1. دعْ لباكٍ رسومَه وطلولَهْ

    ولحادٍ ركابه وحُمولَهْ

    Let the weepers weep as they please,

    And the mounted continue their journey afoot,

  2. ولغاوٍ سفاهَهُ وصِباهُ

    وللاهٍ سماعهُ وشَمُولهْ

    And the foolish persist in their folly,

    And the heedless continue heedless.

  3. وإذا ما صمدْتَ للشعرِ يوماً

    فتيمّمْ فصوله لا فضولهْ

    But if you devote yourself to poetry one day,

    Select its fruits, not the chaff.

  4. إنما أحمدُ المحمَّدُ شخصٌ

    من سماحٍ ونجدةٍ مجبولهْ

    Truly, Ahmad is a noble soul,

    Generous and ever ready to help.

  5. فارسُ المجدِ لم يزلْ غيرَ نُكرٍ

    يركبُ المجدَ صعبهُ وذلولَهْ

    The horseman of glory was never obscure;

    He rode glory’s steed both rough and smooth.

  6. فلِسؤّالهِ إذا ما استماحو

    هُ عطاءً سُيوبُه المبذولهْ

    His gifts would flow if he was asked for help,

    And his sword was ready if enemies schemed.

  7. ولأعدائهِ إذا ما أرادو

    هُ بكيدٍ سيوفُه المسلولهْ

    Glory has preoccupied his heart and hands,

    While the rhymes are busy praising him.

  8. شغَلَ المجدُ قلبه ويديه

    والقوافي بمدحهِ مشغولهْ

    Motives both facilitated and complicated him,

    Mingled with defect but also great virtues.

  9. سهَّلَتْهُ ووعَّرتْهُ سجايا

    خالطتْها وعورةٌ وسُهولهْ

    We never found them blameworthy,

    Though often obscure and neglected.

  10. لم نجدها مذمومةً قطُّ في النا

    سِ ولكن محمودةٌ معذولهْ

    He continued as a stranger, led astray

    When nobles acted foolishly.

  11. لم يزلْ غُرّةً يتيهُ بها الده

    رُ إذا ما الكرام كانوا حُجولهْ

    O noble Sir, whose hands never refrain

    From aiding us, but remain outstretched.

  12. أيها السيدُ الذي ليس تنفكْ

    كُ أياديه عندنا موصولهْ

    Known to us, though obscure and unknown to him,

    Blessings shine from him, clearly etched.

  13. فهي معروفةٌ لدينا وإن كا

    نتْ لديه مجحودةً مجهولهْ

    God and the angels have borne witness—

    An accepted and confirmed testimony—

  14. نِعَمٌ في الوجوه يَقرؤُها النا

    سُ جميعاً منقوطةً مشكولهْ

    That you are the ruler endowed with wisdom,

    Who was granted authority and leadership.

  15. شهدَ الله والملائكة الأب

    رارُ طُرّاً شهادةً مقبولهْ

    Your views have captured the essence of truth.

    What great schemes have been born from them!

  16. أنك الحاكم الذي أوتي الحك

    مُ به حكمه فأُعطِيَ سُولهْ

    Baghdad has worn the crown of your pride,

    And the clothes of your splendor, polished and refined.

  17. وأصابتْ آراؤه مَفْصِلَ الحَقْ

    قِ فكم خُطّةٍ به مفصولهْ

    May God make your rule enduring,

    So every calamity after it will fade away.

  18. لبستْ تاجَ فخرِها بك بغدا

    دُ وأثوابَ زينِها المصقولهْ

    The subjects are safeguarded by its protection,

    And the grazing lands are open and flowing with bounty.

  19. ثبَّتَ اللَّهُ دولةً لك أضْحت

    كلُّ بلوى بَعدلها معدولهْ

    The blood there will remain protected,

    And the livelihood of its people assured.

  20. فالرعايا محميَّة في حماها

    والمراعي مطلولةٌ مَوْبولهْ

    Please forgive me for prolonging overly,

    Yet praise cannot do justice to your glory.

  21. ما تزالُ الدماءُ مضمونةً في

    ها وأرزاقُ أهلِها مكفولهْ

    My spirit finds peace every day

    In the dwelling whose comfort I cherish.

  22. عاقني أن أطيلَ أنك تستغ

    رقُ عرضَ الثناء مجداً وطولهْ

    There God has granted me well-being,

    And undone the knots of affliction that bind me,

  23. وارتياعي في كلّ يومٍ من الإز

    عاجِ عن منزلٍ أُحِبُّ نزولهْ

    After exertion which has tested me sorely,

    Though its burdens cannot compare.

  24. فيه عافاني الإلهُ من الشك

    وِ وفكَّ البلاء عنّي كُبُولهْ

    And illness which has wasted my soul,

    Spread in my body its ache and frailty.

  25. بعدَ جهدٍ حملتُ منه ضروباً

    ليس أثقالهنّ بالمحمولهْ

    Oh, would that my soul had been taken

    Before it by death or its envoy!

  26. ومُصابٍ بشقةِ الروحِ مني

    ضمَّنَ الجسم سُقْمَه ونحولهْ

    My lord, my aid, my companion and vizier—

    Fate has tested me harshly since I lost him.

  27. بأخي بل بوالدي بل بنفسي

    ليتَ نفسي من قبله مثكولهْ

    He left me naught but a heart rending in two,

    As death marched forth with its steed and soldiers.

  28. رابني صائني ظهيري وزيري

    غالني الدهر فيه لُقِّيَ غولهْ

    To you I bring my laments, for sorrows

    That harass my mind, though reasonable.

  29. لم أرِثه سوى شجاةٍ أرتْني

    عسكرَ الموت رَجْله وخيولهْ

    Some of them: a party of yours have pained

    My heart, and it aches from their arrows.

  30. وإليك الشكاةُ منها ومن أش

    ياءَ تبتزُّ ذا الحجى معقولَهْ

    Sleep brings me no comfort, only sorrow,

    My regrets therein beyond consolation.

  31. بعضُها أن عَزمةً منك أقْذَتْ

    مُقلتي فهي بالقذى مكحولهْ

    Daily you send fears to startle me,

    Approaching where I had thought myself secure.

  32. لا تذوقُ المنامَ إلا غِراراً

    حسرتي فيه غيرُ ما معسولهْ

    By God I seek refuge, by rights owed me,

    By your kindness which I hope you’ll uphold.

  33. كلَّ يومٍ تزورني منك رَوعا

    تٌ على مَأْمنِ الحشا مدلولهْ

    Do not return me to the darkness of grief

    And the morals of those vile and disgraceful.

  34. أنا باللَّهِ عائذٌ وبحِقْوي

    كَ وآلاءِ كفَّك المسئولهْ

    Especially in your inviolable month,

    Forbidden by God from all wrong and evil.

  35. لا تردَّنَّني إلى ظُلَمِ الكر

    خِ وأخلاقِ أهلهِ المرذولهْ

    It befits the guardian of his subjects

    That no defect taints what he rules.

  36. سيَّما في حريمِ شهرك ذي الحر

    مةِ غيرِ المذالةِ المخذولهْ

    By my life, you are he, whose virtues

    Were never concealed or withheld.

  37. حَرَمُ اللَّهِ حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ ذو العر

    شِ على الظلمِ والعداءِ دخُولَهْ

    If they seek blood, it is not freely spilled,

    And gifts flow freely from their open hands.

  38. وحقيقٌ بِرعيهِ من غدا في

    هِ وما فيه خلةٌ مفضولهْ

    You will find in them no ungracious requests,

    Nor appointment accepted and then refused.

  39. ولعمري لأنتَ ذاك وما أن

    شر عنك المحاسنَ المنحولهْ

    Do not oppose the hopes that sustain my life,

    Lest tomorrow you unleash your floods.

  40. لم تزلْ من فعالكَ البدأةُ الحر

    رةُ بُشْرى بعودةٍ مأمولهْ

    While the soul hopes your rule will grant it

    A home prosperous and bustling with people,

  41. فاحتَسِبْ فيه تركَ إزعاجِ مثلي

    بعضَ أعمالِ بِرِّك المعمولهْ

    And anticipates your fulfillment of promises,

    Long-awaited prizes you will liberate.

  42. يا ابنَ أنصارِ دولةِ الحقِ بالنِّيْ

    يَة ذاتِ الصفَاءِ لا المدخولهْ

    When the messenger came with your decree

    Resembling death itself or its deliverer,

  43. والذي برّزوا سماحاً وبأساً

    فأحاديثُ مجدهِم منقولهْ

    Expelling it forcefully from a place

    Where contentment flourished in my dwelling,

  44. لا تُطلُّ الدماءُ إن طلبوها

    وعطايا أكُفّهم مطلولهْ

    Alas my soul! What hope remains for one who sought you?

    Can it be you have slain it with your sword?

  45. ليسَ فيهم مطالبُ الناسِ بالشك

    رِ ولا فيهمُ المُسمَّى قبولهْ

    God forbid! It sees in you the rising

    Of its star, not the setting sun.

  46. لا تكن عارضاً رجوتُ حياهُ

    فغدا مُرسِلاً عليّ سيولهْ

    It is not the way of the hoped-for prince

    To oppress one hoping he would assist him.

  47. بينما النفسُ في بهائِك ترجو

    ملكَ دارٍ معمورةٍ مأهولهْ

    If your right hand does not protect me,

    I will surely be devoured, no doubt.

  48. وتُراعى آمالها منك إنجا

    زَ مواعيدَ للمنى ممطولهْ

    So let the hand of the prince connect me

    With ties that will protect me from those knots.

  49. إذ أتاني الرسولُ منك بأمرٍ

    يشبهُ الموتَ نفسَه أو رسولهْ

    How often have you, by your help, enabled it

    To escape the claws of fate bared against it!

  50. وهْو إزعاجُها بأعنفِ عُنفٍ

    عن محلٍّ قد استطابتْ حلولهْ

    How often has your effort brought about

    What my soul aspired to attain!

  51. ويحَ نفسي وما لراجيك ويحٌ

    أتُراها بسيفها مقتولهْ

  52. حاشَ للَّه إنها لتريني

    بك إشراقَ نجمِها لا أفولهْ

  53. ليسَ من عادةِ الأميرِ المُرَجَّى

    أن يغولَ امرءاً رجا أن يعولهْ

  54. أنا إنْ لم تذدْ يميناك عني

    غيرُ شكٍّ فريسةٌ مأكولهْ

  55. فليصلْ كفي الأميرُ بحبلٍ

    عاصمٍ من حباله المجدولهْ

  56. كم وكم قدّرت بدفعك عنها

    ردَّ أظفارِ دهرِها مفْلولهْ

  57. كم وكم قدرت بسعيك فيما

    ترتجيهِ من الأمور حصُولهْ
