن الحْمدِ مَا لَمْ يَجْحَدِ الحقَّ جُحَّدُ

    They saw him as infant and said he'd be

    A leader - ten complete virtues in one embodiment

  137. أَمَذْحجُ أحْسنْتِ النضالَ فأبشِري

    بِشُكرِكِ عند اللّه والقَرْضُ يُشْكَدُ

    This proved true in his ten-year reign

    His greatness ingrained, embedded since birth

  138. لئن نصر الأنْصارُ بَدْءاً نبيَّهمْ

    لقد عُدْتُم بالنصر والعودُ أحمدُ

    Glory and praise encircle him

    While countless renowned ones strive for mere crumbs

  139. وأنتُمْ وهُمْ فَرْعَانْ صِنْوَانِ تلتقي

    مَناسِبُكُمْ في مَنْصِبٍ لا يُزَهَّدُ

    He is pure, not owing his wealth to another

    While others display false airs to hide lowly roots

  140. يَمَانُونَ مَيْمُونو النَّقائِبِ فيكُمُ

    مُنَاصَحَةٌ صِرْفٌ لمن يَتَمَعْدَدُ

    No home thrives without a noble pillar

    Nor does a pillar stand without solid foundations

  141. تُدَبِّرُنَا منْكم نجومٌ ثَوَاقبٌ

    تَبَهْرَمُ في تدبيرها وتَعَطْرَدُ

    Brackish water, though pure atop

    Below is bitter and foul when tasted

  142. حُمَاةٌ وكُتَّابٌ تَسُوسُ أكُفُّكُم

    رماحاً وأقلاماً بها الملك يُعْمَدُ

    The rest is brine - harmful, vile

    Toxic when drunk, though thirst rages

  143. مُعرَّبَةٌ أقلامُكم نَبَتَتْ لكُمْ

    بحيث الْتَقَى طَلْحٌ وضَالٌ وغَرْقَدُ

    I used it to water tender shrubs

    After displacement made them wither

  144. لِذلك آخَتْها الرماحُ فأصبحتْ

    تَقَوَّمُ في أيْدِيكُمُ وتَأَوَّدُ

    Camels - when left to roam long distances

    Their slender bodies show their humps

  145. إذا ما سَلَكْتُمْ في الصُّدورِ صُدُورَهَا

    تَقَصَّدُ فيها عن دماءٍ تَفَصَّدُ

    Trustworthy with a far-off travelers dreams

    Though ifdishonest, their saddles slide askew

  146. فأهْوِنْ عليكم في المعالي ونَيْلِهَا

    هناكَ بما يَدْمَى ومَا يَتَقَصَّدُ

    Of those who grow more dear and gentle

    When polished by wandering in distant lands

  147. ولمْ تَسْلُكُوا فيما أتْيتُمْ مَضِلَّةً

    وكلنْ لكُم فيهِ طريقٌ مُعَبَّدُ

    As plaited palm fronds become strong

    Twisted tightly by plaiters' hands

  148. وَمَا نِلْتُمُ مانلتمُ أنْ جُدِدْتُمُ

    ولكن جَدَدْتُمْ والمُضِيعُونَ سُمَّدُ

    Force them and they become violent

    Like a mirage hiding vacant ruins

  149. أرى منْ تعاطَى ما بلغْتُم كَرَائمٍ

    مَنالَ الثريَّا وهو أكْمهُ مُقْعَدُ

    Stopping a shoe whose cobbler's stitch

    Leaks blood from one who has walked long years

  150. وَضِدٍّ لكم لا زَالَ يَسْفُلُ جَدُّهُ

    ولا بَرِحَتْ أنفَاسُه تَتَصَعّدُ

    I drove an obedient she-camel, then broke from her

    When her outpours went dry, though she had gushed

  151. يرى زِبْرِجَ الدنيا يرفُّ عليكُمُ

    ويُغْضِي عَن اسْتِحْقَاقِكُمْ فهْوَ يُفْأَدُ

    I wish to deliver to Abu 'Isa al-'Ala bin Sa'id

    A message - no need for other couriers

  152. وَلَوْ قَاسَ باسْتِيجَابِكُمْ ما مُنِحْتُمُ

    لأطْفَأ ناراً في حَشَاه تَوَقَّدُ

    To untie the knots binding this supplicant

    My sword and spear - the best go-betweens

  153. ولكنَّهُ يرنُو إلى مَالبِسْتُمُ

    وما تحتَه أسْنَى وأعْلى وأمْجَدُ

    By the life of he whose every virtue

    Surpasses all others, unparalleled

  154. وآنَقُ من عِقْد العقِيلةِ جيدُهَا

    وأحسنُ من سِرْبالِهَا المُتَجرّدُ

    If Sa'id's ministry gains you as partner

    It will be doubly blessed, with goodness unmarred

  155. شكرتُكُم شكر امْرِىءٍ ذي حُشَاشةٍ

    بِكُمْ أصبَحَتْ في جسمه تَتردّدُ

    Your partnership procures forgiveness

    Just as an even number is indivisible when halved

  156. أظلَّتْ سيوفُ الموت أهلَ بِلادِهِ

    فَكَشَّفْتُمُ أظْلالَها وَهْيَ رُكّدُ

    A aloof man who finds sufficiency in himself

    Needing no other, for God his sole intent

  157. وأنتُمْ وإن كنتُمْ عَمَمْتُمْ بمَنِّكُمْ

    فقد خَصَّنِي من ذاك ما لسْتُ أجحدُ

    He is described but cannot be bounded

    His giving surpasses what is told and transmitted

  158. وكنت امْرَءاً أوْفَى الصَّنِيعةَ شكْرَهَا

    وإنْ كان غيري بالصَّنِيعَةِ يُقصدُ

    Dearer than pure rainwater to the thirsty

    Closer to it, the distant ones are barred

  159. أُرَانِي إذا ما فُزْتُ منها بجانبٍ

    كأَنِّيَ مخْصُوصٌ بها مُتَوَحّدُ

    A man of piercing knowledge - when absent

    His deputy appears and both scenes shine equal

  160. ومن شَكَرَ النُّعمَى عُمُوماً فشْكرُهُ

    إذا هيَ خَصَّتْهُ أجَمُّ وأحشَدُ

    Whichever he chooses to attend to

    The other never falls short or dims

  161. وأَوْلَى امْرئٍ أنْ تَشمَلُوهُ بفضلكم

    نَقِيذُكُمُ والموتُ أسْودُ أربَدُ

    They consult, aiding each other

    Each pillar propped up by the other

  162. ومَنْ تُنقِذُوهُ تَضْمَنُوا ما يُعِيشُهُ

    وما تَغْرِسُوه لا يَزَلْ يُتعهّدُ

    When the sword hilt is gripped their pens ready

    Stirring to action, for the kingdom made upright

  163. وإنِّي لَمُهْدٍ للمُوَفَّقِ شكْرَهُ

    وشُكْرَكُمُ عنْ كلّ منْ يتشهَّدُ

    Your eloquent pens sprouted for you

    Where flowery speech, prose and verse meet

  164. فمن مُبْلِغٌ عنِّي الأميرَ الذي به

    رَسَا الأُسُّ وانْتَصَّ البناءُ المسنّدُ

    So the spears welcomed them, they became

    Guided by you - straying neither right nor left

  165. وعَرّى لَمَرْضَاة الإِله مَنَاصِلاً

    غِضَاباً عِضَاباً ليس فيهنَّ مُعضَدُ

    You walk the straightest path, shunning misguidance

    Each roadmade smooth, its rough patches smoothed

  166. أبا أحْمدٍ أبْلَيْتَ أمَّةَ أحْمدٍ

    بلاءً سَيَرْضَاهُ ابنُ عمِّك أحمدُ

    You attained what you did by renewing

    Not by gaining - the negligent still slumber!

  167. حَقَنْتَ دِمَاءَ العَقْرِ والعُقْرِ بعْدَمَا

    هُريقَتْ حَرَاماً والخَليُّون رُقّدُ

    I see one who mimics your lofty principles

    Reaching heights though blind and stumbling

  168. وأمَّنْتَ لَيْلَ الخائِفِين فَهَاجِدٌ

    وشَاكِرُ نُعْمَى قَائِمٌ يتَهجَّدُ

    While your rival remains lowly

    His breath still rising, never fading

  169. بكَ ارْتُجِعَ الإِسْلامُ بعدَ ذهابِهِ

    وعَادَ مَنَارُ الدِّينِ وهْوَ مُشيّدُ

    He eyes what you've attained jealously

    Deeming it unworthy, though loftier and nobler

  170. قَتَلْتَ الذي اسْتَحْيَا النساء وأصْبَحتْ

    وَئِيدَتُهُ في البَرَّ والبَحْرِ تُوأدُ

    Sweeter than the kiss of the fawn's neck

    Lovelier than her dress, simple and sheer

  171. وَقتَّلَ أجْذَالَ العِبَادَةِ عَنْوَةً

    وهُمْ رُكَّعٌ بَيْنَ السَّوَارِي وسُجَّدُ

    Abu 'Isa, make these paltry days submit

    For the finest garb frays while the worst endures

  172. يَنَالُ اليهودُ الفاسِقُونَ أَمَانهُ

    وَيَشْقَى به قَوْمٌ إلى اللّه هُوَّدُ

    Live a life secluded in your abode

    While the best homes are but moving residences

  173. حَصَرْتَ عميدَ الزَّنْج حتَّى تَخَاذَلَتْ

    قُواهُ وأَوْدَى زادُهُ المُتَزَوَّدُ

    In it is my tribute to those I mentioned

    My gaze toward you, more heartening than gifts

  174. فَظَلَّ ولمْ تَقْتُلْهُ يَلْفِظُ نَفْسَهُ

    وظلَّ ولم تأْسِرْهُ وهْوَ مُقَيَّدُ

    I came to you without provision

    Telling myself the mounts are saddled for you

  175. وَكَانَتْ نَوَاحيهِ كِثَافاً فلمْ تزل

    تَحَيّفُهَا سَحْتاً كَأَنَّكَ مِبْرَدُ

    Freed from hopes by the prospect of seeing you

    While hopes of others remain shackled

  176. تُفَرِّقُ عنْهُ بالمكائِدِ جُنْدَهُ

    وَتَزْدَادُهُمُ جُنْداً وجيْشُك مُحْصَدُ

    I have no intercessor but your generosity

    And no means to attain you but sincere praise

  177. ولو كُنْتَ لمْ تَزْدَدْهُمُ وَقَتَلْتَهُمْ

    لكَانَ لهُ في قَتْلهمْ مُتَبَرَّدُ

    Who can intercede on behalf of your petitioner

    Or provide provisions when you grant audience?

  178. ولكنْ بَغَى حتى نُصِرْتَ فلم تَكُنْ

    تُنَقِّصُهُ إلّا وأَنْتَ تَزَيَّدُ

    A man made prosperous by the hope of you

    Though given nothing, how excellent such fortune!

  179. وَلاَبِسُ سَيْفِ القِرْنِ عنْدَ اسْتِلابِهِ

    أضَرُّ لَهُ مِنْ كَاسِرِيهِ وَأَكْيَدُ

    Say these words of advice on my behalf

    To the Prince who mended the fracture

  180. نزلْتَ بِهِ تَأْبَى القِرَى غيْرَ نَفْسه

    وذَاكَ قِرىً مِنْ مِثْلِهِ لَكَ مُعْتَدُ

    Baring his blade though tolerance is difficult

    Anger intense - refusing to relent

  181. بِأرْعَنَ لَوْ يُرْمَى بِهِ عُرْضُ يَذْبُلٍ

    لأصْبَحَ مَرْسَى صَخْرِهِ وهْوَ جَدْجَدُ

    O father of Ahmad - you tested Ahmad's nation

    A trial his cousin Ahmad will someday acclaim!

  182. إذا اجْتَازَ بَحْراً كَادَ يُنْزَحُ مَاؤُهُ

    وإنْ ضَافَ بَرّاً كَادَتِ الأرْضُ تُجرَدُ

    You stopped the unlawful bloodshed, setting right

    What was wrong, though the deviants raced ahead

  183. فَمَا رُمْتَهُ حتى اسْتَقَلَّ برأْسِهِ

    مكانَ قَنَاةِ الظَّهْر أسْمَرُ أجْرَدُ

    You secured the fearful

  184. تَطِيرُ عَلَيْهِ لِحْيةٌ منه أصْبَحَتْ

    لهُ رايةٌ يَهْدِي بها الجَيْشَ مِطْرَدُ

  185. تَرَاهُ عُيُونُ الناظرين ودُونه

    حجابٌ وبابٌ من جَهنَّمَ مُؤْصَدُ

  186. يسيرُ لَهُ في الدُّهْم رأْسٌ مُعَطَّنٌ

    وجُثْمانُهُ بالْقَاعِ شِلْوٌ مُقَدَّدُ

  187. مَنَاكَ لَهُ مِقْدَارُهُ فكأنَّمَا

    تَقَوَّضَ ثَهْلاَنٌ عليه وَصِنْدَدُ

  188. ولَمْ تَأْلُ إنْذاراً لَهُ غَيْر أنه

    رَأى أنَّ متْنَ البحر صَرْحٌ مُمَرَّدُ

  189. حَدَوْتَ بِهِ نَحْوَ النَّجَاةِ كأنَّما

    مَحَجَّتُهُا البيْضَاءُ سَحْلٌ مُمَدَّدُ

  190. فلمَّا أبى إلا البَوَارَ شَلَلْتَهُ

    إلى النَّارِ بئسَ المورِدُ المُتورَّدُ

  191. سَكَنْتَ سكُوناً كان رَهْناً بِعَدْوَةٍ

    عَمَاسٍ كذاكَ اللَّيْثُ للوَثْب يَلْبَدُ

  192. وحَامَى أبُو العبّاسِ في كل مَوْطِنٍ

    على يَوْمِهِ ثَوْبٌ من الشرِّ مُجْسَدُ

  193. مُحَاماةَ مِقْدامٍ حَيُودٍ عن الهوى

    ولكنَّهُ عن جانِبِ العار أحْيَدُ

  194. وما شِبْلُ ذاكَ الْلَّيْث إلا شَبيهُهُ

    وغَيْرُ عجيبٍ أن تَرَى الشبل يأْسَدُ

  195. وما بِئْسَ عوْن المرْءِ كان ابنُ مَخْلدٍ

    نَصِيحُكَ والأعْدَاءُ نَحْوَكَ صُمَّدُ

  196. مَضَى لَكَ إذْ كَلَّ الحديدُ منَ الظُّبَا

    وحَاطَكَ إذْ رَثَّ النَّسيجُ المسَرَّدُ

  197. وَهَتْ كُلُّ دِرْعٍ فَانْثَنَى كُلُّ مُنْصُلٍ

    سِوَى صَاعِدٍ والموتُ للموت يَنْهَدُ

  198. فلا يَبْعد الرَّأيُ الذي اخْتَرْتَهُ بِهِ

    وقَرَّبْتَهُ بَلْ مَنْ أَبَى ذاكَ يَبْعدُ

  199. أمَا لَئن اسْتَبْطنتَهُ دُونَ مَنْ دَنَتْ

    إليْكَ به القُرْبى وَهَنْبَث حُسّدُ

  200. لَكَمْ دَاخِلٍ بينَ الخَصِيمَيْنِ مُصْلحٍ

    كما انْغَلَّ بيْن العيْنِ والجِفْنِ مرْوَدُ

  201. تَرَى العيْن والمَلْمُولَ يَبْطُنُ جَفْنَها

    إذَا ما غدا إنْسَانُها وهو أَرْمَدُ

  202. تَشَكَّى فلا يُجْدِي عَلَيْهَا لَصِيقُها

    فَتُدْني الذي يُجْدِي وقُرْبَاهُ أبْعَدُ

  203. وما زلْتَ مَفْتُوحاً عليك بِصَاعِدٍ

    تَفُوزُ وتَسْتعلي وتَحْظَى وتَسعَدُ

  204. بتَدْبيره طَوراً وطْوراً بيمْنه

    ومَا قادَهُ التَّدبيرُ فاليُمْنُ أقْوَدُ

  205. فَمنْ يُمْنِهِ إنْ غَابَ عَنْكَ مُدَيْدَةً

    فَنَالَكَ دُونَ الدِّرْعِ أزْرَقُ مُصْرَدُ

  206. فَلَمَّا أراكَ اللَّهُ غُرَّةَ وَجْهِهِ

    تراءى لكَ السَّعْدُ الذي كنْت تَعْهَدُ

  207. بَرأتَ بِهِ مِنْ كُلِّ ما أنْتَ ضَامنٌ

    وأنتَ لِشَرْوى تلْكَ منْهُ مُعَوّدُ

  208. وبُدِّلْتَ منْ قَرْحٍ بِفَتْح مُسَيَّرٍ

    بأمْثَاله غاظ الحسُودَ الْمَحَسَّدُ

  209. أَلاَ ذلكَ الفتْحُ المبين هَنَاؤه

    فَتَمَّ وَلاَقَاهُ يَزِيدٌ ومَزْيَدُ

  210. ومنْ يُمْنِهِ أن دُمِّرَ العَبْدُ وابْنُهُ

    وَمَلّاحُ قُنٍّ فالثَّلاثَةُ هُمَّدُ

  211. وأُتْبعَ أهْلُ الفِسْقِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائه

    فَوَافَاهُ والباقُونَ فَلٌّ مُشَرَّدُ

  212. كَأنِّي بهم قدْ قيل عند بَوارِهِم

    رَعَوْا ظِمْأَهُمْ حتَّى إذا تَمَّ أوْرَدُوا

  213. زُرُوعٌ سقاها اللّه رِيّاً فَأثْمرَتْ

    عُتِيّاً فأضْحَتْ وَهْيَ للنَّارِ تُحْصَدُ

  214. يَقُولُ مَقَالِي في نَصيحِك مَنْ مَشَى

    وَيقْدُمُهُمْ في ذَاكَ مَنْ يَتَبَغْدَدُ

  215. وما قيلَ فيه مِنْ مديح فإنه

    مديحُكَ والنِّيَّاتُ نَحْوَكَ عُمَّدُ

  216. إذا ما الأعادِي حاولَتْ كَيْدَ صَاعِدٍ

    غَدا يَتَعَالى والأعادِي تَوَهَّدُ

  217. وحارَبَ عَنْ نَعْمَائِهِ رَيْبَ دَهْره

    من البر والمعروف جُندٌ مُجنَّدُ

  218. وأهْلٌ لذاك المَذْحجِيُّ ابنُ مَخْلَدٍ

    مَعَ الخُلْدِ لَوْ أَنَّ ابنَ آدمَ مُخْلَدُ

  219. حَلَفْتُ بمنْ حَلّاهُ كلَّ فَضِيلة

    بأمْثَالِها سَادَ المَسُودَ المُسَوَّدُ

  220. لقدْ نَالَ مَنْهاةَ العَلاَءِ وإنَّه

    بأنَّ ابْنَهُ مِثْلَ العَلاءِ لأسْعَدُ

  221. ألاَ ذَلِكَ الفوْز الذي لا إخاله

    على غيره من سائر القوم يُحْشَدُ

  222. فتى الدِّين والدُّنْيَا الذي أذْعَنَا له

    ففي خِنْصَرٍ منْهُ لِصَعْبَيْنِ مِقْودُ

  223. هُو التَّاجُ والإِكْلِيلُ في كلِّ مَحْفِلٍ

    بل السَّيْفُ سيْفُ الدولة المُتَقَلّدُ

  224. يَزِينُ ويَحْمِي وَهْوَ في السِّلْم زينةٌ

    لمن يَرْتَدِيه وهو في الحرب مِزودُ

  225. وليْسَ بأنْ يَلْقَى ولكِنْ بأنْ يَرَى

    بآرائه اللَّاقُون والهامُ تُجْلَدُ

  226. تراهُ عن الحرب العَوَان بِمَعزلٍ

    وآثارُهُ فيها وإنْ غابَ شُهَّدُ

  227. كما احْتَجَبَ المِقْدارُ والحُكْمُ حُكْمُهُ

    على الناس طُرّاً ليس عنه مُعَرَّدُ

  228. إذا ما نَبَا سَيْفٌ فلاَحَظَ رأْيَهُ

    فَمَوْقِعُهُ مِمَّنْ تَوَخَّى مُمَهَّدُ

  229. فتىً رُوحُهُ ضوْءٌ بَسِيطٌ كيَانُهُ

    ومَسْكَنُ تلكَ الرُّوح نُورٌ مٌجَسَّدٌ

  230. صَفَا ونَفَى عنه القَذَى فكأنَّهُ

    إذا ما اسْتَشَفَّتْهُ العُقُولُ مُصَعَّدُ

  231. فتىً هَاجَر الدُنْيَا وحرَّمَ رِيقَهَا

    وَهَلْ رِيقُها إلا الرَّحيقُ الموَرَّدُ

  232. وَلَوْ طَعِمَتْ في عطْفِه وَوِصَالِهِ

    أبَاحَتْهُ منْها مَرْشفاً لا يُصَرَّدُ

  233. أبَاهَا وقد عَنَّتْ له من بَنَاتِهَا

    كَوَاعِبُ يُصْبينَ الحلِيمَ ونُهَّدُ

  234. فَمَا حَظُّهُ ممَّا حَوَتْ غير أنه

    يُؤَثِّلُ فيها الأجْر أو يَتَحمَّدُ

  235. فتىً يَبْدَأُ العَافِينَ بالبَذْلِ مُعْفِياً

    فإنْ عَادَ عَافٍ فهْوَ بالبذْلِ أعْودُ

  236. رَجَاءُ مُرَجِّيهِ لَدَيْهِ كَوَعْدِهِ

    ومَوْعِدُهُ إيَّاهُ عهْدٌ مُؤكَّدُ

  237. فَتىً لا هُدىً إلّا مصابِيحُ رَأْيِهِ

    ولاَ غوْثَ إلا فَضْلُهُ المُتَعَوَّدُ

  238. حَكِيمُ أقاليمِ البلادِ كَريمُها

    مُسِائلُهُ يُهْدَى وعَافِيهِ يُرْفَدُ

  239. وأحْسَنُ شيءٍ حكمةٌ أخْتُ نِعْمَةٍ

    وكِلْتاهُما تُبْغَى لديْهْ فَتُوجَدُ

  240. رَآهُ رَضِيعاً كلُّ مَاضِي بَصِيرَةٍ

    فقالُوا جميعاً قُنَّةٌ ستُطوَّدُ

  241. فَصَدَّقهُمْ مِنْهُ لَعَشْرٍ كَوَامِلٍ

    خَلَوْنَ لَهُ طَوْدٌ بِهِ الأرضُ تُوتَدُ

  242. غدا المجْدُ والتَّمجِيدُ يكْتَنِفَانِهِ

    جميعاً وكم من ماجدٍ لا يُمَجَّدُ

  243. أخُو حَسَبٍ ما عدَّهُ قَطُّ فَاخِراً

    على أنه في كلِّ حَيٍّ مُعَدَّدُ

  244. فَمُطَّرِفٌ مِمَّا تَكَسَّبَ مُحْدَثٌ

    وآخَرُ قُدْمُوسٌ على الدَّهْر مُلْتَدُ

  245. وَلا خَيْرَ في البُنْيانِ غيْرَ مُشَرَّفٍ

    ولا خيْرَ في تشْرِيفِهِ أوْ يُوَطَّدُ

  246. ومَاءٍ كفَقْدِ الماءِِ أعْلاَهُ عَرْمَضٌ

    وأسْفَلُهُ لِلمُستَمِيحينَ حَرْمَدُ

  247. وسائرُهُ مِلْحٌ أُجَاجٌ مُرَنَّقٌ

    خَبيثٌ كَريهٌ وِرْدُهُ حِينَ يُوَرَدُ

  248. سَقَيْتُ به خُوصاً حَرَاجِيحَ بعْدَمَا

    سقَى مَاءها التَّهْجِير خِمْسٌ عَمَرَّدُ

  249. مَرَاسِيلُ ما فيهنَّ إلا نَجِيبَةٌ

    مَطُولٌ إذا مَاطَلْتَها السَّيْرَ جَلْعَدُ

  250. أمُونٌ على الحَاج البعيد مَرَامُهُ

    وإن خان مَتْنَيْها السَّديفُ المُسَرهَدُ

  251. مِنَ اللائي تَزْدادُ انْدماجاً ومُنَّةً

    إذا هِيَ أنْضَاها السِّفَارُ العَطوَّدُ

  252. كَمَا جُدِّلَتْ فاسْتَحْكَمَتْ عنْدَ جَدْلِها

    مرائرُ في أيْدِي المُمرِّين تُمسَدُ

  253. إذا اسْتُكْرهَتْ فهْيَ الصُّوَارُ وَرَاءهُ

    مَكَاسِيبُ أمثالُ اليعاسِيبِ تُوسَدُ

  254. وَقُفٍّ يَرُدُّ الخُفَّ يَدْمَى فَمَرْوُهُ

    بِمَا عُلَّ مِنْ تِلْكَ الدِّماءِ مُجَسَّدُ

  255. عَسَفْتُ ودَوٍّ كالسَّماءِ قَطَعْتُهُ

    إذا انْجَابَ منْهُ فَدْفَدٌ عَنَّ فدْفَدُ

  256. لألْقَى أبا عِيسى العلاء بنَ صَاعِدٍ

    أَجَلَّ فتىً يُسْمَى إليه ويُوفَدُ

  257. فَيَعذبُ لي مِلْحٌ من العيْشِ آسِنٌ

    ويَسْهُلُ لي وعْرٌ من الدهر قَرْدَدٌ

  258. بني مخَلدٍ أهْلاً بأيَّامِ دَهْركُمْ

    وَبُعْداً لمن يَشْجَى بها وهو مُبْعَدُ

  259. شَكَى طُولَهَا مُسْتَثْقلُو العُرفِ إذْ غَدَتْ

    وفي كُلِّها للعرف عِيدٌ مُعَيَّدُ

  260. بِكُمْ عَمَرَتْ أوْطَانُ كُلِّ مُرُوءةٍ

    وقد جَعَلت تلك المغاني تَأبَّدُ

  261. لَكُمْ كلُّ فيَّاضٍ يَبيْتُ لِنَارِهِ

    مُنادٍ يُنادِي الحائرين ألا اهْتَدُوا

  262. إذا ما شَتَا كادتْ أنامِلُ كَفِّهِ

    تذوبُ سَمَاحاً والأنامِلُ جُمَّدُ

  263. ومنكم أبُو عيسى الذي بَاكَرَ العُلا

    ولم يُلْهِهِ عَيْشٌ رَفِيهٌ ولا دَدُ

  264. على بَحْرِهِ يُرْوَى الظِّمَاءُ ونَحْوَهُ

    يشيرُ إذا ما غُصَّ بالماء مَزْرَدُ

  265. ألا تلكُمُ النُّعْمَى التي ليس شكرُها

    سوى مِنَنٍ أضحت لكم تُتَقَلَّدُ

  266. وحَاكَةُ شِعْرٍ أحسنوا المدح فيكُمُ

    بما امْتَثَلُوا ممَّا فعلتُمْ وجوَّدُوا

  267. فباعوه منكم بالرغائب نافقاً

    لديكم هنيئاً نَقْدكُمْ لا يُنكَّدُ

  268. ولَولا مسَاعِيكم وجُودُ أَكُفِّكُمْ

    إذا ما أجادُوا أَوْ أَجَادُوا وأكْسَدُوا

  269. فلا تَحْمَدُوا مُدَّاحَكُمْ إن تغَلْغَلوا

    إلى مَمْدَحٍ فيكم بل اللّه فاحْمَدُوا

  270. كرمْتُمْ فَجَاشَ المعْجِمُون بمدحكم

    إذا رجَزُوا فيكم أَثَبْتُمْ فَقَصَّدُوا

  271. كما أزْهَرَت جنَّات عدنٍ وأثمرتْ

    فأضْحت وعُجْمُ الطير فيها تُغَرِّدُ

  272. أذِلْهَا أبا عيسى لَبُوساً فإنها

    سَتبقى ويَبْلى الأتْحَمِيُّ المعَضَّدُ

  273. وعِشْ عيْش مَحْبُورٍ بدار إقامة

    وأمثالُهَا سَيَّارةٌ فيك شُرَّدُ

  274. وفيها لمن قدَّمْتُ ذكراه مَلْبَسٌ

    تظلُّ به والطَّرفُ نَحْوك أقْوَدُ

  275. وكلُّ مديحٍ في امرِئٍ فهو في ابنِهِ

    وإن كان موسُوماً به حينَ يُنْشَدُ

  276. إليكَ بلا زادٍ رحلتُ مؤمِّلاً

    وقلتُ لنفسي والركائب وُخَّدُ

  277. عُتِقْتِ من الأطْمَاع يوم لقائه

    ورِقُّ ذوي الأطماع رقٌّ مُؤَبَّدُ

  278. وما شافِعي إلا سَماحُك وحدَه

    ولا وُصْلَتي إلا المديحُ المجوَّدُ

  279. ومن ذا الذي يعْفُو نداك بشافِعٍ

    ويصحبُهُ عند انْتِجاعِكَ مِزْوَدُ

  280. وإنَّ امرءاً أضحى رجاؤك زادَه

    وإنْ لم يُزَوَّدْ غَيْرَهُ لمُزَوَّدُ
