I saw you find no sweetness in the taste of a thing
Unless it be flavored with the taste of bounty.
And whatever joy I gave was dearer to you
Than the excellence of praise.
So what is the use of my exhausting myself
To grind my mind with the millstone of eulogy?
But I shall freely cast the handful of lavender,
Though you are rich enough without reward.
