1. كبرتَ فغيرُك الغِرُّ الغُلامُ

    وغير قناعك الجَعْدُ السُّخامُ

    You grew up, so your youth changed,

    And your curly hair changed to straight hair.

  2. وأمسى ماء وجهك غاض عنه

    فماء شؤونك الفيض السُّجامُ

    The water of your face became turbid,

    So the outpouring of your traits became muddy.

  3. وأصبحتِ الظباء مُجانباتٍ

    جنابَك ما لها فيه بُغامُ

    The gazelles kept their distance from you,

    They no longer have desire for you.

  4. وقد يأْلفْنَنِي ومعي سهامي

    فما هذا النِّفار ولا سِهامُ

    And I may become accustomed to you and my arrows,

    Yet this aloofness and lack of arrows remain.

  5. أأُوحشها وقد نصلتْ نِبالي

    وأُونسها وفي نبلي الحِمامُ

    Did I make them feel lonely when my arrows' quivers were full?

    Did I make them feel at ease when my arrows were gentle?

  6. لياليَ لا تزال لديَّ صرعى

    لرشْقي في مقاتلها احتكامُ

    My nights that never cease to fell warriors,

    Due to my shooting during their battles.

  7. ألا جاد الحيا تلكم ظِباءً

    تزيِّنها المقاصرُ لا الخيامُ

    Indeed noble gazelles have distanced themselves,

    They are adorned by tents, not by tents.

  8. عتُقن فهن من قربٍ ملاحٌ

    ورُقْن فهن من بُعْدِ فِخامُ

    They are soft from afar, and elegant from near,

    Their scent is diffused, without any seal.

  9. إلى الله الشَّكاة من اللواتي

    مساكنُها الرُّصافة لا الرجامُ

    I complain to God about those

    Whose dwellings are in Rusafa, not in Rijam.

  10. بحيث تجبح المهديُّ قِدْماً

    وهاشمٌ الأكارمُ لا هشامُ

    They make Al-Mahdi stumble,

    While the noble Hashemites do not make Hisham stumble.

  11. مريضاتُ الجفونِ لغير داءٍ

    لمن لا بسْنَه الداءُ العُقامُ

    Those ill in eyelids, not due to illness,

    For those who are not afflicted by chronic illness.

  12. سقامُ عيونِهن سقامُ قلبي

    وقد يهدي السقام لك السقامُ

    Their eyes' illness is my heart's illness,

    And illness may present illness as a gift.

  13. أعاذلتي وحَبْلي قد تداعى

    وللحبل اتصالٌ وانجِذامُ

    My beloved and my kinship have collapsed,

    Yet kinship has connection and intertwining.

  14. كأن مناعمِي حُلمٌ تقضَّي

    وأسراري مع الخلل احتلامُ

    It is as if my qualities were a dream that passed,

    And my secrets are like confused dreams.

  15. كُسيتُ البيضَ أخلاقاً رِماماً

    فوصْلُ البيضِ أخلاقٌ رِمامُ

    I wore white clothes, with immoral traits,

    Yet the whiteness of clothes reflects immoral traits.

  16. فلا يتشتتنَّ عليك رأيٌ

    فما للبيض والبيضِ التئامُ

    So opinions about me should not be divided,

    For whiteness and the white have no reconciliation.

  17. بليتُ سوى المشيب غدا جديداً

    عليَّ الفذُّ منه والتُّؤامُ

    I have suffered except for graying, which has become new for me,

    Both wondrous and matching have afflicted me.

  18. وكنتُ كروضةٍ للعين أضحَتْ

    وما من نورها إلا النَّغامُ

    I was like a garden delighting the eye,

    Now it has no light but melodies.

  19. وعبَّستِ الحسانُ إلى مَشيبي

    فما لثُغورها برقٌ يُشامُ

    Beautiful faces frowned at my graying,

    For their smiles no longer radiate lightning.

  20. وما يُرجَى من البيض ابتسامٌ

    لمن أمسى لمفرقه ابتسامُ

    A smile is no longer expected from the white

    For one whose forehead's smile has faded.

  21. كأن محاسني لم تَضْحَ يوماً

    وفي لحظاتهنَّ لها اقتسامُ

    It is as if my charms never shone one day,

    And their glances always took turns being distributed.

  22. كأني لم أر اللمحاتِ نحوي

    وفي اللمحاتِ لثْمٌ والتزامُ

    It is as if I never saw their gazes towards me,

    Yet in their glances is a kiss and a bond.

  23. لئن ودَّعتُ جهلي غير قولي

    ألا سُقيتْ معاهدُنا القِدامُ

    If I have bid farewell to my ignorance without changing my words,

    The covenants between us have lasted long.

  24. لقد يهتز لي غصنٌ رطيبٌ

    وقد يرتجُّ لي دِعْصٌ ركامُ

    It is as if I have never endured being watered with pleasure,

    Where one dies from it, and the desperate lives.

  25. ويسقيني شفاءَ النَّفسِ ثغرٌ

    ويسقيني شِفاء الوجْدِ جامُ

    She makes excuses for me, her contours apparent,

    As if her meeting were the new crescent moon.

  26. ويُسمعني رقاة الهمِّ شدْواً

    تغادر كل يومٍ وهو رامُ

    She breathes like the dawn breeze from the north,

    When the seal is removed from her mouth.

  27. سماعٌ إن أردتَ إدامَ عيش

    فذاك من السماع له إدامُ

    She gives you a drink that heals and cures,

    So a coolness flows in the intestines, and turmoil ceases.

  28. عجيبٌ كالحبيب له هناتٌ

    بها يُشفَى الجوى وبها يُهامُ

    They said: If the departing soul would return,

    It would find in it a replacement, and craving would leave.

  29. بأخضر جادَهُ طلٌّ ووبْلٌ

    وما جرمته بينهما الرِّهامُ

    I said: The wine of singers' mouths,

    Is wine that no other wine can equal.

  30. غوادٍ لا تفرّطُ أو سوارٍ

    روائمُ لا يزالُ لها رِزامُ

    Your solace for youth that time has afflicted,

    With its softness and determination,

  31. فوردتُه وشُقْرتُه احمرارٌ

    وحُمْرتُه وخُضرتُه ادْهِمامُ

    Before you, generations stood up

    For the doubt of fate or bowed down (in resignation).

  32. تقسَّمَ أمره شجرٌ وروضٌ

    عليه من زواهره فِدامُ

    Relentless time brings abhorrence,

    Preceding eras brought abhorrence.

  33. كساه الغيثُ كِسوتَه فأضحى

    له منها ائتزارٌ واعتمامُ

    It passed cups of bitterness to the sons of Ham and Shem,

    One day bitter like poison, another day hot like fever.

  34. يظلُّ وللرِّياح به اصطخابٌ

    وللعُجْمِ الفصاحِ به اختصامُ

    And time has phases you see,

    In which honey is harvested, and poison sucked.

  35. وللقُضبِ اللِّدان به اعتناقٌ

    وللأنوارِ فيهنِّ التئامُ

    So years where a year is like a day,

    And days where a day is like a year.

  36. تراهُ إذا تجاوب طائراهُ

    تُجاوِبُ عَثْعثاً فيه زُنامُ

    Like bees having sometimes stings, sometimes wax,

    And palm trees having sometimes thorns and sometimes fruit.

  37. حَمامٌ الأيكِ يُسعِدُه هَزارٌ

    فدى المُكَّاءُ ذَيْنكَ والسَّمامُ

    Do not grieve, for the changing of fate is words,

    And healing, even if words have bled.

  38. وأخلاطٌ من الغَرداتِ شتَّى

    حواسرُ أو عليهنَّ الكِمامُ

    A friendly morning breeze will console you of your youth,

    With the generosity of his hands the peace blossomed.

  39. ألا لا عَيْشَ لي إلا زهيداً

    ودونَ لِثام من أهوى لِثامُ

    He represents the noble traits and virtues,

    Where the head and the crown are from.

  40. وكم نادمتُ راحَ الروحِ فاهُ

    ولكن خانني ذاك الندامُ

    He has a reputation reaching them,

    And a direction to stretch and sleep.

  41. كأني لم أبِتْ أُسقَى رُضاباً

    يموتُ به ويحيا المُستهامُ

    A station where praises are sung mysteriously,

    And truth is observed, along with the protector.

  42. تُعلِّلنيه واضحةُ الثنايا

    كأن لقاءها حولاً لِمامُ

    And how much pleasure anchored next to it,

    Welcomed by drinking friends and chatting companions.

  43. تنفَّسُ كالشَّمولِ ضُحى شمالٍ

    إذا ما فُضَّ عن فمها الخِتامُ

    They came to it, traveling the width of the earth extensively,

    To it they have an ardent desire and hope.

  44. وتَسقيكَ الذي يشفي ويُدوِي

    ففي الأحشاء بردٌ واضطرامُ

    If they traversed a distance from Al-Muwamah,

    Distances not marked with landmarks.

  45. وقالوا لو أدارَ الراحَ كانت

    له عِوَضاً وفارقهُ الهُيامُ

    Al-Ya'four plunges into rugged terrain,

    And Al-Harbaa wrestles in the noon sun.

  46. فقلتُ مُدامُ أفواهِ الغواني

    مُدامٌ لا يعادله مُدامُ

    Their saddles shed their cargo,

    And their swords unsheathed their blades.

  47. عزاؤك عن شباب نالَ منه

    زمانٌ فيه لينٌ واعتزامُ

    Trusting that they will find and be served

    A spring for the thirsty, with drinkable water.

  48. فقَبْلكَ قام أقوامٌ قُعودٌ

    لريب الدهر أو قعد القيامُ

    And that the lofty howdah litters will return,

    As if their lances are the well-rooted Bamboo.

  49. وما يَنفَكُّ يَلْقَى الكُرْهَ فيهِ

    فِئامٌ قد تَقَدَّمَهُ فِئامُ

    So they arrived, not at spring or the year,

    But the spring of fate that has no end.

  50. أدار على بني حامٍ وسامٍ

    كؤوساً مُرَّةً حامٌ وسامُ

    The purpose of livelihood and essence of knowledge

    Which signify his merit as the crowds witness.

  51. نهارٌ شكْلُهُ في اللون سامٌ

    وليلٌ شكلُهُ في اللونِ حامُ

    Essences in his resources are healing,

    For one who has reached the climax of his illness.

  52. وهذا الدهرُ أطوارٌ تراها

    وفيها الشَّهْدُ يُجنى والسِّمامُ

    My crude poetry deserves your forgiveness,

    Compared to the refined forgiveness you possess.

  53. فأعوامٌ كأن العامَ يومٌ

    وأيامٌ كأن اليومَ عامُ

    You are a brother who spent nights as my guest in towns,

    Pleasing, undisturbed by grief.

  54. كدأبِ النَّحلِ أرْيٌ أو حُماتٌ

    ودأبِ النخلِ شَوْك أو جُرامُ

    I gathered you for a period, how astonishing!

    But the sea and clouds never part.

  55. ولا تَجزَعْ فصرفُ الدَّهْرِ كَلْمٌ

    وتَعفيةٌ وإن دَمِيَتْ كِلامُ

    And it is my duty to present an apology,

    Though you did not accuse me.

  56. سيُسليك الشبيبةَ أرْيَحِيٌّ

    بجودِ يديْه أورقتِ السِّلامُ

    To you, Abu Al-Husain, I direct words,

    With a bridle strongly tied to your cord.

  57. يحُلُّ من المكارم والمعالي

    بحيثُ الرأسُ منها والسَّنامُ

    I testify I have given you the essence of my love,

    No blame or sin on me.

  58. له ذِكَرٌ إليها مُستراحٌ

    وناحيةٌ إليها مُستنامُ

    I have not fallen short in hoping,

    Nor did you neglect my right and sleep.

  59. مُدبِّرُ دولةٍ وقِوامُ مُلْكٍ

    كهِمَّتك المدبِّر والقِوامُ

    I made you the destination of my hopes,

    For they are prayers, not fasting.

  60. يروقك أو يروعك لا بظلم

    كما يتلوَّن السيفُ الحُسامُ

    How can craving hopes fast,

    When your happy fulfillment provides their food?

  61. يضاحك تارة ويكون أخرى

    بحيث تَهُزُّه قَصَرٌ وهامُ

    Food where no fault is feared,

    And good deeds provide delicious food.

  62. فآونةً لصفحته انبلاجٌ

    وآونةً لشفرته اصطلامُ

    When I anchored towards you, O Isa (Jesus),

    While my hopes are frail or broken.

  63. أخو قلم صروفُ الدهر منه

    ففيه العيشُ والموتُ الزُّؤامُ

    I anchored such that hands turned white,

    And kitchens darkened, and cooking pots simmered.

  64. كتابتُه مناقفةُ العوالي

    وليستْ ما يُرَقِّشه القِلامُ

    Except that I stand in awe of you, not for evil,

    As the swimming champion stands in awe of the sea.

  65. ضئيلٌ شأنُهُ شأنٌ نبيلٌ

    يَطُوعُ لأمره الجيشُ اللُّهامُ

    And my shyness controls me when you nurture

    My gratitude with your great favors.

  66. به تَبْدو الصوارمُ حين تَخفى

    وتَخفى حين تبدو والخِدامُ

    Have you not seen that when we met,

    And were sung to by your mighty feats,

  67. إذا سكناتُ صاحبه أملَّتْ

    على حركاته سكنَ الأنامُ

    I saw that gratitude had weakened,

    So it prepared for escape and cannot be blamed.

  68. أخو ثقةٍ إذا الأقلام أضحتْ

    بني حِمَّانَ عمَّهُمُ الزكامُ

    While you were the victorious conqueror if

    Your gathering was blamed by the blamer.

  69. أمينٌ في معايبِهِ أمونٌ

    سليمُ الأنفِ ليسَ به زُكامُ

    You do not cease to defeat all gratitude,

    With a custom where its knot cannot be untied.

  70. تمج الفيء والمعروفَ مجّاً

    وللأقلام حَطْم وانتقامُ

    That is because I am permitted, and nothing is protected,

    Not because I am prohibited, seeking the forbidden.

  71. بكفِّ فتىً له نَفْعٌ وضرٌّ

    وإنعامٌ يُؤمَّلُ وانتقامُ

    When a benefactor intended to betray,

    Your purpose remained firmly fixed.

  72. يُقلِّبهُ برأيٍ لا تجزَّا

    ولا يخبو لقدحته ضرامُ

    So if the meeting was void, do not blame me,

    For my absence from you means defeat.

  73. وزيرٌ للوزير يرى فيُغني

    إذا طرقت مجلِّحةٌ جُلامُ

    Your insistence expelled falsehood forcefully,

    That is how the generous expel falsity.

  74. له عزمٌ إذا نفذ ارتياءٌ

    وإمضاءٌ إذا وقع اعتزامُ

    How much the patronized have followed you to gain spoils,

    Unable to remain firmly tied to you.

  75. فما لعزيمةٍ منه انفلالٌ

    ولا لضريمةٍ منه اقتحامُ

    A cloud that poured in the footsteps of one departing,

    Reached and overtook him.

  76. ولا في عُقدةٍ منه انحلالٌ

    ولا في عُروةٍ منه انفصامُ

    Can one of the travelers escape

    When the cloud or darkness seeks him?

  77. متى ما انشامَ في غيبٍ صوابٌ

    نعاه ابن الحسين فلا انشيامُ

    I complained of your generosity, not because it lessened, but

    Because your great hands increased.

  78. يبيت أبو الحسين يرى أموراً

    لها في سُدفةِ الغيب اكتمامُ

    And that I have been tested by it, so it has become

    As if my acquisitions from it are debts.

  79. يراه أبو الحسين وإن تَوارى

    بعينٍ لا تَكِلُّ ولا تنامُ

    Like a man complaining of the tyranny of a torrent,

    Where valley and hill are equalized.

  80. ولولا حَمْلُهُ الأثقالَ أضحت

    ظُهورُ معاشرٍ ولها انحطامُ

    Yet I do not complain of you to the Merciful,

    While I forcibly silence my gratitude.

  81. ولكنْ قدْ تَحمَّلها ضليعٌ

    له في الخَطْبِ حَزمٌ واحتزامُ

    If my gratitude has not been long suppressed,

    Then I cannot be subjected to suppression by you.

  82. محمدٌ بنُ أحمدٍ بنِ يحيى

    لأنفِ عدو نعمتِه الرُّغامُ

    You are not one I would reproach from the start of a custom,

    Without repetition, as the pigeons were not reproached.

  83. وغرس الأصبغيِّ كفاكَ غرساً

    إذا غُرِسَ الهشيمُ أو الحُطامُ

    So repeat as you wish, I will not complain,

    Does the dew complain but only to the despicable?

  84. تخيَّرَهُ الوزيرُ وزيرَ صدقٍ

    وللوزراء خبطٌ واعتيامُ

    Your extended favor is not severed from me

    If words are severed.

  85. فرأفتُه بنا فوق التمنِّي

    إذا كثُر التغطرُسُ والعُرامُ

    I deceived you, and your deception of me is deserved,

    To God belongs the increase and completion.

  86. ونائلهُ لنا فلنا اقتراعٌ

    على نفحاتِه ولنا استهامُ

    And I said as if I were in a torrential day,

    With complete destruction and ruin from its onset to its end.

  87. ولا عاتٍ يصولُ على ضعيفٍ

    صِيالَ الفيل هاج به اغتلامُ

    But I have not broken your custom at all,

    Except that I complained of carrying your gratitude and peace.

  88. نُساسُ ولا نُجاس وكم عداءٍ

    غدا لمآثم منه النَّدامُ

    And how much pleasant nonsense you made me articulate continuously,

    While I am silent, and speech maintains composure.

  89. وقد نُحدَى كما تُحدَى المطايا

    وقد نُرعَى كما تُرعَى البِهامُ

    And how much you silenced me with burdensome nonsense,

    While I do not speak, and the sea roars.

  90. فتى ضامتْ يداهُ الدهرَ حتى

    تعزَّ به المضيمُ فما يُضامُ

    It does not cease intertwining us and flowing

    Clear water for you, not muddied by a cup.

  91. يزيدُك كلَّما أغليتَ حمداً

    به رِبحاً وفيه لك انهضامُ

    We bend when it is pure, and without refusal,

    When the unsheathed sword terrifies the scabbard falls silent.

  92. كذا أخلاقُ مُبتاعي المعالي

    ترفَّعُ كلما رُفِعَ استيامُ

    You never give except a hot passion stirs,

    It bows down while shyness holds its reins.

  93. يجودُ فجودُهُ كرمٌ ودِينٌ

    وبعضُ الجودِ بذخٌ أو وئامُ

    You close up our openings and make us withdraw,

    Then we request to be spared and suppressed.

  94. تناهبَ مالَهُ شرقٌ وغربٌ

    ولمَّا يُعفِه يمنٌ وشامُ

    And we receive from you, disdaining the self,

    And the least of it acquires worth and is protected.

  95. فأصبحَ والثناءُ عليه فرضٌ

    على هذا الورى حتْمٌ لِزامُ

    Structures which no Hatim had built

    Nor Aus and Harithah and Lam.

  96. جديراً أن يحوزَ الحمدَ عفواً

    إذا ما عزَّ من حَمْدٍ مَرامُ

    But a Persian of influential deeds,

    With a beginning but no ending.

  97. بمالٍ لا يُشدُّ عليه عقْدٌ

    وجاهٍ لا يُحَلُّ له حِزامُ

    What astonishment that I feel embarrassed of my inability,

    While seizing your forgiveness is to gain benefit!

  98. أقامهما لملتمسٍ جَداهُ

    كريمٌ للكرامِ به ائتمامُ

    You love gratitude, not when heat exhausted the passionate,

    Rather, the moderate flow punishes the impediment.

  99. تقاسَمَ وجهُهُ ويداه منه

    محاسنَ لا يُعفِّيها القتامُ

    When I hold to account one with gratitude,

    Then weakness overcomes me with reverence.

  100. فأقسامُ المكارمِ في يديْه

    وللوجهِ الوضاءةُ والقسامُ

    Are you not the man who honors in shyness,

    As if your good favor was stolen?

  101. فليستْ تُشرقُ الآفاقُ إلا

    إذا طلعتْ محاسنُه الوِسامُ

    He conceals his favor so it diffuses from him,

    The diffuser of musk has no concealment.

  102. رأى الضِّلِّيلُ قَصدَ هُداهُ فيه

    وأسهبَ في ممادحه العبامُ

    We diminish his gratitude so he deserves forgiveness,

    We wrong his money so he deserves gathering.

  103. مكارمُهُ إذا ذُكرتْ جِبالٌ

    وكم قومٍ مكارمهُم رِضامُ

    Indeed you were quenched by your Lord wherever you are quenched,

    The mounts of manliness, not of tyranny.

  104. تعوَّدت المحامدَ والعطايا

    أناملُ منه نائلها انسجامُ

    So the vulgar may be watered while they are forms,

    And the vulgar may be served while they are riffraff.

  105. فليس لها عن الحمدِ انفراجٌ

    وليس لها على المالِ انضمامُ

    Tomorrow, the seeking will be behind you in virtues,

    Like a row with the imam leading.

  106. لبدْأتِهِ حياً ومتى عَرَضْنا

    لعودته فليس لها جَهامُ

    Time has assigned me men of glory,

    Yet you were my essential choice from them.

  107. يُبادِرُ أن يَصِلَّ المالُ حتى

    كأنَّ المالَ يملكه لِحامُ

    Family of the most fortunate and stars of blessings,

    But the full moon outshone them.

  108. وليس يصِلُّ صفْوُ التبرِ لكن

    له في ماله حدٌّ هُذامُ

    Who would disparage if he were left out of praise

    When his guess has guided the sublime?

  109. وليس أمام نائله عُبوسٌ

    وليس وراءه منه نَدامُ

    Though he was denied praise, he is not of those

    Whose opinion is said to be misguided.

  110. يُساقِطُهُ النَّدى حتى تراهُ

    وليس لجانبٍ منه ادِّعامُ

    Many are selective of praiseworthy matters,

    Wearing praise and blame.

  111. ويُمسكهُ الحجا حتى تراه

    وما في جانبٍ منه انثلامُ

    But I did not become like she who chose, and so

    The best of names for her was smallpox.

  112. لذلك لا تزالُ له عطايا

    لهُنَّ على مؤمِّله ازدحامُ

    Rather, I chose one where opinions of him are divine revelations

    Sent down, not carnal desire flaring up and zealous.

  113. كما ليستْ تزال له دواةٌ

    لداهٍ في مَهالكها ارتطامُ

    The envious of your glory dispute with us saying:

    What are his virtues? We said: They are good merits without blemish.

  114. وبادي الجهل جَاوَدَهُ فقلنا

    متى استعلى على النخلِ البشامُ

    They said: What are his surpassing deeds? We said:

    A nurture that reproof after weaning does not punish.

  115. وساهِي العقلِ ناجَدَهُ فقلنا

    متى أربى على النبعِ الثُّمامُ

    Deeds among deeds that are supreme ladies,

    Deeds whose superiority over others is absolute.

  116. أما وأبي الحُسينِ فداهُ قومٌ

    لهُمْ نِعَمٌ وأكثرهُمْ نعامُ

    And actions which the insomniac haters

    Pass the night with, when the sleeper rests.

  117. لموَّلني إلى أن قال أهلي

    أأحلامٌ يُخيِّلُها منامُ

    A favor whose registry verifies the origin,

    With no bridle of guilt restraining it.

  118. وقوَّمَني إلى أن قام عُودي

    فما في متنهِ أودٌ يُقامُ

    Die, O envious ones, die of an illness

    That does not die or sleep!

  119. برأْيٍ لستُ أبرحُ منه أضحى

    وجودٍ لا أزالُ له أُغامُ

    Do not construct the words of falsehood about him,

    For what Allah has constructed will not collapse.

  120. نفتْ جَهلي نُهاه وشيَّبتْني

    لُهاه فها انا الكَهْلُ الغُلامُ

    I have presented you a necklace of poetry

    Whose pearls are yours while the string arrangement is mine.

  121. فدته النفسُ من بانٍ كريمٍ

    مبانيه المكارمُ لا الرُّخامُ

    I have fallen short, not deliberately, but

    Dazzled, while a mighty king has honored me.

  122. بنى لي همَّتِي حتى تعالتْ

    وكانت مرَّةً وهي اهتمامُ

    I did not fall short in reward before you,

    But summit ambitions are inaccessible to me.

  123. أسائلتي حججت البيت إني

    حججتُ فتى المُروءةِ يا أدامُ

    Every challenger of you is fearful,

    Hiding the letter by merging it.

  124. حججت أبا الحسين وكان حجّي

    إليه لا يُذمُّ ولا يُذامُ

    Furthermore, I have no swaying,

    How can this be while I have no herbs?

  125. أُقبِّلُ كفَّهُ وأعلُّ منها

    نَدىً يُشْفى به مني الأُوامُ

  126. فلي من بطن راحته ارتِواءٌ

    ولي في ظهر راحته استلامُ

    They are but two sandals, utterly torn,

    To shoes both split open back to front.

  127. ظللتُ بمأمنٍ منه حريزٍ

    يخيَّلُ أنَّه البيت الحرامُ

    Winter has attacked while many villains

    Wear its cotton and plucked wool.

  128. وزمزمُ والحطيمُ لديَّ منه

    هنالك والمشاعرُ والمقامُ

    No man met you and then said:

    What lies behind you, O crowder?

  129. مقامٌ تُنْشدُ الأمداحُ تُتْرى

    ويُرْعى الحقُّ فيه والذِّمامُ

    Your eloquent explanation of bounties suffices,

    Speaking whenever words are lacking.

  130. وكم نِضْوٍ أناخ بها إليه

    تضيَّفُها المجادب والسآمُ

    How much have you tempted, by the deceased from us,

    The envious brother whose saddle shook!

  131. أتَتْهُ تَجوبُ عرضَ الأرضِ جَوْباً

    إليه لها خبيبٌ وارتئامُ

    So live for the virtues, it is not feared

    That they will lack your reverence while you exist.

  132. إذا قطعتْ من المَوماةِ مَرْتاً

    من الأمرات ليس به عِلامُ

    You have given me, of the jewelry of poetry, a necklace

    Whose pearls are now yours while the stringing is mine.

  133. وللْيَعْفورِ في الكَزِّ انغماسٌ

    وللحِرباء في الضِّحِّ اصْطخامُ

    I have fallen short, not deliberately, but

    Dazzled, while the authority of an important king has honored me.

  134. تطايرَ عن مناسِمِها حصاهُ

    وسافرَ عن مشافرها اللُّغامُ

    I did not fall short rewarding you before,

    But the summits are inaccessible to me.

  135. على ثقةٍ بأنْ سترَى وترعى

    ربيعاً للطَّليح به مَسامُ

    Every challenger to you is fearful,

    Wearing the silent letter by merging.

  136. وأن ستفيء تامكة الأعالي

    كأن سنامها الرعِنُ الخُشامُ

    Afterward, I have no swaying,

    How can this be while I have no herbs?

  137. فوافتْ لا ربيعَ الحولِ لكن

    ربيعَ الدهرِ ليس له انصرامُ

    No slip is feared on my camel,

    Nor is collision feared on my mare.

  138. مَرَادُ معيشةٍ ومَعانُ علمٍ

    يدُلُّ على فضيلتِه الزِّحامُ

    They are but two sandals, utterly torn open,

    Both having split backs to the slippers.

  139. مَعانٌ في مواردِهِ شِفاءٌ

    لمن أضحى لعلَّته احتدامُ

    Winter has attacked while many despicable ones

    Wear its rough cotton and plucked wool.

  140. له العفواتُ من شِعري بعُرْفٍ

    إلى العفواتِ منه والجِمامُ

    And no man met you then said:

    What lies behind you, O mighty prominent one?

  141. أخٌ كم باتَ ضيْفي في قِراه

    قريرَ العينِ ليس به اعتِمامُ

    It suffices that your eloquent explanation of bounties

    Speaks whenever words are lacking.

  142. وقد أجْممتُهُ زمناً وأنَّى

    وليس يُفارقُ البحرَ الجمامُ

    How much have you tempted, by the deceased from us,

    An envious brother whose saddle shook!

  143. وحُقَّ عليّ إهداءُ اعتذارٍ

    وإنْ لم يُهدَ لي منه اتِّهامُ

    So live for virtues, there is no fear

    Of lacking reverence for them while you exist.

  144. إليك أبا الحسين أقودُ قولاً

    له من حبلك الألوى خطامُ

    You have given me, of poetry's jewelry, a necklace

    Whose pearls are now yours, while the stringing is mine.

  145. شهدتُ لقد منحتُكَ صفو ودي

    ولا لومٌ عليَّ ولا أثامُ

    I have fallen short, not deliberately, but

    Dazzled, while a mighty king's authority honored me.

  146. وما قصَّرتُ في التأميلِ كلا

    ولا أمسيتَ عن حقي تنامُ

    I did not fall short rewarding you before,

    But summits are unattainable to me.

  147. جعلتُكَ قبلة الآمال مني

    فهنَّ مُصلياتٌ لا صيامُ

    Every challenger to you is fearful,

    Wearing the silent letter's merging.

  148. وكيف تصومُ آمالٌ غِراثٌ

    ونائلُك الهنيء لها طعامُ

    Afterward, I have no swaying,

    وفي المعروف أطعمةٌ وِخامُ

    على شكري دسائِعُك الضخامُ

    Your eloquent explanation of bounties suffices,

    Speaking whenever words are lacking.

  154. ألم تر أننا لما التقينا

    فغنَّتني صنائعُك الجسامُ

    How much have you tempted, by the deceased from us,

    An envious brother whose saddle shook!

  155. رأيتُ الشكر قد ضعفت قواه

    فشمَّر للفرار ولا يُلامُ

    So live for virtues, it is not feared

    Of losing reverence for them while you exist.

  156. وكنتَ الغالب المنصور جنداً

    إذا لاقى تذمُّمَك الذمامُ

  157. وما تنفكُّ تغلبُ كل شكرٍ

    بعُرٍف ما لعُروته انفصامُ

  158. وذاك بأن أبيح فليس يُحمى

    وليس بأن أعزَّ فما يُرامُ

  159. وكنت إذا نوى المحسانُ ظعناً

    عن الحسنى فنيَّتُك المُقامُ

  160. فإن راثَ اللقاءُ فلا تلمني

    فإن تخلُّفي عنك انهزامُ

  161. ووكدُك طرد زَوْرك بالعطايا

    كذلك يطردُ الزَوْر الكرامُ

  162. وكم تبعَ المولِّي منك سيبٌ

    فلم يُقدَر له منك اعتصامُ

  163. غمامٌ جدَّ في آثارِ سارٍ

    أغذَّ سُرىً فأدركه الغمامُ

  164. وهل ينجو من الركبان ناجٍ

    وطالبُهُ الغمامُ أو الظلامُ

  165. شكوتُ نداك لا أن قلَّ لكن

    لأن كثرتْ أياديه العظامُ

  166. وأني قد بعلتُ به فأضحى

    كأن مغانمي منه غرامُ

  167. كما يشكو امرؤٌ طغيانَ سيلٍ

    تساوى الوهدُ فيه والأكامُ

  168. وما أشكوه منك إلى رحيم

    وشكري في ذَراهُ مستضامُ

  169. وما لمْ تهتضم شكري بطَولٍ

    فليس ينالني منك اهتضامُ

  170. ولستَ بمُعتبي من بدء عرفٍ

    بغير العود ما سجَعَ الحمامُ

  171. فعاودْ كيف شئت فلست أشكو

    وهل يشكو الندى إلا اللئامُ

  172. وما معروفُك الممدود عني

    بمنقطعٍ إذا انقطع الكلامُ

  173. خدعتُك وانخداعك لي خليقٌ

    على الله الزيادةُ والتمامُ

  174. وقلتُ كأنني يوم بسيلٍ

    لأعلاه وأسفله التطامُ

  175. ولم أبْرمْ بعرفك غير أني

    برمتُ بحملِ شكرك والسلامُ

  176. وكم أنطقتني بلُهىً توالت

    وما صمتي وللقول انتظامُ

  177. وكم أسكتَّني بلهىً تغالت

    وما نُطقي وللبحر التطامُ

  178. وما ينفكُّ يلحمنا ويجري

    ندىً لك لا ينهنهه لجامُ

  179. يُبرُّ فنستكينُ وغيرُ نكرٍ

    إذا شُبَّ الجلادُ خبا اللِّطامُ

  180. وما أعطيتَ إلا ارتاشَ حرٌّ

    وأطرق والحياءُ له كِعامُ

  181. تسدُّ فُقورنا وتغضُّ منا

    فنستعفي هناك ونُستدامُ

  182. ونلقى منك محتقِراً لُهاهُ

    وحولَ أخسِّها قَدْراً يُحامُ

  183. بنىً لا حاتمٌ كان ابتناها

    ولا أوسٌ وحارثةٌ ولامُ

  184. ولكن كسرويٌّ ذو فعالٍ

    له بدءٌ وليس له اختتامُ

  185. فيا عجبي أأستحيي لعجزي

    وفيك لأن تسامحني اغتنامُ

  186. تحبُّ الشكر لا ما كدَّ حرّاً

    بل المجرى يُعاقبه المَصامُ

  187. متى ناقشت ذا شكرٍ حساباً

    فيدْخُلني من العجز احتشامُ

  188. ألستَ المرءَ يكرمُ في حياءٍ

    كأن صنيعك الحسنَ اجترامُ

  189. ويكتمُ عُرفَهُ فيفوحُ منه

    وليس لساطع المسكِ اكتتامُ

  190. ونبخس شكره فله اغتفارٌ

    ونظلمُ مالَه فله اظطلامُ

  191. بلى فسقاكَ ربكَ حيثُ تُسقى

    جحاجحةُ المروءةِ لا الطَّغامُ

  192. فقد يُسقى الرجالُ وهم رسومٌ

    وقد يُرعى الرجالُ وهم سوامُ

  193. غدا الساعون خلفك في المعالي

    كمثل الصفّ يقدمُهُ الإمامُ

  194. وسامنيَ الزمانُ رجالَ مجدٍ

    فكنتَ نصيّتي فيما أُسامُ

  195. أهلَّةُ أسعُدٍ ونجومُ يُمنٍ

    ولكن بذَّها قمرٌ تمامُ

  196. ومن يخترك لا يُحمد وأنَّى

    وقد هَدى توسُّمه الوسامُ

  197. وليس وإن عداهُ الحمدُ ممن

    يقال لرأيه رأيٌ كهامُ

  198. وكم متخيِّرٍ أمراً حميداً

    تحلَّى الحمدُ منه والملامُ

  199. ولم أكُ كالتي اختارت فأضحى

    من الأسماءِ خيرتُها جُذامُ

  200. بل اخترتُ الذي الآراءُ طرَّاً

    عليه فلا هوىً سرف وحامُ

  201. وحسادٌ سناءَك خاصمونا

    وهل في الصبح منبلجاً خصامُ

  202. وقالوا ما فضائله فقلنا

    هي الحسناتُ ما فيهن ذامُ

  203. وقالوا ما فواضله فقلنا

    رضاعٌ لا يعاقبه فِطامُ

  204. صنائعُ في الصنائع سيداتٌ

    صنائع من سواه لهن آمُ

  205. وأفعالٌ يبيت لحاسديه

    بها سمرٌ إذ هجعَ النيامُ

  206. ومعروفٌ له ديوانُ أصلٍ

    وليس عليه من عذلٍ زِمامُ

  207. فموتوا أيها الحسادُ موتوا

    بداءٍ لا يموتُ ولا ينامُ

  208. ولا تبنوا مقالَ الإفكِ فيه

    فليس لما بنى اللَّهُ انهدامُ

  209. منحتُكَ من حُلِيِّ الشعرِ عقداً

    غدا لك دُرُّهُ وليَ النظامُ

  210. وقد قصَّرتُ لا عمداً ولكن

    بُهرتُ وعزَّني ملك همامُ

  211. وما قصَّرتُ قبلكَ في جزاءٍ

    ولكنَّ المسامي لي شَمامُ

  212. وكل مطاولٍ لك فهو خافٍ

    خفاء الحرف لابسه ادّغامُ

  213. وبعدُ فليس في ملكي عناقٌ

    وكيف بها وما عندي شِبامُ

  214. وما يُخشى على جملي قُلافٌ

    ولا يخشى على فرسي صِدامُ

  215. هما نعلانِ جلُّهما انخراقٌ

    إلى خُفَّينِ جُلُّهما انخرامُ

  216. وقد هجم الشتاء وكم لئيمٍ

    عليه الخز والوبر اللُّوامُ

  217. وما لاقى امرؤ لاقاك قوماً

    فقالوا ما وراءك يا عصامُ

  218. كفاه مسائليه بيانُ نعمى

    تكلَّمُ كلما عُدمَ الكلامُ

  219. وكم أغريتَ بالمرحومِ منا

    أخا حسدٍ لمرجلهِ اهتزامُ

  220. فعشْ للمكْرماتِ فليس يُخشى

    عليها ما بقيتَ لها اخترامُ
