    آداب صفو ما شابه رنقُ

    There were people who thought I was the epitome of literature

    And I was greatly esteemed and respected among them

  2. وكان لي بينهم وعندهمُ

    مضطرب واسع ومرتفقُ

    Until you met them and they saw

    You who observes so closely

  3. حتى إذا ما صحبتكم نظروا

    وأنتم من تلاحظ الحدق

    So they adopted your opinion and lost

    Their admiration for me; my nature became odious to them

  4. فقلدوا رأيكم فزهدهم

    فيَّ فعِلقي لديهم خلق

    I hoped for life from you but you disappointed me

    Completely, yet your lightning struck me

  5. رجوت منكم حَيَاً فأخلفني

    كلّاً ولكن أصابني صعق

    O Solomon, I thirst

    The aqueducts have been cut off from you

  6. يا سليمان ظماءً

    قُطِعَت عنك السواقي

    I have grown old so permit the separation

    And prepare for departure

  7. شِخت فأْذنْ بفراقٍ

    وتجهز لانطلاق

    My eyes have divorced you with divorce

  8. بنت عني بطلاق

    وطلاق وطلاق

    I have wasted you, three

    Seizing by the throat

  9. فرطت فيك ثلاثٌ

    آخذات بالخناق

    So wear the garment of despair from the man

    And seek repayment of the dowry

  10. فالبس اليأس من الرج

    عى وطالب بالصَداق

    We are a people who have

    No piety for the patron

  11. نحن قوم ما لدينا

    للمُوَلِّي من خلاق

    We eat meat and throw

    The mattresses of Iraq

  12. نأكل اللحم ونرمي

    بكراديس العُراق

    After drinking wine, what care we

    For sweeping the street

  13. ما علينا بعد شرب ال

    خمر من طرح الزقاق

    With you we have exchanged refusal

    So leave the door of hypocrisy

  14. قد تبدَّلنا بك المر

    د فدع باب النفاق

    And we were tempted by slave-girls

    Among them, well-proportioned

  15. وفُتِنَّا ببدورٍ

    منهمُ ذاتِ اتساق

    And we were passionate for the branches

    Among them, slender and delicate

  16. وشغفنا بغصون

    منهم هيف رشاق

    So cease your running and surrender

    That to the freed horses

  17. فاترك الركض وسلِّم

    ذاك للخيل العتاق

    You are content when you race

    To follow up from behind

  18. أنت راض حين تجري

    بعد سبق بلَحاق

    So be patient, O love of my soul

    Every full moon is for loss

  19. فاصطبر يا حب نفسي

    كل بدر لِمُحاق

    And when patience fails you

    Then fetch the water of aqueducts

  20. ومتى خانك صبرٌ

    فاجتلب ماء المآقي

    And weep the days of a life

    Of which you are in a race

  21. وابك أيامَ حياةٍ

    أنت منها في سباق

    We have walked in your streets

    And we have preceded in your domains

  22. قد مشقنا في قراطي

    سك هاتيك الرقاق

    The racers among your companions

    How often she made me drink from your cup

  23. وسبقنا في ميادي

    نك أصحاب السباق

    The large draft

  24. كم سقاني فوك من رِي

    قك بالكأس الدهاق

  25. ربما الْتَفَّت إلى الصب

    ح لنا ساق بساق

    Of fine wool

  26. في نقابٍ من لثامٍ

    وإزار من عناق

    And nothing remains

    So stick to the beard and know

  27. ذهبت نضرة خدَّي

    ك وما شيء بباقي

    That this is a time of senility

    This illness of yours is from nothing

  28. فالزم المنقاش واعلم

    أنه دهر ارتفاق

    But prolonged passionate desire

    Where is the mighty sultan for you

  29. ليس من دائك هذا

    غير طول النتف راقي

    In the land of Iraq

    You were in a kingdom of refusal

  30. أين سلطانٌ عزيزٌ

    لك في أرض العراق

    Feared for your firmness

    Your injustice there erased

  31. كنت في ملك من المر

    دة مرهوب الشقاق

    Every right and justice

    Your kingdom did not satisfy

  32. قد محا جورُك فيه

    كلَّ حقٍّ وحقاق

    The King of the seven layers

    So he cast it down with removal

  33. لم يكن ملكُك يُرضي

    مَلِكَ السبع الطباق

    Or shocked it with splitting

    The pleasures have fled you

  34. فرماه بزوال

    أودهاه بانفتاق

    On the back of the Burāq

    So ask about us, for she has quenched us

  35. هربت منك المودّا

    ت على ظهر البراق

    From you with sweetened drink

    You were something but then faded away

  36. فاسلُ عنّا قد سقانا

    عنك بالسلوة ساقي

    And nothing remains

    And we found you sweet

  37. كنت شيئاً فتلاشي

    ت وما شيء بباقي

    But left you distasteful

    You were rational with lovers

  38. فوردنا منك عذباً

    وصدرنا عن زُعاق

    So your passion made you irrational

    Then excuse what is past

  39. كنت عقّاً بالمحبي

    ن فعقتك عَقاق

    For nothing ascends to the stars

    You will not see a stance of ardent

  40. فالْهُ عما فات منه

    ما إلى النجم مراقي

    Yearning upon hot coal

    No, not a soul of a loving one

  41. لن ترى موقف مستع

    د على حرِّ اشتياق

    Climbing among the Pleiades

    Release your prisoner, he of might

  42. لا ولا نفسَ محبٍّ

    ترتقي بين التراقي

    From that bond

    No passion remains in him for you

  43. فُكَّ مأسورُك ذو القد

    رة من ذاك الوثاق

    Except pretense

    Taste the punishment of excuse, and know

  44. لم يدع منه عذارا

    ك هوى غير اختلاق

    That it is unceasing

    We have consumed you delicious

  45. ذق عقاب العذر واعلم

    أنه غير مطاق

    Sweet and pleasant taste

    And spat you out disgusting

  46. قد أكلناك لذيذاً

    طيباً حلو المذاق

    Though separation is not hated

    The best of your conditions is to submit

  47. ولفظناك كريهاً

    غير مكروه الفراق

    From the illness of barbers

  48. خير أحوالك أن تس
