أيا غُرَّة العلْيَا ويا عينَها اليمنى

ويا صفوة الدنيا ويا حاصل المَعْنَى

O proud beauty with charming eyes,

Quintessence of life and essence of meaning,

أأحييتَني بالأمس ثم تُميتني

برفضي وإقصائي وحقِّيَ أن أُدْنَى

Did you bring me to life yesterday only to kill me today

By rejecting and excluding me when I deserve to be drawn near?

ولو أنني أحييت ميتاً عشقتُه

لحسن الذي أثّرتُ فيه من الحسنى

Had I revived a beloved dead man,

I would have done so for the goodness I inspired in him.

ألا يعشق المِفضالُ ميتاً أعاشهُ

وأجناه من معروفه الحلوِ ما أَجْنى

Does not the grateful man love the dead one he revived,

And saved from his kindness, as sweet as he could make it?

أقول لقوم أوعدوا منك نَبْوةً

وما خِلتُني أُبلى بذاك ولا أُمْنَى

I say to people who promised you prophecy from me

Yet I have not claimed that nor wished it,

أأبقى على عهدي وينكث قاسم

وتفنى أياديه وشكريَ لا يفنى

Shall I keep my pledge while Qasim breaks his

And his hands perish while my gratitude does not?

كذبتم ومُعْطيه العلا إنَّ عزمه

على العدل والإحسان لَلْعزمُ لا يُثْنَى

You lie! The giver of high station, his resolve

Is for justice and beneficence, it is unbending.

أقاسمُ لو نوفيك ما أنت أهله

لأصبحتَ لا تُسمى لدنيا ولا تُكْنى

O Qasim, if I fulfilled what you deserve,

You would no longer be named in this world at all,

ولم تُدْعَ إلا ماجداً وابن ماجدٍ

وحُقَّ لك الأَسْنى من الوصف فالأسنى

And would only be called Majid and son of Majid.

The finest description suits you, and more so the finest.

وإن كنتَ مأمولاً تناسى حفاظُه

نصيبي وقد أغنى سواي وقد أقنى

And if you are hoped for, your protector forgets

My share, though he enriches others and makes them rich.

وأبعدني إبعادَ جاني عظيمةٍ

وقد كنت أُستدعَى زماناً وأُسْتدنَى

And he excludes me with the exclusion of a great crime

While once I used to be summoned and brought near,

أيحجبُ عني عِشرةً قد ومِقْتُها

فشوقي إليها شوق قيس إلى لُبْنى

Does he veil from me a company I intensely love

With the love Qays had for Layla?

نعم أنا ممنوعُ الذي لست كفؤَه

أتمنعني قُوتي من العَرَضِ الأدنى

Yes, I am forbidden what I am unfit for.

Does my strength prevent me from the lowest position?

نشدتكُمُ أن تظلموني وتُسكِنوا

جوى الحقد أضلاعاً على حبِّكم تُحْنَى

I implore you not to wrong me, and calm

The fervor of hatred in your hearts that bend toward your love,

أَذو آلةٍ فاستخدِموني لآلتي

بقُوتيَ أوْ لا فارزُقوني مع الزَّمْنى

Make me a tool and use me for my skills,

Or not, then grant me sustenance over time.

وإني لأرجو الفَوْزتين ولم تزل

أياديكُمُ تَتْرى على المجتدِي مَثنى

I still hope for success while your hands

Are folded over the striving applicant.

فلا برحتْ سبَّابةٌ تستغيثكم

ولا خِنْصَرٌ من شاكرٍ بكُمُ تُثْنى

An ungrateful critic has not ceased imploring you

Nor a slanderer thanking you with praise.

ولا زلتُمُ يأوي إلى حُجُراتكم

أخو حادثٍ أنحَى وذو زمن أخْنَى

You still shelter in your rooms

A frowning newcomer and one whose time has passed.

ألا يا عبادَ اللَّهِ ما بال حالة

أعالجها تَدْوَى بأدوية المضنى

O servants of God, what is wrong with a situation

I could treat with the remedies of care?

أأشقى بمن لو قلت يا خيرَ من مشى

على الأرض ما استثنى ضميريَ مُسْتَثْنَى

Am I misfortunate for one who, if I said is the best to walk

The earth, my conscience would take no exception?

أعيذكُمُ من جَوْر من جارَ حكمُه

فطائفةً أشْكَى وطائفةً أَغنى

I seek refuge from the tyranny of one whose rule

Makes me complain of one group and makes rich another.

هَبوني امرأً لا حظَّ فيه لمجتَنٍ

أمَا في اصطناع العُرْف مكرُمةٌ تبنى

Grant me a man with no luck among the perverse,

While among the decent is a revered honor.

عَفاءٌ على الدنيا إذا ساء رأيكم

فما هي بالدار الدَّميثة للسُّكنى

Indifferent to the world if you disapprove,

It is no settled abode for dwelling.
