1. شجوُ قلبي من سائر الخلق شاجي

    ليس للقلب دونَهَا من مَعَاجِ

    My heart's passion for her surpasses all people's passion

    The heart has no solace without her

  2. أفْرَدَتْها بالقلب أَفرادُ حُسْنٍ

    خُلِقَتْ وحدها بلا أزواجِ

    Her beauty singled her out, excelling all

    She was created peerless, without match

  3. فجرى حبها من القلب والأحـ

    ـشاء مجرىً خلاف مجرى اللجاجِ

    So my love for her flowed from my heart and thoughts

    Unlike the flow of persistent skeptics

  4. هو حبٌّ جاء الهوى فيه والرأ

    ي سواءً وليس بالإلهاجِ

    It's a love wherein desire and reason are equal

    Not just fleeting infatuation

  5. ذات جِيدٍ يُزْهَى على كل عقدٍ

    وجبين يزهى على كل تاجِ

    A beauty whose neck graces every pearl necklace

    And a forehead that adorns every crown

  6. يتلقاك في الغلائل منها

    وجه شمسٍ وجسم دميةِ عاجِ

    Her face greets you amongst her tresses

    Like a sun's face and a doll's body of ivory

  7. أَسبلت من ذراه جعداً أثيثاً

    جائزاً حدَّ متنها الرّجراجِ

    She let down jet black braids

    Flowing seemly, limited by their length

  8. جارياً فوق متنها جرية الما

    ءِ وإن كان حالك الأمواجِ

    Flowing atop her figure like the flow

    Of water, though you are in tumultuous waves

  9. فهي أما السراجُ منها فوهَّا

    جٌ وأما الظلام منها فداجي

    She is like a lamp in her radiance

    And like darkness in her coyness

  10. رملة عَبْلة من البُدْن غصن

    مخْطَفٌ مرهف من الإدماجِ

    A supple branch from an elegant body

    Delicate, refined in her composition

  11. فلأعطافها صنوفُ اهتزازٍ

    ولأردافها صنوف ارتجاجِ

    Her sides sway gracefully

    And her hips shake alluringly

  12. طلعت في لَبُوسها وحلاها

    كمَهاة في روضة مِبْهاجِ

    She appeared amidst her clothing and adornment

    Like a frightened gazelle in a garden refuge

  13. ثم قالت بطرفها سوف تدري

    فأضاقت عليّ رَحْبَ الفجاجِ

    Then she glanced with her eyes and said

    "You will soon know", tightening my vast space

  14. حدّدت طرفها وعيداً لصبٍّ

    صرعتْهُ بطرفها وهو ساجي

    She threatened with her glance, warning a love-struck youth

    Felling him with her eyes while he was smitten

  15. ليت شعري علام أُوعَدُ بالهجـ

    ـر ووُدِّي ودٌّ بغير مزاجِ

    I wonder why I'm promised separation

    When I'm affectionate and hope-filled

  16. وأنا الخاضع الشحيح على السِّر

    رِ كشُحِّي على دم الأوداجِ

    Though I'm a humble secret-keeper

    Like a wound's scab on spewing blood

  17. والتي ما رأيتها قطُّ إلا

    عاد عندي الحسان مثلَ السِّماجِ

    She I've never seen but that the vision of her

    Returns to me like an illusion

  18. ياله من صِبا بغير تصابٍ

    وشجىً خالصٍ بغير تشاجي

    Oh, a love without suffering

    And pure passion without agony

  19. قل لمن حرَّمت عليَّ جَداها

    أين لطفُ الغنيِّ للمحتاجِ

    Say to her who denied me her presence

    Where is the kindness of the wealthy to the needy?

  20. عجباً لي وللذي سوَّلتْ لي

    منك نفسي وللذي أنا راجي

    Wondrous! Me and the one who enticed

    My soul, and the one I hope for

  21. أنا راجٍ لأنْ يفوز بحظٍّ

    منك قلبي وليتَه منك ناجي

    I hope my heart succeeds in winning

    Some of your affection, if only a small share

  22. ليت شعري أسحرُ عينيك داء الـ

    ـقلبِ أم نارُ خدِّك الوهاجِ

    I wonder if your eyes' magic is the ailment

    Of my heart, or the blaze of your reddened cheeks

  23. أيها الناس ويحكم هل مُغيثٌ

    لِشَجٍ يستغيث من ظلم شاجي

    O people! Is there a savior for one passionately in love

    Appealing from the injustice of the cruel beloved?

  24. من مُجيري من أضعفِ الناس ركناً

    ولعينيه سطوة الحَجَّاجِ

    Who will protect me, the weakest of people,

    When her eyes have the power of tyrants

  25. شادنٌ يرتعي القلوبَ ببغدا

    ذَ ولا يرتعي الخَلا بالنِّباجِ

    A beauty who grazes on hearts with her smile

    But does not graze on minds with her voice

  26. أورث القلبَ سحرُ عينيه داءً

    ماله غيرَ ريقِهِ من علاجِ

    Her eyes' magic has sickened my heart

    With an ailment only her saliva can cure

  27. ولئن قلتُ شادنٌ إن قلبي

    لأَسيرٌ لغادةٍ مِغْناجِ

    And if I say "Beauty, my heart is captive

    To a hazel-eyed gazelle with a supple neck",

  28. يومُها للنديم يومُ نعيمٍ

    والتذاذٍ وحَبرةٍ وابتهاجِ

    Her day for the confidant is one of bliss

    Pleasure, serenity, and gaiety

  29. ذات شدوٍ إذا جرت فيه للشرْ

    بِ جَرى أمرُها على المنهاجِ

    A singer whose voice, when she sings,

    Flows harmoniously like a stream

  30. يبعث الساكنَ البعيد اهتياجاً

    ويداوي حرارة المهتاجِ

    It awakens distant sleepers to exuberance

    And cures the burning fever of the lovesick

  31. أقبلتْ والربيعُ يختال في الرو

    ض وفِي المُزْن ذي الحيا الثَّجَّاجِ

    She came while spring was glorious in the meadows

    And on the branches full of chirping birds

  32. ذو سماء كأدكن الخَزِّ قد غِيْ

    مَتْ وأرضٍ كأخضر الديباجِ

    Under a sky dark as black fur

    And ground as green as brocade

  33. وتجلى عن كل ما نتمنى

    موعدُ الكَذْخُذَاة والهِيلاجِ

    She revealed everything we wished for

    At the promised time of rewards and gifts

  34. فظللنا في نزهتين وفي حُسْـ

    ـنَينِ بين الأرمال والأهزاجِ

    We reclined during two pleasures amidst

    Sand dunes and grassy hills

  35. نغمة تسحر القلوب وضربٌ

    هو بين الترتيل والإِدراجِ

    A melody enchanting hearts and a rhythm

    Between chanting and humming

  36. سيرة بين سيرتين من القصـ

    ـف تُنَسِّيك سيرة الهِمْلاجِ

    An evening between two evenings of storytelling

    Making you forget the evening of worries

  37. ونعمنا بليلة ليس لِلْهَمـ

    ـمِ لديها قِرىً سوى الإِزعاجِ

    We enjoyed a night without concerns of sorrow

    Nothing but joy within it

  38. قد جعلنا الكؤوس فيها نجوماً

    وجَعلنا الأكُفَّ كالأبراجِ

    We made the cups into stars

    And the palms like constellations

  39. تم فيها النعيم كلَّ تمامٍ

    وعلا قدره عن الإِخداجِ

    Bliss was complete, nothing held back

    Its value too lofty for bargaining

  40. بفتاةٍ تسرنا في المثاني

    وعجوزٍ تسرُّنا في الزجاجِ

    With a girl who delighted us with gifts

    And an old woman who delighted us with wine

  41. لم نزل نشرب المدامة حتى

    عاد منّا الفصيح كاللَّجلاجِ

    We kept drinking the wine until

    The eloquent turned into babblers

  42. أخذت من رؤوس قوم كرام

    ثأْرَها عند أرجُل الأعلاجِ

    She took revenge on the heads of dignified people

    At the feet of the lowly

  43. وَطِئتها الأعلاجُ فانتقمت من

    نَا شَمولٌ تُضِىء ضوء السراجِ

    The lowly trampled her so she avenged us

    With a passionate zeal illuminating like a lamp

  44. فترى كل مِصْقعٍ ذا سِقاطٍ

    وترى كل قيِّمٍ ذا اعوجاجٍ

    You'd see every drunk stumbling

    And every critic crooked and twisting

  45. يا لها ليلةً قضينا بها حا

    جاً وإن علَّقت قلوباً بحاجِ

    What a night we spent fulfilled

    Though hearts were left yearning

  46. رفعتْنا السعودُ فيها إلى الفو

    ز فكانت كليلة المِعرَاجِ

    Good fortune elevated us in it to success

    As if it were the night of ascension
