لي طيلسانٌ ليس يترك لي
رَفْوي له مالاً ولا نَشَبا
I have a cloak that leaves me not
Though it has neither wealth nor youth
طِرْبٌ تُغنِّي منه ناحيةٌ
وتشُقُّ أخرى جيبَها طربا
A song that makes one region sing
And rends another's heart with joy
كيف السبيلُ إلى عِمارتهِ
وإذا عَمَرْتُ خرابَهُ خَرِبا
How can I mend its tattered state
When if I patch its tatters, they unravel
كان ابنُ حربٍ حين جادَ به
لا شك فيه يُريد بي الحَرَبا
Ibn Harb's son, when generous,
Gave me this cloak, wanting to fight
