1. حيّ المعاهدَ والمنازلْ

    المقفراتِ بل الأواهلْ

    The homes and dwellings once full of tranquility

    Are now empty and desolate

  2. بُدِّلنَ آراماً خوا

    ذلَ بعدَ آرامٍ خواذلْ

    Your passion disturbed me with questions

    Yet would not wait for an answer

  3. حرَّكنَ شجْوك للسؤا

    لِ وما أحَرْنَ جوابَ سائلْ

    So send them tears of blood

    And stop them with pleas of the soul

  4. فابعثْ بهنّ من الدمو

    عِ وقِفْ بهن من الرواحلْ

    Match the radiant with the radiant

    And the alluring with the alluring

  5. وسلِ الملائحَ بالملا

    ئِحِ والعطابلَ بالعطابِلْ

    Those who resembled straight, erect stalks

    Perfect in beauty without fault

  6. اللائي أشْبَهنَ الغصو

    نَ المستقيماتِ الموائلْ

    Adorned with innate, molded ornament

    Not made by the work of a craftsman's hands

  7. وكَملْنَ كلَّ وسامةٍ

    في غير أسنانٍ كواملْ

    When they remove their jewellery

    They are no less adorned by their graces

  8. حُلّين حَلياً خِلقةً

    مجبولة لا نحلَ ناحلْ

    And when they walk touching

    Those idols and corresponding

  9. فإذا عطلْن من الحُلْي

    ي فلسْن منه بالعواطلْ

    Their breasts provoke jealousy

    When they touch those idols

  10. وإذا غدونَ يمِسْن في

    تلك الغلائِل والمراسلْ

    And when they wear anklets

    They belie the name of anklets

  11. غارت عليهن الثُّديْ

    يُ هناك من مس الغلائلْ

    Their swaying scarcely shakes them

    As they are solid, not swinging

  12. وإذا لبسْنَ خلاخِلاً

    كذَّبْن أسماء الخلاخلْ

    Yet they yearn for those coquettes

    With intense, passionate yearning

  13. تأبى تخلخلَهُنَّ أسْ

    وُقُ مُرجحنّاتٍ بخادلْ

    Those hearts have been hardened

    And those hands made gentle

  14. لكنهنّ بخائِلٌ

    لهْفي على تلكَ البخائلْ

    I am preoccupied with loving them

    And forget her who is called a distraction

  15. قد غُلِّظتْ تلك القلو

    بُ ولُطّفتْ تلك الأناملْ

    An uncouth woman who when she sees young men

    Becomes ugly though she was beautiful

  16. لي شاغلٌ في حبهنْ

    نَ عن التي تدعى بشاغلْ

    Sometimes she acts insane

    So you see her virtues as faults

  17. بظراء تُمسخُ لامُها

    راءً إذا رأتِ الفياشِلْ

    How strange is the coolness of her singing

    And the wretchedness of her song

  18. ولربما جُنَّتْ لها

    فترى عواليها سوافلْ

    Why is it not like the warbling

    That excites and kindles the joints?

  19. عجباً لبردِ غنائها

    وغناؤها ثُكْلُ الثواكلْ

    Why did she not refine what was created

    For the makers of fine combs?

  20. ما باله كالزمهري

    رِ مُهيّجاً وجَعَ المفاصلْ

    Rather she cut the tresses that were made

    For the bee-gums hived with bees

  21. هلّا استحرَّ لأنه

    ثكلٌ وللشّبَقِ المُدَاخلْ

    What means will he waste

    Wooing her with messages and poems?

  22. حُلقتْ ذوائبُها التي

    خُلقت لصُنَّاع المناخِلْ

    But his lust only loves

    Those who are already pregnant

  23. بل لحيةُ الرجلِ الذي

    أضحى بها جَمَّ البلابلْ

    She swore never to be counted

    Among the chaste and virtuous

  24. ماذا يُضيعُ من الوسا

    ئِلِ في هواها والرسائلْ

    Do you think, o Salama, you will be safe

    If counted among the deviant?

  25. لكن شهوته اللِّبا

    ءُ فما يُحبُّ سوى الحواملْ

    You who have endured for so long

    What no other lover could bear?

  26. وهي التي قد أقسمتْ

    أن لا تُعَدَّ مع الحوائلْ

    You were short but became

    Taller than the tallest through them

  27. أتراك تسلمُ يا سلا

    مةُ أن تكون من الثيَاتلْ

    Do not be alone with a distraction

    Lest she be ready for you

  28. وقد احتملْتَ بها قرو

    ناً لا ينوء بهنّ حاملْ

    She whom you are infatuated with

    Neglects religious duties and supererogatory prayers

  29. كنْتَ القصيرَ فقد غدوْ

    تَ بطولهنّ من الأطاولْ

    They say she is promiscuous

    But I say she is only flirtatious

  30. لا تَخْلونَ بشاغلٍ

    حتى تُعِدَّ لها قوابلْ

    But I see you love her

    With the love of problems for problems

  31. إن التي عُلّقْتَها

    تَزْنِي الفرائضَ والنوافلْ

    I have made her like you in the coolness of her tools

    Or in the heat of her shallowness

  32. قالوا تُعاهِرُ في الدرو

    بِ فقلتُ كلا بل تُعاظلْ

    How much fault I have concealed

    That appeared in you but was hidden

  33. لكن أراك تُحِبُّها

    حُبَّ المُشاكلِ للمشاكلْ

    I stood up to adversaries for you

    With the stance of a disputant engaging in debate

  34. أشْبهتها في بردِ أع

    لاها أو في حَرّ الأسافلْ

    They said your friend is a master

    Obvious in wisdom, not stagnant

  35. كم قد سترْتُ معايباً

    لمعتْ بها فيكَ المخائلْ

    Evidence grew against you

    More conspicuous than pounding hail

  36. ووقفتُ دونك للخصو

    مِ بموقفِ الخَصْم المُجادلْ

    And many a fault became clear

    Through evidence and proofs

  37. قالوا صديقك سيدٌ

    بادي النباهةِ غيرُ خاملْ

    They spoke truly and did not lie against you

    And I did not dispute or contend

  38. نمَّتْ بذاك شواهدٌ

    فيه أنمُّ من الجلاجلْ

    I know well you are not

    Faulted except as a fighter in battle

  39. ولربَّ عيبٍ قد تَبَيْ

    يَنَ بالشواهدِ والدلائلْ

    You still remain easy prey

    Alone under the arches

  40. صدقُوا وما كذبوا عليْ

    ك فلم أناضح أو أُناضلْ

    And if you pretend to be devout with a whore

    You have purposes known to her habitués

  41. إني لأعلم أنك ال

    مطعونُ في غيرِ المقاتلْ

    You pretend to deceive us but your matter is clear

    With obvious marks

  42. ما إنْ تزال فريسةً

    في خَلْوةٍ تحت الكلاكلْ

    You turned from drum to lute

    And you are but a drum yourself

  43. وإن استترتَ بقحبةٍ

    لك عند ناكتها طوائلْ

    Would that you were a lute! You are

    Of the vile outcasts

  44. أنشأتَ تَخدَعُنا وأمْ

    رُكَ بيّنٌ بادي الشَّواكلْ

    And you dyed your effeminacy with pretence

    While immorality flourishes unchecked

  45. وعدلتَ من طبلٍ إلى عو

    دٍ وأنت من الطوابلْ

    Like her who exposes her belly

    While the udder is full

  46. بل ليتَ كنتَ من الطوا

    بِل أنت من سَقْط الزَّواملْ

    The lovers peel off their clothes

    While you are an impudent wretch

  47. وخضبْتَ خُنْثَك بالتغزْ

    زُلِ والبغاءُ هناك ناصلُ

    How can they join with you - never!

    Even if they remained without a companion

  48. مثل التي أضحت تكا

    تمُ حَملها والضَّرعُ حافلْ

    You who surpassed mankind

    In ugliness, with feet distorted and twisted

  49. تتنحَّلُ المتعشِّقا

    تِ وأنت بغَّاءٌ حُلاحِلْ

    And you penetrate without covering

    Either the singing girls or the beardless boys

  50. أنَّى يصلنك لا وصلْ

    نَ ولو بقين بلا مُواصِلْ

    So why does passion grant

    Only the beautiful, the flatterers?

  51. أنت الذي فاق الورى

    في القُبح من حافٍ وناعلْ

    They witnessed you riding

    Camels with ornate, embroidered coverings

  52. وتُناك غيرَ مُساترٍ

    للغانيات ولا مخاتلْ

    Seeking to correct your deviation

    Like a drunken man tilting

  53. فعلامَ يمنحنَ الهوى

    غيرَ الجميل ولا المجاملْ

    So they saw in you a horseman

    Who attacks in war but does not fight

  54. ولقد شهدنك راكباً

    فوق الغِلاظ من الغراملْ

    I see your singing in gatherings

    Is like your reputation in assemblies

  55. تبغي بها تقويمَ أيْ

    رِك وهو كالسكران مائلْ

    I see you prancing there

    Deeming yourself a stallion

  56. فبصُرْن فيك بفارسٍ

    يغْشى الحروبَ ولا يُقاتلْ

    I see you as a horseman

    When in truth you are a footman there

  57. وأرى غِناءك في المجا

    لسِ مثلَ ذكرك في المحافلْ

    I see you highly placed

    When in truth you are lowly there

  58. وأراك فيه ناهقاً

    وتظنّ أنك فيه صاهلْ

    I see you doing good

    Considered the most astray of workers

  59. وتُراكَ فيه فارساً

    والحق أنك فيه راجلْ

    You have taken care of an old crone's whelps

    Born without a father

  60. وتُراكَ فيه عالياً

    والحق أنك فيه سافلْ

    She birthed them without your presence

    O man of merit and sublime traits

  61. وأراكَ تعملُ صالحاً

    تُعتدُّ فيه أضلَّ عامِلْ

    So too the generous son of the generous

    Supports the orphans of the tribes

  62. أكفلْتَ نَغْلَي شيخةٍ

    ولدتهما من غيرِ طائلْ

    Go away! After her you are

    A cave for the orphaned and the widowed

  63. ولدتْهُما من غيرِ شي

    خِك ذي الفضائل والفواضلْ

    I swear you are an ignoramus

    And the practitioner of this is an ignoramus

  64. وكذا الكريمُ ابنُ الكرا

    مِ يعولُ أيتامَ القبائلْ

    Do you support, woe to you, brothers

    Not of your father while oblivious?

  65. اذهبْ فإنك بعدَها

    كهفُ اليتامَى والأراملْ

    I am filled with every suspicion

    By your feminine traits

  66. أقسمتُ أنك جاهلٌ

    والمُمتري في ذاك جاهلْ

    Your elder was courageous

    A hero, so why are you not valiant?

  67. أتعولُ ويحك إخوةً

    لا من أبيك وأنت غافلْ

    I reckon your mother dressed up lies as truth

    And cheated the wretched elder unawares

  68. ويُريبُني كلَّ الإرا

    بةِ منك تأنيثُ الشمائلْ

    Take it as a greeting extended

    To one who meets the sneezes of others with "God bless you"

  69. قد كان شيخُك باسلاً

    بطلاً فما لَكَ غيرُ باسلْ

    O crowd of fools and

    Rebels of darkened minds

  70. إني لأحسبُ أن أُمْ

    مَك لبَّستْ حقّاً بباطلْ

    I warned you before the shame

    That you now see in the tremors

  71. واغتالت الشيخَ الشقيْ

    يَ فقيَّرتْه وهْو غافلْ

  72. خذها إليك تحيةً

    تَلقى المعاطس بالجنادلْ

  73. يا معشرَ السفهاءِ وال

    متمردين ذَوي المجاهلْ

  74. أنذرتكم قبل الخسو

    فِ بما ترون من الزلازلْ
