1. يا أحمد بن سعيدٍ لا تَمتْ جزعاً

    فالحبُّ طعمانِ ممرورٌ ومعسولُ

    O Ahmad son of Sa'id, do not despair

    For love has two flavors, bitter and sweet

  2. فيه مصائبُ منها ما أُصبتُ بها

    وفي المصائبِ للميزان تثقيلُ

    It has tribulations, some of which I have tasted

    And in tribulations, there is burden for the scale

  3. نُبِّئْتُ أنَّ محبَّاً باتَ كعثبُها

    زيداً وزيدٌ بحكم النحوِ مفعولُ

    I was told that a lover spent the night restless

    Like Zaid who grammatically is the object

  4. باتتْ عروساً بأزواجٍ وباتَ لها

    عِرسٌ لعمْرُكَ لم يشهدهُ جبريلُ

    She spent the night a bride with husbands

    A wedding, by your life, unseen by Gabriel

  5. غنَّتْ نهاراً وباتتْ وهْي زامرةٌ

    حتى الصباحِ وللأحوالِ تحويلُ

    She sang by day and spent the night singing

    Until morning, for conditions change

  6. قالتْ محبٌّ وقد عضَّ الزيّار بها

    بين الندامى وسيفُ النيك مسلولُ

    The lover said, having bitten his nails in anguish

    Among the repentant, while the sword of virtue is sheathed

  7. زلَّ الحِمارُ وكانت تيكَ مُنْيَتُه

    إن الحمارَ حمارُ السوءِ مَوْحُول

    The donkey slipped, and it was as if it stumbled

    Verily the donkey, a donkey of ill omen, slipped

  8. يا أحمد بن سعيدٍ لو بصُرتَ بها

    إذ الأكفُّ لساقيها خلاخيلُ

    O Ahmad son of Sa'id, had you seen her

    With anklets on her legs like bells

  9. يا أحمد بن سعيدٍ لو بصرت بها

    وذيلُها لأيورِ القومِ منديلُ

    O Ahmad son of Sa'id, had you seen her

    Her train the handkerchief of the people

  10. غدا عليها بنو اللَّذاتِ فابتذلوا

    من سُؤْلِ نفسك ما صان السراويلُ

    The pleasure seekers came to her in the morning insulting

    That which her dress concealed

  11. إحدى المصائب فاصبرْ يا ابنَ أمِّ لها

    وهل على حدثان الدهر تعويلُ

    One of the tribulations, so be patient O son of a forbearing mother

    Can the turns of fate be relied upon?

  12. هوِّن عليكَ فإنَّ الأمر وافقَها

    وكان منها اعتناقٌ فيه تقبيلُ

    console yourself, for the matter pleased her

    And there was an embrace with a kiss

  13. وشِيبَ ذاك بشوبٍ من عيارتها

    بادٍ وإنْ قالت الحسناءُ مجهولُ

    That whitened with a tinge of her virility

    Fading though the beauty called it unknown

  14. تساكرتْ كي يقول القائلون لها

    لا يُسلبُ الحرُّ إلا وهْو مقتولُ

    She drank that it be said she is free

    The freeman is not robbed unless he's killed

  15. صبراً جميلاً فإن الصبَّ مصطبرٌ

    على القرونِ وإن ألوَى بها الطُّولُ

    Have patience, beautiful patience, for the patient

    Prevails through the ages though they wear him

  16. تبذُلْ ثواباً لك الحسناءُ موعدَها

    لكنَّ نائلها للمُرْدِ مبذولُ

    The beauty promised you a reward

    But its obtainer is surrendered to death

  17. واعلم جُزيتَ أبا العباس نافلةً

    أنَّ المحبَّ له تاجٌ وإكليلُ

    Know you were rewarded, O Father of Al-Abbas, overflowing

    For the lover has a crown and wreath

  18. تاجٌ متى لاح فالإزراء يتبعه

    حتماً إذا تبع التيجان تبجيلُ

    A crown which when it shines, disparagement follows it

    Naturally when crowns are followed by veneration

  19. فاصبرْ على التاج إن التاج محتملٌ

    وإن تحمَّلت تاجاً طولُهُ مِيلُ

    So be patient with the crown, though bearing a crown

    Whose length is a mile, tires

  20. تيجانُ أهلِ التصابي من قرونِهمُ

    قدْماً ومن صفوة العارِ الأكاليلُ

    Crowns of the purified generations are

    Ancient, and the choice dishonor, wreaths

  21. فانعمْ بحُبلاكَ واعلمْ أنها جَزَرٌ

    للنيكِ قد فُعلتْ فيها الأفاعيلُ

    So delight in your bonds, and know they are necklaces

    Made for the virtuous, with great deeds

  22. واحمدْ إلهَك واسألهُ سلامَتَها

    واقبلْ فإن قليلَ الحبّ مقبولُ

    Thank your God, ask Him for her safety

    Accept, for little love is accepted

  23. ولا تُحرّمْ على الفتيان مُتعتَها

    فليس في الفتْكِ تحريمٌ وتحليلُ

    Do not forbid the lads her pleasures

    For in gallantry there is no taboo or permit

  24. لا تبخلن بمالٍ لستَ مالكَه

    فلا يفُوتَنك تبخيلٌ وتضليلُ

    Do not be stingy with wealth you do not own

    Lest you miss generosity and guidance

  25. ولا تُكلّف فتىً أودى بعُذرتها

    عقلاً فإنَّ دم الأستاهِ مطلُولُ

    Do not task a lad, destroying his innocence

    Verily the blood of the meek is ransomed

  26. وما يريدُ بُغاةُ النيكِ من رجلٍ

    فيما أتى لطريق النيكِ تسهيلُ

    What the wicked want from a man

    To facilitate the path of virtue

  27. ألم تُسبّلْ سبيلاً لا عُدولَ بها

    عما يُحبُّون والخيراتُ تسبيلُ

    Did you not pave a path from which she does not deviate

    From what they love, though virtues pave the way?

  28. ولا تَغاضبْ لتسفيلِ القريض بها

    فكلُّ ما لقيتْ بالأمس تَسفيلُ

    Do not be angry at degrading poetry about her

    All she faced yesterday was degradation

  29. ما زال يحرثُ منها النيكُ أسفلها

    والنيكُ يحرث ما لا يحرثُ البيلُ

    The virtuous continues to plough her depths

    While the virtuous ploughs what the spade cannot

  30. لا تمتعِض للتي صاحتْ قوابلُها

    قد التقتْ دجلةُ العوراءُ والنيلُ

    Be not disgusted that her midwives have met

    The licentious Tigris met the Nile

  31. واعدد لها سبعةً أو تسعةً كَملا

    يقدمْ عليك دهينُ الرأسِ مكحولُ

    Prepare seven or nine camels for her

    With a fat foolish leader

  32. يا ليت شعري وعِلمُ الغيب محتجبٌ

    في بيتِ من ذلك المولودُ مكفولُ

    I wish I knew - but knowledge of the unseen is veiled

    In whose house lies the newborn, sponsored

  33. في بيتها والذي حجَّ الحجيجُ له

    وهل جنى الغيّ عن جانيه معدولُ

    In her house, by the One the pilgrims perform Hajj for

    Can the rain be diverted from the clouds that sent it?

  34. كأنني بك قد سوئِلت حينئذٍ

    فقلتَ قيْلاً سديداً دُونَه القيلُ

    It is as if I see you being asked then

    Speaking truth, though lies surround it

  35. جرَّ الصبيُّ الذي كانت تُناغِمُهُ

    لنا صبيّاً وللتنزيلِ تأويلُ

    The boy she sang to crawled

    To us a boy, and reading has its interpretation

  36. تحضَّنتْ خُلَّتي عُوداً فحضَّنها

    طفلاً أتاها وفي الأطفال تطفيلُ

    My intimate hugged a rod, so she hugged

    A child who came while children spread

  37. يأتونَ لم يدعُهُم داعٍ سوى كمرٍ

    لها حقائقُ أولاها الأباطيلُ

    They come though none called but a grapevine

    With truths, the first of which are falsehoods

  38. أما لقد أحسنَ استدعاءَ حامِلهِ

    طفلٌ على بطنِ أمِّ الطفل محمولُ

    But how excellent she called the carrier

    A child borne on the belly of the child's mother

  39. طفلٌ أراد وصيفاً كيّساً فبكى

    حتى أتاهُ مليحُ القدِّ مجدولُ

    A child who wanted a wise wetnurse, so he cried

    Until the pretty-faced one with braided hair came

  40. إذا ترعرعَ فهْو الدهرَ هِمَّتُهُ

    وفي يديهِ إلى الأبياتِ منقولُ

    When he grows, his ambition will be the ages

    And verses will be carried in his hands

  41. كأنني بكَ والخلّانُ يومئذٍ

    يُهنِّئونكَ جيلاً بعده جيلُ

    It is as if I see you, and the tattooers then

    Congratulate you, generations after generations

  42. وإنني مُسلفٌ إياكَ تهنئتي

    وللصنائع تعجيلٌ وتأجيلُ

    I owe you congratulations

    To skills belong advance and delay

  43. فقائلٌ لك قولاً لا أطوّلُهُ

    وفي الأقاويل تقصيرٌ وتطويلُ

    So one says to you words I will not prolong

    In speech lies abbreviation and prolonging

  44. قد كثَّر اللَّهُ فيها وهْي سالمةٌ

    والشملُ مجتمعٌ والحبلُ موصولُ

    May God proliferate in her, while she is safe

    And the family united, the womb fertilized

  45. فاحمدْ على نعمةِ التكثيرِ واهبها

    إذ لم يقعْ بدَلَ التكثيرِ تقليلُ

    Thank for the blessing of proliferation, its Giver

    When proliferation is not replaced by scarcity

  46. أعزِزْ عليَّ بأن سُرَّتْ بليلتها

    وأنت صبٌّ عميدُ القلب متبولُ

    Honor me that her night pleased her

    While you are patient, staunch of heart

  47. أليَّةً يا كنيَّ الفيلِ صادقةً

    لقد تحمَّلتَ ما لا يحملُ الفيلُ

    Truly, O tusked elephant, truthful

    You have endured what no elephant can endure

  48. كانت أفاعيلُ مما أنت كارهُهُ

    وشيَّعتها بمكروهٍ أقاويلُ

    Her deeds were of what you hate

    And you bade them farewell with hated words

  49. للَّهِ فتيانُ لهوٍ مالَ مائلُهُم

    إلى التعاليلِ والعيشُ التعاليلُ

    To God belong frivolous lads

    Whose inclinations are frivolities and living is frivolities

  50. والجاثليقُ مع الإنجيل يدرسُهُ

    كأن عثنُونَهُ الكشخانُ إنجيلُ

    The Orthodox priest studies the Bible

    As if its binding were the Bible

  51. يخال في فِتنِ اللاهي ضلالتَه

    وإنما فِتنُ الجهلِ الأضاليلُ

    He imagines in the sedition of the wanton his misguidance

    Though the seditions of ignorance are the misguidances
