دهرٌ علا قدرُ الوضيع به

وهوى الشريف يحطُّهُ شرَفُهْ

Time has made the lowly man mighty

While the noble's nobility debases him

كالبحر يرسب فيه لؤلؤُهُ

سفلاً وتطفو فوقه جيَفُهْ

Like the sea where pearls sink to the bottom

While scum floats on the surface

فاصبر على هول الخطوب لها

قلب نماه إلى العلا سلفه

So be patient with the severity of trials

A heart nurtured with noble ancestors

لا مظهراً في عقب نائبة

أسفاً وليس يقوده شعفه

Shows no weakness in the face of calamity

Grief does not make him waver

طوع الصديق يقود ربقته

لا بُطؤه يخشى ولا عُنفه

A friend's obedience guides his reins

No slowness does he fear, no violence

نِكْل العدوِّ يرى به أسفاً

جهماً عبوساً موحشاً كنفه

An enemy's withdrawal he sees with sorrow

Gloomy, frowning, his shelter cheerless

فلقلَّ ما أنحت على أحدٍ

بالجور إلا سوف تنتصفه

So seldom have I blamed anyone

Unjustly, but soon came my revenge
