قد حلفنا على الصفاء جميعاً

فاجتهدنا وذاك جهد المطيقِ

We have all sworn to be sincere

And so we made an effort, as much as we were able

فبأي الأحكام توجب تصدي

قك حتماً ولا ترى تصديقي

By what logic can you insist your word

Is definitive, while mine is unbelievable?

وبأي الأحكام قولك برها

ن وقولي من خُلَّبات البروق

By what logic can your word be correct

While mine is flawed, like flashes of lightning?

ليس في العدل أن تحكَّمَ في قو

لك فارجع إلى سواء الطريق

Justice does not mean you judge your own words

To be true, so return to the straight path

ما من الدعوتين إن ضفت دعوى

غير محتاجة إلى تحقيق

Neither claim needs proof

If you add a claim that requires no verification

ولنا إن رددتَ ما تدعيه

ردُّ ما تدّعيه ضيقاً بضيق

And if you reject what I claim

I can reject your claim, restriction upon restriction

ووصفت الذي يحق على الإخ

وان من رعيهم ذمام الصديق

I described what is right for people

As did the person who herds them like friends

ورأيت النفوس أيسر من خذ

ل صديق عند احتضار الحقوق

And I saw the souls as easier to take

Than a friend at the loss of rights

ولعمري لقد صدقت ولو قد

خِيضَ من دونه أجيج الحريق

By my life, you spoke truthfully, even if

Around it raged the flames of confusion

غير أن الطباع تستتبع المط

بوع في كل فسحة ومضيق

Except that dispositions follow

What is familiar in every ease and unease

حشمتي خلقة وليس من الحك

مة أن تستقيد للمخلوق

My temperance is innate and it is not wise

That you take the created being as your guide
