عَدّ عنك المَنازلا

والطلولَ المواثلا

Turn away from the abodes,

And the towering landmarks,

إن للشعر في سُلَي

مانَ عنهُنَّ شاغلا

Verily poetry has in Sulaiy,

What distracts it from them,

مَلِكٌ لا يرى اللُّهى

تستحقُّ الوسائلا

A king who sees not happiness,

Deserves not the means,

حسبُ راجيهِ عندَهُ

أنه جاء سائلا

It is enough for its seeker with it,

That he came seeking,

لا يرى المنَّ قائلاً

ويرى المنَّ فاعلا

It sees not the giver saying,

And sees the giver doing,

سيبهُ عُقرُ مالهِ

وهْو يُدْعَى فواضلا

Leave it, loss of his wealth,

And it is called excelling,

ويراهُ فرائضاً

ويُسَمَّى نوافلا

And sees it obligations,

And names it voluntary,

فتيمَّمْهُ واثقاً

لا تيمَّمهُ آملا

So aim for it with certainty,

Aim not for it hopefully,

وإذا كادت الأعا

لي تُلاقي الأسافلا

And when the pillars,

Almost meet the lowlands,

وَطِئَ الأرضَ وطأةً

فأقرَّ الزلازلا

And stomp the earth heavily,

Shaking the tremors,
