1. قد عُجِّلت لي عقوبة الخورِ

    وأنت فاحذرْ عقوبة البطرِ

    My punishment came early

    Beware of the anguish of loss

  2. خِرْتُ فأملتُ ما لديك فعو

    قِبْتُ بفوتِ النجاح والظفرِ

    I failed and lost what I hoped for

    I reaped the loss of success and victory

  3. وأنت أيضاً بطرت إذ وردت

    عليك دنيا وشيكة الصَّدرِ

    You too experienced loss when

    The fleeting world turned away

  4. فاصبر ستُجزَى بما بطرتَ من ال

    سُوء كما قد جُزيتُ بالخور

    So be patient, you will be rewarded

    For your loss as I was for my failure

  5. ما آمنتْ نفسُ من رجاك بما

    أنزل ربُّ السماءِ في السور

    No soul who hopes in you believes

    What the Lord of the heavens revealed in the Quran

  6. هل كان راجٍ يراكَ عِصمتَهُ

    لولا اتهام القضاءِ والقدر

    Would one who hopes in you be protected

    Were it not for the accusation of fate and destiny?

  7. أسلمتني من يديك في يديَ ال

    لَهِ وحَسْبي به من البشر

    I left myself in your hands trusting God

    He suffices me against all of mankind

  8. قِدماً كفاني وما عرفتك في

    بدوٍ من الأرض لا ولا حضر

    My feet were enough for me, I did not know you

    In the barren and settled lands

  9. رزقي لستَ الذي تُسبِّبهُ

    مسبِّبُ الرزقِ مُنشئُ الصُّور

    My provision is not caused by you

    The Provider, Creator of forms, provides

  10. فاركبْ طريقاً أراك راكبَهُ

    يُفضى بركبانه إلى الغِيرِ

    So take a path that leads its rider

    To end up in ruin

  11. نُعماك عندي التي أقرُّ بها

    أنك أصبحت لي من العبر

    Your blessings to me which I admit

    Are that you have become a lesson for me

  12. أصبحت لي عِبرة رأيت بها

    رشدي وقد كنت زائغ البصرِ

    You have become an example by which I saw

    My guidance though I was blind

  13. وشكر تلك اليد الدنيئة إع

    فائيكَ مني يا تافه الخطر

    Thank that vile hand that spared me

    From you, O trivial danger

  14. بل ذاك حظي فلست أحسبُهُ

    عليك شكراً يا شرّ مختبرِ

    Rather that was my fortune and I do not consider it

    Gratitude to you, O worst of foes

  15. والذم شُكرِيك إذ رأيتك ته

    وى الذمّ فاصبر لشرّ منتظَر

    My blame is thanking you, for I saw you

    Yearn for blame, so be patient for the worst awaits you

  16. وحبُّك الذمَّ لائق بك ما

    أشبه خَطْم الخنزير بالقذر

    Your love of blame suits you, resembling

    The snout of a pig wallowing in filth

  17. أنت الوزير الذي وزارتُهُ

    معدودةٌ في الكبائر الكُبَر

    You are the minister whom I served

    Among the greatest of major sins

  18. فاذهبْ عليك العفاءُ من رجل

    لا بل عليك الدَّبار في سَقر

    Go, may you be covered in dust, by a man

    No, may you suffer infernal heat

  19. آخر جهلي بك الغداةَ عِتا

    بيك وما للعقابِ والحجرِ

    The last of my ignorance of you was regretting

    You, though punishment and warning have no use

  20. لا جهلَ لي بعده وكيف وقد

    كَيَّسني ما وُهبتُ من حذر

    I have no ignorance after it, how could I when

    What I was granted of caution bagged me

  21. لهفي لآصالي التي اتصلت

    في غير شيء لديك بالبُكر

    I crave my hopes which were tied

    To nothing with you in the first place

  22. كدرتَ قبل استقاء آملك ال

    خائب قبحاً للوجه والخبر

    You ruined before drawing my hopes

    Damned be the face and news

  23. ولو أثارتك دلوهُ رجعتْ

    إليه مملوءةً من المدر

    Had your bucket raised it, it would have

    Returned to you full of filth

  24. وكيف يصفو الذي أثار به

    من كُدِّرت عينه ولم يُثَر

    How can what stirred up turbidity clear?

    Whose eye was dirtied but not stirred up

  25. أبديتُ في أُوليات لؤمك ما

    قدرتُ في أخرياته الأخرِ

    I showed at the start of your villainy

    What I could at its end

  26. هلّا بدا الصفو منك ثم بدا

    رنْقُك مِثل الطِلاءِ والسَّكر

    If only purity showed first then your vileness

    Like a coating and sugar

  27. أو كُدِّرَ البدءُ ثم أعْقبه

    صفوٌ ففي ذاك وجه معتذَر

    Or the beginning was turbid then followed

    By purity, that would be excusable

  28. بل كنتَ كالأسودِ الغليظ أخي ال

    نَتْن لمن شمَّه وذي الوضَر

    Rather, you were like the thick black snake

    Loathsome to the smeller, diseased and filthy

  29. كالقَطِران الذي يُرى أبداً

    في رأسهِ ما اقتنى من العكر

    Like tar which always shows atop it

    What it amassed of foulness

  30. وذاك يصفو لدى إماطةِ أع

    لاهُ وما إن تزال ذا كدر

    That clears when its top is removed

    Though it remains turbid

  31. أصبحتَ حزت النقيصتين معاً

    تقصيرَ سعيٍ ضَوى إلى قِصَر

    You combined both flaws, the regret

    Of failed efforts leading to failure

  32. دِنتَ بدينٍ من النذالة أد

    دتْكَ إليه لطافةُ النظر

    You were indebted with debasement that

    Your gentle gaze led you to

  33. يا لك من حكمةٍ ملعَّنةٍ

    أمرِّ ما أثمرتْ من الثمرِ

    What wisdom you have, ripe

    With bitterest fruits from its trees

  34. وكيف يحلو جنىً مَطاعِمُهُ

    منك بعودٍ من أخبث الشجر

    How can the harvest of one whose foods

    Are stocks from the evilest trees be sweet?

  35. فكَّرْ أبا البنت هل تُؤثِّل ما

    تجمع إلا لناكحٍ ذَكر

    Think, father of the girl, does a collector amass

    Save for a marriageable male?

  36. تغْصبه أهلَهُ وتمنعُهُ

    حقوقَهُ للقُمدِّ ذي العُجَر

    You usurped her family and denied them

    Their rights for a barren cucumber

  37. واسوأتا للحكيمِ همتُهُ

    إشباعُهُ بنتَهُ من الكمر

    The wise man's goal to satiate

    His daughter with wine is most evil

  38. يجمع ما يخطِب الأيور به

    غدا إذا غيَّبَتهُ في العَفَر

    He gathers what he asks the protector for

    Tomorrow if he buries him in dust

  39. مُطَّرَحاً حقّ من يلوذ به

    إلا المُنى أو كواذبَ العِذر

    Discarding the right of one who takes refuge

    Save death or lying excuses

  40. يا أيها الفيلسوف ذا الحكم ال

    جمّةِ مما روى ذوو الفِكرِ

    O philosopher of sublime principles

    As narrated by the scholars

  41. هل حكمةٌ أنَّ قفلَ كفك لا

    يفتَح إلا بمِفتَح العُذَرِ

    Is it wisdom that your closed fist

    Opens only to the key of excuses?

  42. تبخل إلا على القُمُدّ إذا

    شقَّقَ ذاتَ الدلالِ والخفر

    You withhold except for the barren when

    He splits the imploring and pleading

  43. تُضحي وتمسي وأنت ملتمسٌ

    أعيَطَ كالرمح من ذوي الطُّرر

    You sacrifice and pray while searching for

    A wanton like a spear from the exceptional

  44. ينزو عليها فتستمِيت لهُ

    فيغتدي في النُّزاء والأشر

    She entices him and stretches herself out

    So he takes her openly and forcefully

  45. يعجبُك الفحلُ في تراجعه

    على عِجان الفتاةِ بالسَّحر

    You admire the stallion as he mounts

    The young woman's hindparts with sorcery

  46. للَّه ماذا يكون بينهما

    إذا تلاقتْ مداهن السّرَر

    By God, what happens between them

    When their touching places meet?

  47. لهفُك أنْ لا تكون عندهما

    إذا أجابا الحقيقَ بالنُّخَر

    You prefer that to the melody

    Of singing, the charming of strings

  48. ذلك أشهى إليك من نغم ال

    شدو تناغيه غُنّةُ الوتَر

    As she ransoms him, the foolish father

    Dissolute, though the meter is free

  49. وهي تفدِّيه بالأب الأحمق ال

    مائق والرُّهزُ طائرُ الشَّرر

    Did you amass for that or for a rabid one

    You were nicknamed the father of lessons?

  50. لتِلك أثَّلتَ أو لذي هَوجٍ

    أصبحت تُكنَى به أبا العبر

    Nicknamed Father of Righteousness though his righteousness

    Is his multiplying those who dwell in graves

  51. يُكَنى أبا صالحٍ وصالحُهُ

    تكثيرُهُ من يحُلّ في الحفر

    Call not for his remaining, for his death

    Is the best of good

  52. لا تدعُوَنْ بالبقاء ويك له

    فموتُهُ من أخاير الخير

    Stop him is horror to one who ponders him

    His face disfigures the birds

  53. قفاه هول لمن تأمَّلهُ

    ووجههُ طِيرةٌ من الطّيَر

    If he twists in his company

    You see the malignancy of the month

  54. إذا تلَّوى على مُجالسِهِ

    في الحفل عاينْتَ شُهرة الشُّهر

    If he takes up speech, the living die of fatigue

    And you see the shame of defects

  55. فإن تعاطى الحديث مات من ال

    عيِّ وأبصرتَ عُرّةَ العُرر

    He whistles in travel, his whistling

    Rouses the appeals of death in the deserted abode

  56. يصفِر في السير ماله صَفِرَت

    به دواعي المنون في صفر

    Babbling like his one-eyed, clubfooted, deformed

    Uncle, the family of deformities and cripples

  57. مُبثبِثاً مثلَ عمّه الأعور ال

    معورِ أهلِ الإعوارِ والعَور

    He tires his companions and appoints them

    A grievance so each turns away in dismay

  58. يُتعِب جلاسَهُ ويُنصِبُهم

    نَوْكاً فيودي بكل مصطَبر

    Deliver the rest you gathered for him

    If you care for him, O father of cows

  59. أوْدِع سِواه الذي جمعتَ لهُ

    إن كنت ترعاه يا أبا البقر

    If you gathered mountains you would ruin them

    Wrongfully, with no justice or honor

  60. فلو جمعت الجبال أتلفها

    في غير حقٍ يُقضى ولا وطر

    If you stood your stands the judge would win them

    Who sees the injustice of every minor

  61. وإن وقفت الوقوفَ فاز بها

    قاضٍ يرى ظلمَ كل ذي صِغر

    Eating them one time and deputizing

    An agent another, with greatest wage

  62. يأكلها تارة ويُؤكِلها

    طوراً وكيلاً بأغلظ الأجر

    While your son grows old an orphan

    Oh for the elder orphan

  63. وابنك ممن يشيخ وهو من ال

    أيتام يا لليتيم ذي الكِبر

    No man sees him and gives him justice

    While injustice entices every despised one

  64. ليس يراه امرؤ فينصِفَهُ

    والظلم مُغرىً بكل محتقَر

    The hopeful do not hope for the justice of Abu Bakr

    Or Omar upon his like

  65. لا يرتجي المرتجون عدل أبي

    بكرٍ على مثله ولا عمر

    So seek for the inheritance of the wretched from you tomorrow

    A repository, if you influence or lose influence

  66. فاطلب لإرث الشقيّ عنك غداً

    مستودِعاً إن أثرت أو فَذَر

    Entrust him to the loyal in favors

    That bind, not in coffers and assets

  67. أودعْه أهلَ الوفاءِ في مِننٍ

    تُعقَد لا في الصِّرار والبِدَر

    Entrust wealth for him not as a trustee

    But like a cloak and lodging

  68. أودِعْ له المال لا على جهة ال

    إيداع بل كالجِباء والشَّبر

    The keepers will guard you in it if

    It becomes for the strict administrators

  69. يحفظْك فيه المحافظون إذا

    أضحى من الضارطين بالكِسر

    Woe for the advice that came

    From the breast of a noble man concerned for you

  70. واهاً لها من نصيحةٍ صدرت

    من صدرِ حُرٍّ عليك ذي وَحر

    Entrust him the people of loyalty in goodness

    Not chained in necklaces and bracelets
