اسْعَدْ بعيد أخي نُسْكٍ وإسلامِ

وعيدِ لهوٍ طليق الوجهِ بسَّامِ

Rejoice, O my dear brother of chastity and Islam

And holiday of frivolity with a smiling face

عيدان أضحى ونوروزٌ كأنهما

يومَا فعالِك من بؤسٍ وإنعامِ

Eid and New Year are as if

They are days of your deeds of misery and favor

من ناصحٍ بالذي تحيى النفوسُ به

وحائلٍ بين أرواحٍ وأجسامِ

Of an advisor whose spirit lives by it

And a barrier between souls and bodies

كذاك يوماكَ يومٌ سيْبُهُ دِيَمٌ

على العُفاة ويومٌ سَيْفهُ دامي

Thus are your days, a day its sword is bloody

Against the wicked, and a day its sword is bloody

لله أضحى ونيروزٌ لبستهما

على عفافٍ وجُودٍ غيرِ إلمامِ

For God, Eid and New Year wore them

On chastity and generosity without immoderation

أضْحتْ يمينُك في النَوْروز فائضةً

بالمال لا الماء فيْضاً غيرَ إرهامِ

Your right hand was bountiful on New Year

With money, not water, without stinting

لَهَوْتَ فيه بجد النَّفح واجتَنَبتْ

دعابةَ النضح نفسٌ همُّها سامي

You sported earnestly, shunning

Jest of sprinkling, a soul whose concern is sublime

ثم انصرفْتَ إلى الأضحى وسُنَّته

فأي مِطعانِ لباتٍ ومِطعامِ

Then you turned to Eid and its tradition

What slaughtered sheep, what banquet!

ألحمتنا الكُومَ فيه فألُ مارِقةٍ

ستُلحمُ الطيرَ منها أيَّ إلحامِ

We stuffed ourselves, so every bird

Will be stuffed by it, what stuffing!

لازلت تنحر في أمثاله أبداً

شتَّى نحائرِ أعداءٍ وأنعامِ

You keep slaughtering the likes of them forever

Diverse sacrifices of enemies and favors

فَمِن لحامٍ تريباتٍ بلا وضمٍ

إلا الثرى ولحامٍ فوق أوضامِ

For some, missing carcasses without gathering

Except the ground, and some over bones

فِعْلَ امرئٍ غير ظَلَّام لمُنصِفهِ

للظالمين وللأموالِ ظلَّامِ

A man's deed but not darkness for the equitable

For the wrongdoers and the money, darkness

فكفُّهُ كفُّ تقبيلٍ يُفازُ به

ووجهُه وجهُ إجلالٍ وإكرامِ

So his palm is a palm of kissing, winning it

And his face a face of veneration and honor

كأنّه شمسُ إصحاء وحاشَ له

من أن يُقاسَ إليه بدْرُ إعتامِ

As if he is a healing sun, God forbid

That he be compared to an eclipsing moon

فيه بشاشة وصّالٍ ورونقُهُ

وفيه إن راب ريبٌ حَدُّ صرّامِ

In him is the grace of a reconciler and his elegance

And in him, if doubtful, there is a stern censor

لا تَغْتَرر بحياء فيه من شرسٍ

فالماءُ في كُل عَضْبِ الغرب صَمْصامِ

Be not fooled by shyness in him from a fierceness

For water in the entire west is growling

وزيرُ سِلم وحَرْبٍ لا كفاءَ له

ما زال حَمَّال أرماحٍ وأقلامِ

Minister of peace and war, matchless

Always bearing spears and pens

إذا ارتأى الرأي في خَطْبٍ أُتيحَ له

فيه السدادُ بفكرٍ أو بإلهامِ

If he saw valid counsel in an affair facilitated for him

In it is propriety with thought or inspiration

فلم يَهِمْ بين إنكارٍ ومعرفةٍ

ولم يخِم بين إحجام وإقدامِ

So he did not care between objection and approval

And did not waver between abstention and venture

خبِّرهُ بالداء واسأله بحيلته

تُخْبَرْ وتَسْلَ أخا فهمٍ وإفهامِ

Ask him about the illness and his solution for it

You ask and ask a brother of understanding and expression

كم اشترى بكرى عينيه من سهرٍ

وباع في اللَّهِ لذَّاتٍ بآلامِ

How he bought with his eyes' insomnia from night vigils

And sold for God pleasures for pains

للَّهِ مُطروه ما أضحَوا لأنفسهِم

ولا له يومَ زاروه بِلُوّامِ

For God they visited him, not for themselves

And not for Him the day they visited with trays

آبوا بحظٍّ بلا إثم وكم صدروا

عن آخرين بحرمان وآثامِ

They came with a share without sin, and how they were satisfied

With depriving others, with sins and injustices

مُطَلَّبٌ بعطايا ما يُنهنهها

عذْل العواذِل طَلّابٌ بأوغامِ

Required to give gifts he does not deny

The rebuke of the chiding, asking for ugliness

مُعاوِدٌ نَقْضَ أوتارٍ وآونةً

مُعاودٌ عفوَ زلّاتٍ وأجرامِ

Repeating breaking strings, and once

Repeating forgiving sins and crimes

يُعْطي فيُنطقُ ذا الإفحام نائلُه

ويُفحم الفحلَ شِعراً أيّ إفحامِ

He gives so the confuter's obtainer utters

And confutes the stallion in verse, what confutation!

يغدو وقد حل عافوه بذي كرم

إدْلالُ سُؤَّاله إذلالُ غُرَّامِ

He rises and his pardon settled with one generous

His supplication's humbleness is lovers' humbleness

لا بل ترى لهمُ فيما حوت يدُهُ

وهو المحكَّم فيه حُكمَ حكَّامِ

Rather you see for them in what his hand contained

And he is the arbitrator in it, the judgment of judges

أخو سماح يمُتُّ الأبعدونَ به

حتى كأنّهمْ منَّوْا بأرْحامِ

A brother of lenience, even the farthest die for him

As if they grew with kinship

مستأنسين ببشرٍ منه آنسَهُم

من قبله بشرُ حُجّابٍ وخدّامِ

Feeling intimate due to his good tiding that intimated them

Before it, the good tiding of eunuchs and servants

ما استام بالحمدِ مُستامٌ فماكَسهُ

وهل يرَدُّ جوادٌ حُكْمَ مُسْتامِ

He is not blamed for praise, so why embarrass him?

And which steed turns away the reins' mastery?

ترى له في المساعي جدَّ مجتهِدٍ

لم يكْفهِ كُلُّ كُرَّام لِكُرَّامِ

You see his utmost endeavor of an assiduous

Not satisfied, every generous with a generous

ولو يشاء كفاهُ أنَّهُ رَجُلٌ

من بين أكرم أخوالٍ وأعمامِ

If he wished, it would suffice him that he is

Among the noblest of uncles and paternal uncles

لكنْ أبى بوفاءٍ من تُراثِهمُ

إلا نُشوراً لهم من بعد إرمامِ

But he refused except a resurrection for them after decay

He met Abul-Saqr in the army and his battalion

تلقى أبا الصقر في الجُلَّى وحُجْزتُه

مَقْسومةٌ بين أيدٍ خيرَ إقسامِ

Divided between hands, the best of divisions

Of a fearful, weak in authority, and needy

من خائفٍ وهْنَ سُلطانٍ وذي عَوَزٍ

قد أعصما بالمرجَّى أيَّ إعصامِ

Both parties made safe by hope, what safety!

Each group protected by him, then protected

كلا الفريقين منه ثمَّ مُعْتصم

بعُروة الأمنِ من خوفٍ وإعدامِ

By the security's handle from fear and death

An age whose ages God prohibited his state

دهرٌ نهى الدهر عن جيرانِ دولتِه

فأحرم الدهرُ فيها أيَّ إحرامِ

So the age made sacred in it any sanctity

A confidant to the people, a protector whose egg was broken

حانٍ على الناس حامٍ عُقرَ بيضتهم

لا تعدم الطَّول من حانٍ ومن حامِ

The height does not lack from a confidant or protector

The people competed in his days of rule

تنافس الناسُ في أيام دولته

فما يبيعون أياماً بأعوامِ

They do not sell days for years

God does not remove days of his that gathered

لا يبعد اللَّهُ أياماً له جمعتْ

إلى سكونِ ليالٍ أُنسَ أيامِ

To the stillness of nights, intimate days

He does not annul a condition and ruin it

يفدي أبا الصقرِ قومٌ دون فديتِه

كأن مُدَّاحَهُم عُبَّادُ أصنامِ

Except to annul you in it and conclude it

How much love the money meets among you

ما همَّ بالدينِ والدنيا فنالَهُما

إلا قريعُكُمُ يا آل همَّامِ

From one enamored in the path of glory, enrichment

I swear by God, you never woke up to malice

رأيت أشرافَ خلقِ الله قد جُعلوا

للناس هاماً وأنتم أعينُ الهامِ

And were not found short of the sublime

The making of your hands' deeds and their events

أنتم نجومُ سماءٍ لا أُفول لها

وتلك أشرفُ من نيرانِ أعلامِ

So the worker and the worked became of composition and determination

You do not stop consoling from anguish

ما ينقض الدهرُ من حالٍ ويُبرمها

إلا بنقضٍ لكم فيه وإبرامِ

And do not wake from taking to morsels

Branded with a branding

كم من غرامٍ يُلاقي المالُ بينكُم

من غارمٍ في سبيل المجد غنَّامِ

Like flints in the hands of unskilled

Horses, if saddled or bridled for you

أقسمتُ بالله ما استيقظتُمُ لِخناً

ولا وُجدتم عن العليا بنوّامِ

The mighty is subdued to saddling and bridling

Until, when they carried you in your armor

ضاهت صنائعُ أيديكم وقائعَها

فأصبحتْ ذات إنجادٍ وإتهامِ

They walked there with lions and buffaloes

As if their chests and the horsehair are slumbering

ما تفترُونَ عن التنفيسِ عن كظم

ولا تُفيقون عن أخذٍ بأكظامِ

A night over which is a starry sky

Until when the horsehair disappears in its thrusts

مُسوّمين على جُردٍ مسومةٍ

مثل القداحِ بأيدي غيرِ أبرامِ

It returns there a sky of star clusters

And everything fears you, so it dressed in a burrow

خيلٌ إذا أُسرجت أو أُلجمت لكُمُ

ذلَّ العزيزُ لإسراجٍ وإلجامِ

As if its belly contains a letter of assimilation

You reached with quick paces, hastening

حتى إذا حملتكُم في وشيجكُمُ

سارت هناك بآسادٍ وآجامِ

To the holy war, outweighing dreams

The existence of hands as if God created them

كأن قسطلها والزرقُ ناجمةٌ

ليلٌ عليه سماءٌ ذاتُ إنجامِ

From every smiling lightning downpour

You do not lack extending oath-bound right hands

حتى إذا الزرقُ غابت في مطاعِنها

عادت هناك سماء ذات إثجامِ

Harm and benefit, and preceding steps

You rise and the Benefactor, your benefit

وخافكُم كل شيءٍ فاكتسى نفقاً

كأنه في حشاهُ حرف إدغامِ

Though many a people's Benefactor is not their benefit

Your hands stretched over the people and did not wrong

سُدتم بخفَّةِ أقدامٍ مُسارعة

إلى الكرائه في رُجحان أحلامِ

With the excellent length of steps to steps

So right did not complain of stinginess from you

وجود أيدٍ كأن الله أنشأها

من كلِّ غيث ضَحوكِ البرق زمزامِ

And justice did not complain of crooked rulings

For you before the judgment is binding with your argument

لا تعدموا بسط أيمانٍ مضمّنةٍ

ضرّاً ونفعاً ولا تقديمَ أقدامِ

Upon the opponents, and pardoning after binding

The generous and Isma'il are among them

تغدون والمنعمُ المِنعامُ مُنعمُكم

ورُبَّ مُنعِم قوم غيرُ مِنعامِ

Elevated among flags in every case

Al-Muwaffaq is absent, his absence sufficed him

طالتْ على الناسِ أيديكم وما ظلمتْ

ببارعِ الطول قمقامٍ لقمقامِ

So he did not meet him among the blamers and the blamed

He kept since he blocked the emergencies' gap with it

فما اشتكى الفضلُ منكم لؤمَ مقدرةٍ

ولا شكى العدلُ منكم جور أحكامِ

Shooting opportunities from it, every shooter

For there is no barging in when they are comfortable

لكم لدى الحُكم إلزامٌ بحُجَّتكم

على الخصومِ وصفحٌ بعد إلزامِ

And no comfort for him at the time of barging

And no recklessness in it when abstaining

أضحى الكرامُ وإسماعيل بينهمُ

في كل حالٍ مُعلّىً بين أزلامِ

And no apprehension in it when abstaining

He erected the matters he was put in charge of

غاب الموفَّقُ واستكفاه غيبتَهُ

فلم يصادفه بين الذمِّ والذامِ

On foundations of perfection and consolidation

With ample capacity and a breast that never ceased to be

ما زال مذ سُدَّ ثغر الحادثات به

يرمي الفرائصَ منه أيُّما رامي

In it springs of opinion without morasses

Those springs whose resources never ceased

إذ لا تقحُّم في حين الأناة لهم

ولا أناةَ له في حين إقحامِ

In them are maladies, and in them are cures of maladies

And a sleeper said, I have attained the goal

ولا تهوُّرَ فيه عند ملتزمٍ

ولا تهيّبَ فيه عند إحجامِ

Forgive me, I told him ravings of dreams

Leave what you wish, you will never see

شادَ الأمورَ التي ولاه بنيتها

على قواعد إتقان وإحكامِ

Low like high, or backwards like forwards

Meet Abul-Saqr with his complaint grumbling

برحب ذرعٍ وصدرٍ لم يزل بلداً

فيه ينابيعُ رأي غيرُ أسدامِ

When a grumbler grumbles to a grumbler

And the people avoid him except he is a man

تلك الينابيعُ ما زالت موارِدُها

فيها سقامٌ وفيها برءُ أسقامِ

Who does not know the KH between B and L

And submit Abul-Saqr to Islam, preventing him

ونائم قال قد أدركتُ غايته

عفواً فقلت له أضغاث أحلامِ

The prevention of one who does not see the Islam of Islam

He keeps being a mine of good and good deed

دع عنك ما تتمنى لن ترى أبداً

سِفلاً كعُلوٍ ولا خَلفاً كقُدَّامِ

With benefits of a Giver and a Learned

You are whom he awaits every day

تلقى أبا الصقرِ ضرغاماً بشِكَّتِه

إذا تبسَّل ضِرغامٌ لضرغامِ

And the best of his awaited in the year

Your praise almost protected you from people's knowledge

واجتبى الناس إلا أنه رجل

لا يعرفُ الخاء بين الباء واللامِ

That your generosity is without fervor and infatuation

O you who act generously, you readied its ship

واسلمْ أبا الصقرِ للإسلام تمنعهُ

منعَ امرئٍ لا يرى إسلامَ إسلامِ

A launch so the day of glooms followed it

And let your generosity of your generous ancestors survive

ما زال معدنَ معروفٍ ومعرفةٍ

له فوائدُ وهَّابٍ وعلّامِ

For a servant owned by you, wronged by injustice

أنت الذي غدهُ في اليوم منتظرٌ

وخيرُ قابله المنظورُ في العامِ

قد كاد يحميكَ حمدَ الناسِ علمَهُمُ

بأن جُودك عن وجدٍ وإغرامِ

يا مُعمِلَ الجود قد أنضيت مركبه

نضاً فأعقبه منه يومَ أجمامِ

وليُبقِ جودك من جَدواك باقيةً

لخادم لك محقوقٍ بإخدامِ
