لي صديقٌ إذا رأت
وجهَهُ العينُ سرَّها
I have a friend, when eyes
See his face, they rejoice
قلت يوماً وخلتهُ
مطلَقَ الكفّ ثَرَّها
I said one day when we met
With open palms that soothe
يا جواداً إذا حمتْ
لِقَحُ المزن دَرَّها
O generous one, when the raining
Clouds water its abundance
فرَّطتْ منك دعوةٌ
تأملُ النفس كرَّها
You missed a prayer
That the soul hoped for
قال كانت فُليتةً
فوَقَى اللَّه شرَّها
He said it was distraction
And God warded off its harm
قلتُ واهاً بجُرعةٍ
ذقتُها ما أمرَّها
I said alas with a sip
That I tasted, so bitter
أنت مذ ذقتها تشكْ
كى إلى الله حرَّها
Since you tasted it, you complain
To God of its bitterness
قال إي والذي قضى
حلّ كفي وصرَّها
He said yes, by Him who ordained
My palms folded and hurt
قلت تب توبة امرئٍ
عَقَّ نفساً وبرَّها
I said the repentance of a man
Who disobeyed himself and was dutiful
كلَّف النفس خطة
لم تطقها وغرَّها
Tasked himself beyond his capacity
And ignorantly harmed himself
ثم قفَّى بتوبةٍ
مطّ فيها وجرَّها
Then sincerely repented
Bowed and dragged himself
ولقد تُنفَع النفو
سُ بما كان ضرَّها
Souls truly benefit
From what once harmed them
