1. يا ليت شعري لو سئلت وقد

    أنشدت مدحي فيك من سمِعَهْ

    Oh, how I wish I had asked, after

    Reciting my praises of you, whoever heard it

  2. ماذا أثبت عليه قائله

    هل كنت تلقى في الجواب سِعَهْ

    What proof I presented for what I said

    Would you find latitude in answering?

  3. كلّا لأنك إن صدقت فقد

    أقررت أنك أرضَعُ الرَضَعَهْ

    No, because if you were truthful then you

    Would have acknowledged that you nurse infants

  4. ومتى كذبت فتلك شرهما

    والإفك يجمع مأثماً وضعه

    And if you lied that would be worse

    Lies combine sin and disgrace

  5. وإن استرحت إلى السكوت فما

    لك فيه من لؤم الكرام دعه

    And if you took refuge in silence, it would not

    Befit your noble nature, leave it

  6. أتراك توهمهم إذا سألوا

    فسكت أمراً لا تُلام معه

    Do you want them to assume, if they ask

    And you stay silent, it's beyond reproach?

  7. كلّا ولكن يعلمون معاً

    أن قد سلكت مسالك الخدعه

    No, they know together

    That you have taken the path of deceit

  8. كتم اللسان عليك فاستمعت

    فطنٌ لما جمجمت مستمعه

    Holding your tongue, you listened

    Keenly to my murmuring ear

  9. وكذا عقول ذوي العقول على

    أسرار أهل الجهل مطَّلعه

    Just so, reasonable minds are focused

    On the secrets of the ignorant

  10. قد كنت تبت من الهجاء فإن

    شاء اللئام أعدتها جَذَعه

    You had given up satire, but if

    Scoundrels desired, you brought it back to life
