1. بدرٌ وشمسٌ وَلَدَا كوكبا

    أقسمتُ باللّه لقد أنجبا

    A moon and sun begot a planet,

    I swear by God they both gave birth.

  2. ثلاثةٌ تُشرقُ أنوارُها

    لا بُدِّلتْ من مَشرقٍ مَغربا

    Three shining lights,

    That did not change from east to west.

  3. بدرٌ وشمس أبَوَا مُشتَرٍ

    ما نازعتْ شَرْواهُ أمٌّ أبا

    Moon and sun parented Jupiter,

    His mother did not dispute his fortune.

  4. قد قلتُ إِذ بشِّرتُ بالمُشتري

    قولَ امرئٍ لم يَخْشَ أن يُكذَبا

    When I announced the birth of Jupiter,

    I spoke truthfully, and did not lie.

  5. يا آل بِشرٍ أبشروا كلّكُمْ

    فقد وَلَدْتُمْ مَطلباً مهرَبا

    O clan of Bishr, rejoice all of you!

    You have given birth to the sought refuge.

  6. تبارك اللّهُ وسبحانَهُ

    أيَّ شهابٍ منكُمُ أثقبا

    Blessed is God, glorified is He,

    What shooting star of yours pierced through?

  7. إن طابَ أو طِبْتُمْ فما أبعدتْ

    فروعُ مجدٍ أَشبهتْ منصبا

    If you are virtuous or made virtuous,

    Branches of glory resemble positions.

  8. ولا عجيبٌ لا ولا منْكَرٌ

    أن تلِدوا الأَطْيَبَ فالأطيبا

    It is no wonder or absurdity,

    That you gave birth to the most virtuous.

  9. أصبحتُمُ واللّهُ يُبقيكُمُ

    مُنتجَعَ الحُرِّ إذا أجدبا

    You have risen while God makes you last,

    As the free man's refuge when impoverished.

  10. مهما انتقصناهُ إذا زدتُمُ

    منْ نِعَمِ اللّهِ فلن يُحْسَبا

    However much we detract from you,

    Of God's blessings you will not be counted.

  11. أنتم أناسٌ بأياديكُمُ

    يَستغفرُ الدهرُ إذا أجدبا

    You are people whose hands,

    Make time seek forgiveness when distressed.

  12. فلْيشكرِ الدهرُ لكم إِنّهُ

    أرضى بكم من بعدما أغضبا

    So let time thank you, it

    Is pleased with you after being angry.

  13. إذا جَنى الدهرُ على أهلِهِ

    وزاد في عِدَّتِكُم أَعتَبا

    When time wrongs its people,

    And adds numbers to you all the more.

  14. إنَّ أبا العباس إلّا يكُنْ

    أَرَّخَ بالفُلجِ فقد شَبّبا

    Abbas's father is not one,

    To record defeats - he tied them up!

  15. قد بيَّضَ الأوجُه بابنٍ لَهُ

    قالتْ له آمالُنا مرحبا

    He whitened faces with a son of his,

    To whom our hopes said "welcome!"

  16. وذاك مِفتاحٌ لإقبالِكُمْ

    كذا قضى اللّهُ ولن يُغْلَبا

    That is the key to your rising fortunes,

    Thus God decreed and none can prevent.

  17. وقد تفاءلتُ له زاجراً

    كُنيتَهُ لا زاجراً ثعلبا

    I took it as good omen for him, his nickname,

    Not as an ill omen or fox.

  18. إنّي تأمّلتُ لَهُ كُنيةً

    إذا بدا مقلوبُها أعجبا

    I pondered a nickname for him,

    When reversed, it seemed wondrous:

  19. يصوغها العكسُ أبا سابعٍ

    وذاك فأْلٌ لم يعد مَعْطبا

    Reordering makes it "Father of Seven"

    A fortunate sign, no longer blemished.

  20. بل ذاك فألٌ ضامنٌ سبعةً

    مثل الصقور استشرفت أرنبا

    Rather a sign ensuring seven,

    Like falcons that spotted a hare.

  21. يأتون من صلبِ فتىً ماجدٍ

    لا كذَّب اللّه ولا خيبا

    They come from the loins of a glorious youth,

    God did not lie to him or disappoint.

  22. وقد أتاه منهُم واحدٌ

    فلينتظرْ ستّةً غُيَّبا

    One of them has come to him already,

    So let him await six who are absent!

  23. في مدةٍ تعمُرها نعمةٌ

    يجعلها اللّه له تُرْتُبا

    In a period prosperity will furnish,

    God will make it a regulated succession,

  24. حتى نراهُ جالساً بينهم

    أجلَّ من رَضوى ومن كَبْكَبا

    Until we see him sitting amongst them,

    Nobler than pleasure or aloofness.

  25. كالبدرِ وافى الأرضَ في نُورِهِ

    بين نجومٍ سبعةٍ فاحتبى

    Like the full moon he reached the earth in his light,

    Amongst seven stars he sought intimacy.

  26. يُعدي على الدهر إذا ما اعتدى

    ويؤمنُ الناسَ إذا استرهبا

    He exceeds time if it transgresses,

    And protects people if they feel dread.

  27. وليشكرِ النَّاجِمَ عن هذه

    فإنها من بعضِ ما بوَّبا

    The stars should thank him for these,

    As part of what he tied up and compiled.

  28. أسدَى وألحمتُ أخٌ لم أزل

    أحمدُ ما سدَّى وما سبَّبا

    I have supported, provisioned, a brother I never

    Ceased praising what he tied up or compiled.

  29. واسعدْ أبا العباس مُستوهِباً

    من ملكٍ أعطاهُ ما استوهبا

    And bless Abu al-Abbas seeking bounty,

    From a King who gave him what he sought.

  30. عَمِرتَ والمولودَ حتى ترى

    أولادَهُ خلفكُما موكبا

    Live long, and the newborn, until you see

    Children behind you both in procession.

  31. من فتيةٍ مثلِ أسودِ الشّرى

    وصبيةٍ تحسبُهُمْ ربربا

    From gallant youths like fierce lions,

    And girls you think mere butterflies.

  32. دونكموها يا بني مَرثدٍ

    لا تعدَموا أمثالَها مكسبا

    Shield them O clan of Murthid,

    Do not lack the likes of them as profit!

  33. يا رُبَّ جِدٍّ لكم في العلى

    قد جعل المالَ لكم ملعبا

    O Lord of ancient glory for them on high,

    Make wealth for them a playing field.

  34. لا سَلَبَ اللّهُ سرابيلَكُمْ

    من هذه النُّعمى ولن تُسلبا

    God did not strip your loincloths,

    Of this bounty, and they will not be stripped.

  35. وادَّرِعوا من عُرْفكم جُنّةً

    تَفُلُّ نابَ الدهرِ والمِخلبا

    And arm yourselves with your honor as armor,

    Shedding the claws and fangs of time.

  36. قلتُ لباغيكم وراجيكُمُ

    ما أبعدَ الغيثَ وما أقربا

    I said to those hostile and friendly to you,

    How far is rain, and how near.

  37. سما فأعلى عن يدٍ ملمساً

    منه وأدنى من فمٍ مشربا

    Lofty beyond a touching hand,

    And nearer than a drinking mouth.

  38. كم سبسبٍ جابَ مديحٌ لكم

    ما جاب من إحسانكم سبسبا

    How much murmuring dispraised you,

    That did not earn your generosity murmuring!

  39. بل خاض روضاً بين غدرانِهِ

    يُرضيه إن صعَّد أو صَوَّبا

    Rather it waded through a garden amidst its betrayal,

    Pleasing it whether ascending or descending.

  40. قد قلتُ قولاً فيكُمُ مُعْجِباً

    أن لم أكنْ ذا حُمُقٍ مُعجَبا

    I have spoken words praising you in wonder,

    Had I no foolish wonderment.

  41. قَلَّلْتُهُ فيكم وهذَّبتُهُ

    عمداً وما قلَّلَ من هذّبا

    I diminished it towards you intentionally,

    And refined it - not all who refine, diminish!

  42. ومثلُكُمْ خُصَّ بأمثالِهِ

    ومثلُكُمْ عن مثلِهِ ثَوَّبا

    And the like of you is specially entitled,

    To the like of it, and the like of you rewards it.

  43. وَلي لديكم صاحبٌ فاضلٌ

    أُحِبُّ أن يُرعى وأن يُصحبا

    I have a virtuous companion with you,

    I love that he be cared for and accompanied.

  44. مبارَكُ الطائرِ ميمونُهُ

    حدَّثني عن ذاك من جرّبا

    Blessed is the bird of good omen for him,

    Tell me of him, you who have experienced.

  45. بل عندكم من يُمنهِ شاهدٌ

    قد أفصحَ القولَ وقد أعربا

    Rather, you have with you one who witnesses him

    Who has eloquently spoken and expressed.

  46. جاء فجاءت معه غُرَّةٌ

    يُقَبِّلُ الناسُ بها كوكبا

    He came and with him came a thrill,

    People kiss him like a planet.

  47. يا حبذا بُشرى ابنُ عمَّارِكُمْ

    ما أحسن العُقبى التي أعقبا

    How excellent the tidings, Ibn 'Ammār's son,

    What fine consequence has eventuated!

  48. كان بشيراً بفتىً منكُمُ

    بل بربيعٍ منكُم أَخْصبا

    He was a herald of a youth amongst you,

    Rather, of a springtime amongst you most fertile.

  49. وما أرى اللّه امرَأً وجهَهُ

    إلا أراهُ ولداً طيّبا

    I do not see that God has faced a man,

    Except I see he is a good son.

  50. قلت لحُسَّاد له أَلهِبوا

    أو أطفئِوا جمرَكُم الملهبا

    I said to those envious of him "Inflame

    or extinguish your embers that combust!"

  51. إن أبا العباسِ مستصحِبٌ

    يَرضى أبا العباس مُستصحَبا

    Abu al-'Abbas befriends and accompanies

    Abu al-'Abbas being befriended and accompanied.

  52. لكنّ في الشيخ عُزَيريةً

    قد تركَتْهُ شَرساً مشغبا

    However the Shaykh has fickleness,

    Leaving him wild and unruly.

  53. فاشددْ أبا العباس كفّاً بهِ

    فقد ثَقفتَ المخْطَبَ المِخرَبا

    So make Abu al-'Abbas's hand firm with him

    For you have grabbed the wanton corruptor!

  54. كلِّم به مُلِّيتَهُ مِقْولاً

    وازحَمْ به مُلّئته مَنْكِبا

    Chastise him, you have filled his ear with talk,

    And push him, you have filled his shoulder.

  55. حاول به أمراً وقلِّب به

    أمراً تجده حُوَّلاً قُلَّبا

    Try with him some matter, and overturn with him

    Some matter, you will find overturned and overturned!

  56. باقِعَةً إن أنت خاطبتَهُ

    أَعرَبَ أو فاكهتَهُ أغربا

    Articulate, if you address him,

    He expresses clearly or makes subtle.

  57. يصلح للجدِّ وما هزْلُهُ

    بدون ما يُحظى وما يُجتبى

    He is apt for seriousness, not jest,

    Without what is regarded or chosen.

  58. أدَّبَهُ الدهْرُ بتصريفهِ

    فأحسنَ التأديبَ إذ أدَّبا

    Time has disciplined him through its turns,

    It has excellently disciplined when it disciplined!

  59. وظرفُهُ نُورٌ لآدابِهِ

    إذ لم ينوِّرْ كلُّ مَنْ أعشبا

    His manners are light for his morals,

    When not all who shed light, shone light.

  60. تُقصِّرُ الدهرَ أحاديثُهُ

    وتُعجِبُ الأمردَ والأشيبا

    His conversations shorten the ages

    And please the immortal and the aged.

  61. وقد غدا يشكُرُ نُعماكُمُ

    في كلِّ وادٍ موجِزاً مطنبا

    He has come to thank you for your bounty,

    In every valley, brief but florid.

  62. ولم يحاولْ مستزادي له

    ولم يجِد في فعلكم مَعتبا

    No beseecher of him has tried,

    To find fault in your deeds.

  63. لكن بدأتُ القولَ مستوهباً

    فيه لحسنِ الرأي مُستَجلِبا

    But I began words seeking grace for him,

    For the merit of opinion, drawing favour.

  64. صُونوهُ لي وارعَوهُ لي واملَؤوا

    يديه لي لا بل بما استوجَبا

    Guard him for me, beware for him, and fill

    My hands with him - no, with what he deserves!

  65. ذاك نصيبي من عطاياكُمُ

    إن حكَم الحقُّ بأن أُنصَبا

    That is my share of your gifts,

    If the truth judges that I be appointed.

  66. دع ذا وجاوزْهُ إلى غيرِهِ

    يا أكرمَ السادةِ مُستعتَبا

    Leave this and pass over it for another,

    O most generous of lords, sought for redress!

  67. كم موعدٍ منك وكم موعد

    أَكدى ولستَ البارقَ الخُلَّبَا

    How many a tryst from you, and how many

    A tryst that pained me, you unfailing lightning!

  68. أأمستِ الحيتانُ في ذمّةٍ

    أم أصبحتْ من يَمِّها هُرَّبا

    In the morning are the fish beholden?

    Or by evening are they confused?

  69. حظي من الأسبوع لا تَنْسَهُ

    ولا يكونَنْ سهميَ الأخيبا

    My share of the week - do not forget it!

    Let not my arrow be the most unlucky.

  70. لا يُخطئنِّي منك لَوزينَجٌ

    إذا بدا أعجبَ أو عجّبا

    Your sweetmeat will not miss me

    If it appears most wondrous or wondrous.

  71. لم تُغلِق الشهوةُ أبوابَها

    إلا أبتْ زُلفاهُ أن يُحجَبا

    Desire has not shut its doors

    Unless its threshold refused to be veiled.

  72. لو شاء أن يذهب في صخرةٍ

    لسهَّل الطِّيبُ لَهُ مذهبا

    If it wished to vanish into a rock

    Fragrance would smooth its passage.

  73. يدور بالنفخةِ في جامِهِ

    دَوْراً ترى الدُّهنَ له لولبا

    It spins in its cup with a breath

    A spin you see oils swirling in circles.

  74. عاونَ فيه منظرٌ مخبراً

    مستحسَنٌ ساعَد مُستعذبا

    A spectacle assisted relating,

    Commending, aiding, sweetening.

  75. كالحَسَن المُحسِنِ في شَدوهِ

    تمَّ فأضحى مَطرباً مَضرَبا

    Like the beauty of the beautiful in his ardour,

    It was completed, so he became enraptured and struck.

  76. مُستكثَفُ الحشوِ ولكنهُ

    أرقُّ قشْراً من نسيم الصِّبا

    Dense in its filling, but it

    Is finer than the breeze of the zephyr.

  77. كأنما قُدَّتْ جلابيبُه

    من أعينِ القطرِ الذي قُبّبا

    As if its robes were tailored

    From the eyes of drops that pearl.

  78. يُخالُ من رِقّةِ خرشائِه

    شاركَ في الأجنحة الجُنْدُبا

    It shares in the wings of the hoopoe

    In the softness of its roughness.

  79. لو أنه صُوِّرَ من خُبزِهِ

    ثغرٌ لكان الواضحَ الأشنبا

    Had it been depicted from its bread

    A mouth, it would be the obvious lipped.

  80. من كل بيضاءَ يُحبُّ الفتى

    أن يجعلَ الكفَّ لها مركبا

    The lad loves to make his palm

    A vessel for every white beauty.

  81. مدهونةٍ زرقاءَ مدفونةٍ

    شهباءَ تحكي الأزرق الأشهبا

    An azure tattooed and buried,

    A starry whiteness telling of the greyish white.

  82. مَلَذُّ عينٍ وفمٍ حُسِّنتْ

    وطُيِّبت حتى صبا من صبا

    Delight of an eye and mouth, adorned

    And sweetened until it flowed from youth.

  83. ذِيقَ لها اللوزُ فلا مُرَّةٌ

    مرتْ على الذائق إلا أبى

    Almonds were tasted by it, no bitterness

    Bittered the taster, it always refused.

  84. وانتقدَ السُّكَّرَ نُقَّادُهُ

    وشاوروا في نقده المُذهبا

    And its critics appraised the sugar,

    Debating its appraisal perplexed.

  85. فلا إذا العينُ رأتها نَبَتْ

    ولا إذا الضِّرس علاها نبا

    Not when the eye saw it, sprouting,

    Nor when the molar bit it, sprouting.

  86. لاتنكروا الإدلالَ من وامقٍ

    وجَّهَ تلقاءكُمُ المطلبا

    Do not deny the pampering of one providing

    And directing towards you the request.

  87. إنِّي تسحّبتُ على طَوْلكم

    بَدءاً فما استخشَنْتُه مَسحبا

    I have lingered upon your length

    First, and did not find lingering burdensome.

  88. فليُنصفِ الوُدَّ فتىً ماجدٌ

    أضحى التقاضي معه متعبا

    So let the affection of a gallant youth judge fairly,

    Arbitration with him has become tiresome.

  89. كأنه لم يدرِ أنَّ العلا

    تُزْري على العُرف إذا أنصبا

    As if he did not know that the sublime

    Cast light upon propriety when erected.

  90. يا رُبَّ معروفٍ له قيمةٌ

    كُدِّرَ صافيهِ بأنْ يُطلبا

    O Lord of a favor it has value,

    Its purity was marred by requesting it!

  91. تَبَرُّعُ التحفةِ زَيْنٌ لها

    وعيبُها الفاحشُ أن تُخْطبا

    Volunteering a gift adorns it,

    Its glaring flaw is that it be sought.

  92. وعزةُ المعروف في ذُلِّه

    وذلّةُ العُرف إذا استصْعِبا

    Honor of a favour is in its humility,

    And disgrace of propriety if made difficult.
