1. أجدرُ مالٍ أن يكون نائلا

    هديةٌ تكسِبُ شكراً عاجلا

    The worthiest wealth is that which makes its owner generous,

    A gift that elicits prompt gratitude,

  2. فبادِر الآن الثناءَ الكاملا

    تلاقِ خلف الفكر منه حافلا

    So now bestow complete praise,

    And reap behind the thought abundant rewards.

  3. واقسم لنا الكامخ قَسْماً عادلا

    قَسْمَ يدِ اللِّه لك الفضائلا

    And divide for us, O eminent one, a fair share,

    The divine portion grants you virtues,

  4. ولا تَرى فعلكَ فِعْلاً خاملا

    إن أنت أسعفْتَ صديقاً مائلا

    And regard not your deed as fruitless,

    If you oblige a needy friend in trouble,

  5. بحاجةٍ نَزَّر فيها سائلا

    بل فاضلٌ وافق شكراً فاضلا

    With a request which a beggar implored,

    But excel and harmonize with excellent thanks,

  6. لن يرهَب العذلَ ولا العواذلا

    في أن يُنيلَ التُّحفَ القلائلا

    Neither the weak nor the mighty will be daunted,

    From bestowing the few gifts,

  7. مَنْ قد أنالَ النعمَ الجلائلا

    وكان بالعُرْف سحاباً هاطلا

    Who has attained abundant favors,

    And was, in custom, a pouring cloud,

  8. يُتبعُ بالفرائض النوافلا

    أصاب حقاً أم أصاب باطلا

    Followed by voluntary good deeds.

    Whether he hit the right or missed the mark,

  9. حاشاي أن يصبحَ رأيي فائلا

    فأغتدي أخرى الأنام قائلا

    Far be it that my view should go astray,

    And I attack people saying,

  10. وتغتدي أمنع خلق فاعلا

    أقسمْتُ لولا أن أصيب عاذلا

    And you attack the most invincible maker.

    I swear had I not been a transgressor,

  11. أعمى عن المزحِ غبيّاً غافلا

    يُلزمُني الجهلَ ولستُ جاهلا

    Blind to jest, utterly heedless,

    Ignorance would oblige me, though I am no ignorant,

  12. في أن مَهرتُ كامخاً عقائلا

    حواليَ الأجيادِ لا عواطلا

    That I have defamed an eminent man,

    Around whom the noble steeds roam not distracted,

  13. لقد جعلتُ القطرَ منها وابلا

    والظّلفَ رأساً والذُّنابَى كاهلا

    I made the rain pour from them overflowing,

    The buttocks into heads and the tails into shoulders,

  14. حتّى تراها شُرَّداًمواثلا

    طوالعَ الأنجُمِ لا أوافلا

    Until you see them scattered fragmented,

    Rising stars, not setting,

  15. تنشدها المحافل المحافلا

    تُولي الصديقَ نحلَها العواسلا

    Sought by throngs and gatherings,

    Bestowing their bounty on friends,

  16. وشانئيكَ رُقشَها القواتلا

    وتُورثُ الحُسّادَ خَبْلاً خابلا

    And their evil on enemies,

    And bequeathing their envious foes misery and loss.

  17. ما خالفتْ قوائمٌ جحافلا

    No hosts have marched in contradiction,
