1. من كان يبكي الشبابَ من جَزعٍ

    فلستُ أبكي عليه من جزعِ

    Whoever weeps for lost youth out of grief

    I do not weep for it out of grief

  2. لأن وجهي بقبح صورته

    ما زال لي كالمشيب والصَّلعِ

    For my face in its ugly form

    Remains for me like gray hair and baldness

  3. أشبَّ ما كنتُ قطُّ أهرمَ ما

    كنتُ فسبحان خالَقِ البدع

    I have never been as old as I am now

    So glory be to the Creator of wonders

  4. إذا أخذتُ المرآة أسْلفني

    وجهي وما مُتُّ هول مطَّلعي

    When I look in the mirror it asks me

    My face, and I have not died, when will I die?

  5. شُغِفْتُ بالخرَّد الحِسان وما

    يصلحُ وجهي إلا لذي ورع

    I am fascinated by beautiful little girls, yet

    My face is not suitable, except for one devout

  6. كي يعبدَ اللَه في الفلاة ولا

    يشهدَ فيه مشاهد الجُمع

    That he may worship God in solitude and not

    Witness in it the spectacles of the crowd
