The complaining reproacher's speech has become muted
In answering those worn out covenants
O you, my bare and harsh master
With a sword of aloofness, yet you carry no shield
How long will we suffer from our misdeeds
And reproaches in vexing affairs
You have never spared me from your strange feats
Nor from your fierce battles
You maneuver the rain in its lightning
And at times in its roaring clashes
I have become in mourning due to your refusal of me
And from what you have granted me in happiness
My morals have certainly become diverse, so leave renewals
And return us to confusion
Those that have always been adorned with nothing
But the disgracing, nor the cruelty
Those whose whispered conversation
Is provision for the caravan of gentle words
Days of your happiness whose laughters
Outdo their frowns in succession
Do not replace what hopes I have attained
With the delusions of fears
O you who guides the travelers in the dark
O you who illuminates in the gloom
I swore by your kindness when you see
The sun-like splendor of creation from me
And this oath is no falsehood
Among the oaths of your subservient slave
If I had not lived by your favors
Of standing by me or imprisonment
Your mention would have no standing with me
When you are absent for intimacy
Do not think I have substituted you with delusions
You suffice me from the selves
By God I would never sell
Seeing that majesty and holiness for delusions
If I did that, then I
Would be selling the invaluable for worthless
Is not a glance I glanced at you
Repelling the luck of the sinister
Yes, by my life, so how can the deception
Of the fraudulent, the stingy, hope to cheat me
Do not make me, when I see a purpose
That the probing of suspicions play in
I am content with half my lifespan with your
Encounters, nay a quarter of it, nay a fifth
Rather, every cycle cycled by someone
And no contentment without the sixth that follows
The share of my eyes from you in the seventh of life
Is contentment for me, not for the wretched misfortune
So grant it, delighting me with benevolence
And you have excelled the faces of the frowning
For if God has granted the frowning sustenance
He has granted it to the gentle
You remain forcibly seizing
Misfortunes in an impenetrability from their slyness
Your generosity lifts you from their treasures
Above the ravenous, wretched bandits
Those with tired eyes, not an inflammation
Those with languid eyelids, not drowsiness
Those brought up in luxury, not in want
Gazelles in the meadows of palaces, not filth
O mountain of sanctuary and fruit!
Will you not protect me from your prowling beasts
I have a party that continues to trample me
Wretchedly with you – misery upon the wretched party!
They are not like the lions of evil – openly
Violent, but like the sneaky fox
If not for my reverence of you I would have cast them
Away from my words with evident falsehoods
Those whose scent still leaves
The smell of rotten upon the noses like an extinguished wick
And my poetry is an army I have mobilized its raid
Everywhere so which land did it not raid
And how many times have the enemies attacked me with ignorance
That recoiled upon their heads and I did not recoil
Let not the ignorant slander me – in vain
For I have durable, thick-skinned shields
Leave me to establish them into a group that failed
Against them – and which recalcitrant one have I not established
With a diaspora whose locations are emulated
By a thousand Chinas and a thousand Andalusias
If the stallion of the clan of Udus was content
The stallion of the clan of Udus would submit
You are the son of Chosroes and the lineage of Rome
Has not diverged in its ancestry from the Persians
O King, if you are looking at lineage, it is
Between the son of Bahram and the son of Theophilos
Below you is my opinion, for its stars
In the dark gloom are obscured
Below you is my determination, for its pickaxes
When adversities stand for sitting
Your slave is a plant whose harvest is a favor
You are for the likes of him of the plants
So nurture him and guard his harvest – you will benefit from him
And protect him from the touch of an impure company
