أبكيتِني فبكيتُ

من غير ذنبٍ جنيْتُ

You made me weep, so I wept

Though I was blameless

وقلتِ لي امضِ عنّي

مُصاحَباً فمضيْتُ

And you told me to go away from you

So I went away, a companion

ولو أمرتِ بأنّي

أقضي الحياةَ قضَيتُ

And had you ordered that I

Spend my life, I would have spent it

أضعْتني فرعيتُ

وخُنتني فوفيتُ

You let me down, so I was raised up

And you betrayed me, yet I was faithful

أطعتِ فيَّ الأعادي

وكلّهُمْ قد عصيتُ

I obeyed you against my enemies

Yet I disobeyed them all

فكيف أصبحتِ غَضبَى

لمَّا رضاكِ أتيتُ

So why did you become angry with me

When I sought your favor

فاستضحكتْ ثم قالت

جُنِنْتَ قلتُ رَضَيْتُ

Then she smiled and said

You have gone mad, I said, I accept

قالت لعلَّ وِصالي

أبيتَ قلتُ أبيتُ

She said, perhaps you refused

To be with me, I said, I refused

قالت ثَكِلْتُ أبي إن

فَعَلْتَ إن بالَيْتُ

She said, may my father be bereaved if

You did that, surely I am confused

فلم تزل بيَ حتى

إلى هواها ارعويتُ

But she persisted with me until

I was bent toward her love
