1. غدا الدهرُ مفترّاً أغرَّ المضاحِكِ

    عن ابن عبيد اللَّهِ تاج الممالِكِ

    Time has turned playful, delighting with smiles

    About the son of Ubayd Allah, the crown of kingdoms

  2. عن الكوكبِ الدُّرِّيِّ في كلِّ حِندسٍ

    عن اللَّمعةِ البيضاء في كُلِّ حالكِ

    About the brilliant star in every gathering

    About the shining bead in every situation

  3. عن القاسمِ المقسومِ في الناسِ رفدُهُ

    إذا لم تطب عن ملكها نفسُ مالك

    About the divided Qasim, his gifts nourish people

    If a ruler's soul is not satisfied with his kingdom

  4. عن ابن سليمان بن وهبٍ فتى العُلا

    على رغم أوغادٍ كُهولِ الحسائك

    About the son of Sulayman ibn Wahb, the noble youth

    Despite the hatred of ignorant, vain fools

  5. أغرُّ يُكنَّى بالحسين مُسلِّمٌ

    له الحُسْنَ والإحسانَ كلُّ مُماحك

    Delightful is he who is nicknamed Al-Hussein, a Muslim

    Beauty and benevolence belong to him, all smiles

  6. وزيرُ ولي العهد وابن وزيره

    أخو المجدِ ركَّابُ الأمورِ التوامك

    Minister of the Crown Prince and son of his minister

    Brother of glory, arranger of intertwined affairs

  7. تُكشّفُ منه محنةُ المُلكِ شيمةً

    مهذَّبةً والتبرُ عند السبائك

    Through him the tribulation of kingship is uncovered elegantly

    Refined and innocent towards the sword-makers

  8. وإن سترَتْ وجهَ الحقائِق شبهةٌ

    رمى سِترها بالصائباتِ الهواتك

    If ambiguity concealed the face of realities

    He threw off its cover with striking blades

  9. ويُفزَعُ في الجُلَّى إلى عَزَماتِهِ

    فيستلُّ منها كالسيوف البواتِك

    In hard times he rushes to his resolves

    Drawing swords from them like attacking swords

  10. يعارِكُ بالتدبير كلَّ شديدةٍ

    فيصرعُها لا هُدَّ ركنُ المُعارِك

    With strategy he battles every hardship

    Vanquishing it, its pillars have no firmness in battle

  11. فتىً عَطِرتْ ذكراهُ وانهلَّ جُودُهُ

    تهلَّلَ باكٍ من حيا المُزنِ ضاحك

    A noble whose fame's scent spread and whose generosity poured forth

    A weeping grateful one rejoices with laughter

  12. فعافيه في نَضْحٍ من الغيث صائبٍ

    ومُطريه في نضح من المسكِ صائك

    In a downpour of beneficial rain may he be well

    And in pouring of musk may he be perfumed

  13. ذكا وزكا فالعُرفُ من وبلِ ديمةٍ

    سماكيةٍ والعرف من طِيبِ ذانك

    Shrewd and pure, the meadows bear witness with continual rain

    Lush, and the meadows bear witness with good scent

  14. ألاحَ بُروق البشرِ تدعُو عُفاتَهُ

    فجاءوا فأعفى بالرغابِ الوشائك

    The gleam of mankind calls to his chastity

    So they came and he granted despite thorns

  15. فنُفّلتِ الأيدي غِناها بمدحِهِ

    ونُفِّلتِ الأفواهُ طيب المساوِك

    Hands were emptied, enriched by his praise

    And mouths were emptied of sweet discourse

  16. أقولُ لسئّالٍ به مُتجاهلٍ

    مَحِلتَ وقد آنت إنابةُ ماحك

    I say to an asker ignorant of him

    You have transgressed, it is time for returning

  17. توهَّمْ مصابيحَ السماءِ سبائكاً

    وصُغْ مثله من صفو تلك السبائك

    Imagine the lamps of the sky to be necklaces

    And compose the like thereof with pure necklaces

  18. فتىً أسهلتْ خيراتُهُ لعفاتِهِ

    فأحزَنَ في تلك المعاني السَّوامك

    A noble whose virtues facilitated his pardons

    So the profound meanings saddened the night companions

  19. ومن كثُرتْ في ماله شركاؤهُ

    غدا في معاليه قليلَ المُشارك

    One whose partners increased in his wealth

    Became few in his noble deeds and sharing

  20. فتىً لا يُبالي حين يحفظُ مَجده

    متى هلكتْ أموالُه في الهوالِكِ

    A noble who cares not when preserving his glory

    If his wealth perishes in disasters

  21. له راحةٌ روْحاءُ يسفكُ ماءَها

    وليس لماء الوجهِ منه بسافك

    He has a cool calmness whose water pours forth

    Unlike the water of the face from him, it has no pourer

  22. مُقَبَّلُ ظهرِ الكفِّ وهَّابُ بطنِها

    مواهبَ ليستْ بالخِساس الركائك

    Kissing the back of the palm, gifting its inside

    Gifts unlike the mean, despicable ones

  23. يسوقُ إلى تقبيلها القومَ أنها

    غِياثٌ لهم بل عِصمةٌ في المهالك

    He brings people to kiss it, for it is

    Salvation for them, rather protection from ruin

  24. نرحِّلُ آمالاً إلى باب قاسمٍ

    فيرجعنَ أموالاً عِراض المبارك

    We carry hopes to Qasim's door

    So they return, blessed possessions

  25. حباني بما يعيا به كُلُّ رافدٍ

    وحبَّرتُ ما يعيا به كلُّ حائك

    He granted me what would revive every affiliate

    And I have written what every writer would vivify

  26. فأعدَمتُه مدحَ الغِثاثِ مدائحاً

    وأعدمني رفدَ الأكُفِّ المسائك

    So I deprived him of praising the worthless

    And he deprived me of providing the cupped hands

  27. وما لربيعٍ ممطرٍ من مُجاوِدٍ

    وما لبقيع مُزْهر من مُحاوِك

    What spring showering has it from cajolers?

    What blossoming meadow from lovers?

  28. وهبْتُ له نفسي ووُدِّي ونُصرتي

    ولو صكَّ وجهي حدُّ أبيضَ باتِك

    I devoted myself, love, and support to him

    Even if the edge of a shining sword struck my face

  29. أقولُ لأقوامٍ تعاطوْا علاءَه

    فأعيَتهُمُ الخضراءُ ذاتُ الحبائك

    I say to those who tasted his sublimity

    Yet the green one with bracelets exhausted them

  30. دعوا آل وهْبٍ للمعالي فإنَّهُمْ

    بقايا اللَّيالي الآخذاتِ التوارِكِ

    Leave the Family of Wahb to the noble deeds, they are

    Remnants of seizing nights that remain

  31. أناسٌ يسوسُون البلادَ وأهلها

    بشدَّةِ أركانٍ ولينِ عرائك

    People who govern the country and its people

    With strong pillars and soft bracelets

  32. سراةٌ إذا ما الناسُ أضحتْ سراتُهم

    لنا ضُحكاً أضْحوا لنا كالمضاحك

    Nobles whom when people became their captives

    For us became laughers, for us like smiles

  33. يودُّ الورى لو يشترون شهورهم

    بأحوال أعوامٍ سواهُم دكائك

    The people wish they could buy their months

    With the conditions of years other than theirs, struck by decay

  34. وشاهد زُور للكَفور ابن بلبلٍ

    فقُلت له أطغَيْتَ أطغى البوائك

    A false witness for the ungrateful son of a nightingale

    So I said to him, you have transgressed, the most transgressing of the dazzlers

  35. وقد كنتُ من مُدّاحِهِ غير أنني

    تناوكْتُ مضطراً مع المتناوِك

    I was among those who praised him except I was forced

    To share with the forced against my will

  36. فلم يجزُني إلا مواعيدَ أعصفتْ

    بهنَّ أعاصيرُ الرياحِ السواهِك

    Nothing prevented me except promises the winds of ordeals

    Swept away. But yes he did prevent me, had I thanked

  37. بلى قد جزاني لو شكرتُ جزاءَه

    جزاءَ مَنيكٍ في استِه غير نائك

    A prevention of reward, when I praised him

    When I was worthy of the defiant, ruling sword

  38. وليس جزاءً أنْ عفا إذ مَدَحْتُه

    وقد كنتُ أهلاً للعِصيِّ الدَّمالك

    It is not rejoicing, but a testimony I hold

    I will fulfill its right, not neglecting

  39. ولستُ بهجَّاءٍ ولكن شهادةٌ

    لديَّ أُوَدِّي حقَّها غيرَ آفِك

    I am not one to eat rotten meat

    But for it I have a chew, not neglecting

  40. وما أنا للَّحمِ الخبيثِ بآكلٍ

    وإنّ له منّي للَوْكةَ لائكِ

    If my hands firmly grasp the handhold of Qasim

    I will not perish at the turning of time

  41. إذا استمسكَتْ كفّي بعروة قاسمٍ

    فلسْتُ على صرْفِ الزمانِ بهالك

    We saw every pardon and attainment as deficient

    We heard their two mentioned in proverbs

  42. أرانا عِياناً كلَّ عفوٍ ونائلٍ

    سمعْنا بمذكورَيْهما في البرامِكِ

    Qasim saved me from the stumbling of fate

    With whatever I wished of his pursuing virtues

  43. تداركَني مِنْ عثرةِ الدهرِ قاسمٌ

    بما شئتُ من معروفِهِ المتدارك

    So I came to prosper, fruitful in days

    And I came to glory, strong in life

  44. فأصبحْتُ في أيكٍ من العيشِ مثمرٍ

    وأمسيْتُ في عيشٍ من العزِّ شائك

    A noble whose grants preoccupied him from asking

    Swift grants for those nearing requests

  45. فتىً في نثاهُ شاغلٌ عن سؤالهِ

    سبوقُ العطايا للطَّلوب المُواشك

    For the gladdened faces are no criterion

    Nor the veiled innermost thoughts any interpreter

  46. فليس لأبشارِ الوجوه بمُخْلقٍ

    وليس لأستارِ الخفايا بهاتِك

    A noble I will not call youthful for novelty

    But for those striking qualities, defender

  47. فتىً لا أُسمّيه فتىً لحداثةٍ

    ولكن لهاتيك السجايا الفواتك

    Qualities that refused but to avenge their neighbor

    From fate, either saddle-bags bite with teeth

  48. سجايا أبت إلا انتصافاً لجارِها

    من الدهر إما عضَّ رحْلٌ بِحارك

    He jokes duringplayfulness in spending his money

    And in pursuing truth he is no joker

  49. يُواحِكُ عند العذل في بَذْلِ مالهِ

    وعندَ ارتيادِ الحقّ غيرُ مُواحك

    An asker about Qasim and his place

    So I said the sublimities are there

  50. وسائلةٍ عن قاسمٍ ومكانِهِ

    فقُلْتُ لها إن العلاءَ هنالك

    Generous whom his actions fulfill his lineage

    And of lineage in the family of Sasan interwoven

  51. كريمٌ تفي أفعالُه بانتسابهِ

    وذو نسب في آلِ ساسانَ شابك

    I remain shaded when I behold a day of his bliss

    As if I were in Paradise above the couches

  52. أظلُّ إذا شاهَدْتُ يومَ نعيمِهِ

    كأنّي في الفردوسِ فوقَ الأرائك

    In sight of a beautiful, heard world

    With a just king, not domineering

  53. بمرأى من الدنيا جميلٍ ومَسْمعٍ

    لدى ملكٍ بالحق لا مُتمالك

    Facing a bright, radiant, white face

    Like a full moon amidst arranged stars

  54. مقابلَ وجهٍ منه أبيضَ مشرقٍ

    كبدر الدجى بين النجوم الشوابك

    My admiration intensified facing him

    And with amber underneath like shields

  55. يحيّيه أترجُّ تسامى حياله

    وشاهَسْفَرمٌّ تحته كالدَّرانك

    Fruits wherein are scents and tastes

    Repelling the affection of graceful, rushing women

  56. وفاكهةٍ فيها مشمٌّ ومطعمٌ

    تردُّ موداتِ النساءِ الفوارِك

    If plants were absent, his scattering would revive them

    With scattering of musk atop vessels

  57. ولو عُدم الريحانُ حَيَّاهُ نشرُهُ

    بمثلِ سحيقِ المسكِ فوقَ المداوك

    By my soul and family that blessed face

    Receives the most faithful gratitude, blessed

  58. بنفسي وأهلي ذاك وجهاً مباركاً

    تلقَّى بأوفى الشكرِ نُعمَى المبارك

    The beautiful singers stir up his goblets

    With praise of him which has spread through all paths

  59. تحثُّ الحسانُ المُحسِناتُ كؤوسَهُ

    بِمَدْحٍ له قد سار جمَّ المسالِك

    For him excitement sways every inspired one

    While his enjoyments are like ritual

  60. فيهتزُّ للجدوَى على كل مجتد

    وكانتْ ملاهي مثلِه كالمناسك

    He has a gathering that does not cease to be headed

    With the best of ostrich eggs amidst the sand grouse

  61. له مَجْلِسٌ ما إن يزال مُصدَّراً

    بأحسنَ من بَيْض النعام الترائك

    Therein singers sing to us, pleasing him

    With verses of praise, not incompatible

  62. يُغنّينَهُ فيه بما سيَّرت له

    لُهاهُ من الأمداحِ غيرِ الأوافكِ

    Never have the beautiful praised a benefactor

    With praise like influential, flowing praise

  63. ولم يتغنَّ المحسناتُ لمحسنٍ

    بمثلِ مديحٍ ذامِلٍ فيه راتكِ

    We witnessed him one day, delightful, covered

    Setting up joys for us atop the platforms

  64. شهدْنا له يوماً أغرَّ محجَّلاً

    أقام لنا اللذاتِ فوق السنابك

    For Umm Ali a thrush therein, intimate

    Of the eye like an eye, lined with kohl

  65. لأمِّ عليٍّ رَبْرَبٌ فيه آنِسٌ

    من العِين مثلِ العين حُفَّتْ بعانِك

    Of the clear complexion, lips as if

    Speaking with gazelle mouths, shying

  66. من الوُضَّح اللُّعْس الشّفاه كأنما

    يَفُهْنَ بأفواه الظباءِ الأوارك

    They raise voices gently and sometimes

    Murmur subtly, not the whisper of conspirators

  67. يُرفّعْنَ أصواتاً لِداناً وتارةً

    يُنَمنمنَ وشْياً غيرَ وشي الحوائك

    They tilted for us when they lined up before us

    With sending away guests of black sorrows

  68. كفلْنَ لنا لمَّا اصطفَفْنَ حيالنا

    بترحيل أضيافِ الهُمومِ السّوادك

    She does but send wondrous matters to us

    Wondrous matters raining upon every vessel and devotee

  69. فما برحتْ تُهدي إلينا عجائبٌ

    عجائبَ تُصبي كلَّ صابٍ وناسك

    A Turkish girl who shoots arrows

    Hitting the target in symmetry, not in battle

  70. فتاةٌ من الأتراكِ ترمي بأسهُمٍ

    يُصِبْنَ الحَشا في السّلم لا في المعارك

    As if the melody of singers lent her

    Its spirit and rhyme of weeping laughers

  71. كأنَّ زميرَ القاصياتِ أعارَها

    شجاهُ وسجعَ الباكيات الضواحك

    A garden, a garden delighting our eyes

    With its lanterns therein laughing

  72. وبستان بستانٌ يُقِرُّ عيونَنا

    بما فيه من نُوَّاره المتضاحك

    Singing and a delicate adorned face both

    Stirring the emotions of the composed

  73. غناءٌ ووجهٌ مونقانِ كلاهما

    يهيلانِ جُولَيْ ذي الحِجى المتماسك

    We shaded a monument there our hearts doubt

    With that charming spirit, not with the stars

  74. ظللنا لها نَصْباً تشكُّ قلُوبنا

    بذاك الشجا الفتَّانِ لا بالنيازك

    No blamer can disparage her stature

    Nor the transgressor intend a sounder path

  75. وما جُلَّنارٍ بالمُقَصِّر شأوُها

    ولا المتعدِّي قصد أهدى المسالك

    A gentle slender one leaning her lute

    Against a star on the field of the chest's sky

  76. لطيفةُ قدّ الثدي تُسند عودَها

    إلى ناجمٍ في ساحةِ الصدر فالك

    Her composure calmed regarding the tall ones

    And reared regarding the short lively ones

  77. تطامَنَ عن قدّ الطوالِ قوامُها

    وأربى على قدّ القصارِ الحواتك

    A dancer with drum and cymbals, alluring

    Possessing the melody of Maghnatis and provocation of youth

  78. ورقاصةٍ بالطبلِ والصنجِ كاعبٌ

    لها غُنْجُ مِخناثٍ وتَكريهُ فاتك

    Opportunity was afforded her body: grants of grants

    And if it touched her waist: melting of melting

  79. أُتيحَ لها في جسمها رفدُ رافدٍ

    وإن نالها في خصرها نَهْك ناهك

    When she stood up in the rows her teeth shone baring

    A cast ingot in the field of the mouth's mold

  80. إذا هي قامَتْ في الشُّفوفِ أضاءها

    سناها فشفّتْ عن سبيكة سابك

    The name of fiddler goes beyond the name of flirt

    A name designated by you with your perspectives

  81. تخطَّى اسمَ عَيَّارٍ إلى اسمِ مؤاجَرٍ

    مُسمٍّ لها ما شئتَ من مُتفاتِك

    Those names and their bearers were all ransomed

    The adornment of God's land after necklaces

  82. فدتْ تلكم الأسماءَ بل حاملاتِها

    زيانبُ أرضِ اللَّهِ بعد العواتك

    Faces like days of joy resembling for us

    Wild cows like the seizing nights

  83. وجوهٌ كأيامِ السُّعودِ تشبُّها

    لنا طُرَرٌ مثلُ الليالي الحوالك

    Captives to whom our minds' wits were taken captive

    Rulers who ruled the might of kingdoms

  84. سبايا إليهنَّ استباءُ عقولِنا

    مماليك مُلّكْن اقتدارَ الممالك

    Pleasures between manifestation and withdrawal to the bosom

    And between constriction of the ascetics

  85. نوازلُ بين الانبساطِ إلى الخنا

    وبين انقباضِ المُخبتاتِ النواسك

    Sweethearts who shed blood yet you see

    No care from them for pouring tears

  86. موالكُ يسفُكْنَ الدماءَ ولا تَرى

    لهُنَّ اكتراثاً بالدموعِ السوافك

    When they decide on parting, we are all

    Sorrowful for those circling suns

  87. إذا هُنَّ أزْمْعَن الفراقَ فكلُّنا

    أسِيٌّ على تلك الشموس الدوالك

    Qasim, you leave nothing yet take nothing

    You refuse and take nothing, yet leave nothing

  88. أقاسمُ ما تتركْ فلستَ بآخذٍ

    أبَيْتَ وما تأخذْ فلستَ بتارك

    So leave me not, oh noble, exposed

    To a fate that leaves the noble not leaving

  89. فلا تتركنّي أيُّها الحرُّ عُرضةً

    لدهرٍ غدا للحرّ غير متارك
